New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso (Picture: Getty) Chelsea are in talks to sell Nicolas Jackson after Xabi Alonso placed the striker in a group of players who are training away from the first-team squad ahead of the new season. The Blues have more than 40 first-team players listed on their club website, meaning Alonso has been forced to split his squad as he prepares for Chelsea’s Premier League opener. Chelsea have insisted the group on the periphery should not be considered a ‘bomb squad’ but they certainly do not feature in Alonso’s long-team plans at Chelsea. Fellow striker Liam Delap and returning winger Mykhailo Mudryk are also in a second training group at Cobham. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Chelsea signed Jackson in a £32m deal from Villarreal in 2023 and were encouraged by his first season at Stamford Bridge in which he scored 17 goals in all competitions. Jackson also hit double digits during the 2024-25 campaign but was then loaned out to Bayern Munich following the arrivals of Joao Pedro from Brighton and Delap from Ipswich Town. The Senegal international was hoping to earn a permanent move to Bayern but the necessary conditions were not met and the Bundesliga champions opted against making a new deal with Chelsea. Chelsea are open to offers for Nicolas Jackson (Picture: Getty) As a result Jackson returned to west London but Chelsea bosses immediately made it clear that they were open to offloading him once again. Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Tottenham have made approaches for the 25-year-old but Chelsea are currently discussing a deal with Napoli, according to Sky Italia. Napoli are keen to strengthen Massimiliano Allegri’s attacking options ahead of the new season and also admire Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee. But their focus for the time being appears to be on Jackson, with reports in Italy claiming talks have began over a deal for the Chelsea man. Liam Delap is also training away from the Chelsea first-team (Picture: Getty) Villa have expressed interest in Jackson amid speculation England striker Ollie Watkins could leave the Midlands club for a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. With Chelsea open to selling Jackson for a fee of around £65m, Manchester United have even been advised to consider a move late in the summer window. ‘Nicolas Jackson is an option for Manchester United,’ Premier League title winner Quinton Fortune said earlier this month. ‘He’s coming off his loan at Bayern Munich and keeps getting clubs so he must have something. If you look at the purest of the pure footballers, he’s not a striker to bring it down and play it like Dimitar Berbatov or Wayne Rooney or Dwight Yorke but that’s what I like about him too. ‘He’s just an out-an-out striker. He doesn’t really care about anything else apart from getting into the box and getting on the end of whatever service he’s provided, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s still the hardest part of the game. ‘He’s almost like Erling Haaland at times and he shouldn’t get involved in the play so much. Tell the other guys they can do all the hard work and I’ll score the goals. ‘Whether he’s right for United, I don’t know about that, but you don’t play for Chelsea and Bayern Munich if you haven’t got something about you.’ Chelsea kick-start their 2026-27 campaign with a trip to west London rivals Fulham on Monday night. ‘We feel ready,’ Alonso said at his first Chelsea pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon. ‘We have prepared the whole pre-season with some players from the first day, other ones coming later. ‘But the de

Chelsea striker Liam Delap has lost the number nine shirt at the club and is one of several players now training separately to the main squad. A number of players who could move before the transfer window closes on 1 September - including fellow forward Nicolas Jackson and winger Mykhailo Mudryk - are in a second training group at Cobham. Chelsea are seeking £50 million for Delap and trying to reduce the size of their squad before the end of the summer transfer window, with 40 senior players on their books.
Liam Delap’s Chelsea future has taken another significant turn, with the striker losing the number nine shirt and moving into a separate training group ahead of the new Premier League season. João Pedro has inherited the prestigious number, while Delap is now training alongside several players whose futures remain uncertain, including Nicolas Jackson and Mykhailo […] The post Chelsea player loses shirt number and trains away from the first team appeared first on CaughtOffside.
