Inter Miami were eliminated from the 2026 Leagues Cup, but Lionel Messi still has a chance to win three titles with the Herons. Inter Miami’s early exit from the Leagues Cup was a disappointing chapter, but it’s far from the end of the road for a club still chasing serious silverware this season. Lionel Messi and company began 2026 competing for five different trophies, and even with two of those already gone, three remain firmly within reach. The three still in play are the Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record across MLS; the MLS Cup, the league’s postseason championship; and the Campeones Cup, a one-off match against Liga MX’s top club. Miami currently sits second in the Eastern Conference, keeping their Supporters’ Shield hopes alive, while the MLS Cup remains the clearest path to reclaiming the trophy they won a year ago. The Campeones Cup, meanwhile, is already locked in. As the defending MLS Cup champions, Inter Miami automatically qualify for the matchup regardless of how the rest of their season plays out, and they’re set to host Cruz Azul on September 16 in Miami for a shot at continental bragging rights. (Getty Images) The Leagues Cup blow marks the second cup competition Miami have exited early this year, following their Concacaf Champions Cup elimination back in March at the hands of Nashville on away goals. Messi’s trophy haul with Inter Miami so far Since arriving in Miami, Messi has already added three trophies to his collection with the club. It started with the 2023 Leagues Cup, his first piece of silverware in MLS, followed by the 2024 Supporters’ Shield as Inter Miami claimed the league’s best regular-season record. Last year brought the biggest prize yet: the 2025 MLS Cup, a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in which Messi didn’t score but set up both of Miami’s second-half goals. That MLS Cup triumph was a landmark moment beyond the club itself — it stood as Messi’s world-record 47th trophy across club and country, extending his stake as the most decorated player in the history of the sport. With three more titles still up for grabs this season, Messi has a real chance to add to that number before 2026 is through.
