While FC Barcelona remains his only option, a reported broken promise has led to Julian Alvarez's frustration towards Atletico Madrid grow. Julian Alvarez remains locked in a stalemate with Atletico Madrid, as the Spanish club continues to resist any potential departure for the Argentine superstar. With FC Barcelona standing as his preferred destination, a broken promise from the club’s front office has reportedly fueled growing frustration for the forward. Since making a public statement during the World Cup expressing his desire to leave Atletico Madrid, zero progress has been made toward a transfer, as the club maintains a firm stance that he remains part of its 2026-27 plans. Now, with the mandatory reporting date arriving, Alvarez has returned to Madrid with no deal in sight. On Monday, August 10, Alvarez reported to the High Performance Sports Medicine Center in Madrid to undergo routine medical testing ahead of the new campaign. He arrived alongside Spanish World Cup champions Marcos Llorente and Alex Baena following their extended summer breaks. With the squad returning from its preseason tour in Seoul, South Korea, players will receive two days of rest before training resumes on Wednesday, when Alvarez is expected to rejoin his teammates on the pitch. Heading into Friday’s final exhibition match against Marseille, the Argentine was treated as a full participant in Diego Simeone’s squad. In the coming days, they will follow a specific work plan before joining the group. pic.twitter.com/7Dcxj5Xoa2— Atlético de Madrid (@atletienglish) August 10, 2026 Alvarez frustrated by canceled meeting with Atletico executives Atletico executives have reiterated that Alvarez remains an integral part of the team and will not be sold unless a club triggers his €500 million (roughly $578 million USD) release clause. With the striker holding a completely opposing view, a sit-down between both sides was expected upon his return. According to Barcelona insider Gerard Romero of Jijantes FC, Alvarez and the board previously agreed during a phone call to meet on August 10 to discuss his future. However, the meeting never materialized, leaving the former Manchester City forward deeply frustrated by the club’s failure to honor its word. Following his medical exams in Madrid, Romero reported that Alvarez met with his agency team, Fernando Hidalgo and Sergio Diaz. The session lasted over two hours as they mapped out their strategy for the coming days, with one clear goal in mind. Romero, Argentina insider Gaston Edul, and Spanish outlets including Diario Sport and Mundo Deportivo all align on the same conclusion: Julian Alvarez wants an immediate move to FC Barcelona during the 2026 summer transfer window. The next step will be forcing a direct meeting with Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin so the striker can directly express his position. To this point, Alvarez has not indicated any intent to stage a holdout or breach his contractual duties. For now, the Argentine star is pursuing a diplomatic resolution to secure his exit, but with time running out in the transfer window, Atletico’s unyielding stance, and Barcelona’s urgent need for a marquee striker, the coming week will prove decisive for his future.
