Last season, Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United was the only top-flight fixture scheduled for December 26 as the Premier League reiterated its commitment to giving players ample time to recover in between games over the busy winter period. This year, the Premier League has given every club at least a 60-hour break between fixtures over the Christmas and New Year period. In their message to fans on Thursday, the Premier League said: ‘This fixture announcement gives supporters more than three months’ notice to plan and make travel arrangements for a particularly busy time of the year and follows consultation with the Football Supporters’ Association and representatives from club Fan Advisory Boards.