Nottingham Forest have entered the race for Chelsea striker Liam Delap, adding another potential destination for the 23-year-old as his Stamford Bridge future becomes increasingly uncertain. Delap is expected to be allowed to leave Chelsea following a difficult first season in west London, when injuries and inconsistent form limited his impact. Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Manchester United should have signed Joao Pedro, according to Michael Owen (Picture: Getty) Michael Owen says he is a ‘huge fan’ of Joao Pedro and Manchester United should have looked to sign the ‘unbelievable’ forward before he joined Chelsea. Pedro left Brighton to complete a £60million move to Chelsea 12 months ago and the 24-year-old went on to enjoy an impressive debut season in an otherwise wretched campaign for the club. The versatile attacker quickly established himself as the Blues’ first-choice centre-forward ahead of fellow summer signing Liam Delap and finished with 20 goals to his name in all competitions. No doubt still hurting after missing out on Brazil’s World Cup squad, he will be looking to get off on the right foot under new manager Xabi Alonso this coming season, starting against local rivals Fulham in a week’s time. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. After finishing down in tenth last term, Chelsea have no European football to contend with this time around – giving Alonso the luxury of being able to focus purely on domestic football over the coming weeks and months. According to Owen, this could prove massively beneficial for Alonso’s men, who he is backing to finish second in the top flight behind reigning champions Arsenal. Asked to name his favourites to challenge Arsenal, Owen told The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast sponsored by Midnite: ‘Chelsea. This could be way off the mark but they’ve got no Europe at all and you see how important that has been over the years. It was brilliant for Manchester United last year. Owen has high hopes for Chelsea under new manager Alonso (Picture: The Good, The Bad & The Football) Pedro scored 20 goals for Chelsea last season (Picture: Getty) ‘This manager [Xabi Alonso] did something similar with an unfancied team in Germany [Bayer Leverkusen], he’s going to change a lot, they’ve bought well.’ Owen has high hopes for Chelsea’s all-star attack this season and believes Manchester United missed a trick not trying to sign Pedro before the Blues came in for the Brazilian last year. ‘I’m a huge Joao Pedro fan, I think he’s unbelievable. In fact, Manchester United should have bought him about four years ago when he was at Watford,’ the ex-England, United and Liverpool striker explained. {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Xabi Alonso unveiled as new Chelsea manager","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/07\/13\/2914846474672192337\/480x270_MP4_2914846474672192337.mp4","description":"Xabi Alonso has been posing with his own Chelsea shirt as he holds his first press conference as the new manager at Stamford Bridge.","duration":"T30S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/07\/13\/17\/109989603-0-image-m-5_1783958963915.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-07-13T17:13:59+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); ‘United had nobody up front for years and I thought, “That Joao Pedro”, I love him. ‘Him, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer as a front three… strange signings in Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson obviously.’ While acknowledging ‘question marks’ surrounding Robert Sanchez, Owen feels Chelsea could ‘catch

Como boss and Chelsea hero Cesc Fabregas (Picture: Getty) Cesc Fabregas has expressed interest in a second Chelsea player after signing Trevor Chalobah for Como in a deal worth £30m. Chelsea put England centre-back Chalobah up for sale after signing £52m Maxence Lacroix from London rivals Crystal Palace. Chalobah made 151 appearances for boyhood club Chelsea, including 47 last season, and emerged as a key target for Como boss Fabregas. Fabregas briefly played alongside Chalobah at Stamford Bridge and welcomed the 27-year-old to Serie A side Como on a five-year deal. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. Chalobah won five trophies during his 20-year spell at Chelsea, including the FA Cup in 2018 and the Europa Conference League in 2025. Chelsea failed to qualify for any European competition last season but Fabregas’ Como are preparing for a Champions League campaign after finishing fourth in Serie A. Discussing Chalobah’s move to Como, Fabregas said: ‘Trevoh is an important signing for us and a player who represents the level of ambition we have at this club. Trevoh Chalobah left Chelsea to join Como (Picture: Getty) ‘He is a leader who can raise the level of the team, and I am very happy that he has chosen Como.’ Fabregas has a good relationship with Chelsea bosses, having spent five years at Stamford Bridge as a player, winning two Premier League titles, the Europa League and two domestic cups. The Spanish football icon is hoping to use his connections at Chelsea to secure another summer signing and bring Liam Delap to Como. Liam Delap has been put up for sale by Chelsea (Picture: Getty) According to talkSPORT, Fabregas has sanctioned a move for Delap, who has been put up for sale by Chelsea after a poor first season in west London. Chelsea’s £30m signing of Delap was seen as a real coup but the 23-year-old only scored one Premier League goal for the Blues. Despite his struggles and the fact he was back-up to Chelsea No. 9 Joao Pedro, Chelsea hope to receive at least £40m for Delap amid long-term interest from Everton and Newcastle United. Xabi Alonso has sanctioned Delap’s exit (Picture: Reuters) Nottingham Forest have also reportedly joined the battle to sign Delap, who is believed to be hoping to stay in England if he is forced out of Chelsea. Chelsea bolstered Xabi Alonso’s attacking options over the summer with the signing of ex-England striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. Nicolas Jackson has also returned from his season-long loan at Bayern Munich but could be offloaded as well as Delap, with Aston Villa admirers. Delap struggled at Chelsea last season (Picture: Getty) In an exclusive interview with Metro at the start of the summer, Danny Murphy advised Alonso to block Delap from leaving Chelsea. ‘I think any manager coming in has to give players a chance so I think he’ll want to look at them and see what they’ve got,’ Murphy said on behalf of NetBet football. ‘The other thing is that there might not be other clubs who want to take them with the wages they are on or pay the fee for them. ‘That is just the dynamic of football politics and transfers, you can easily say “they haven’t done very well let’s move them on”, but where to, and for how much? ‘Liam Delap is a young lad, and he brings some characteristics that Chelsea don’t have. He’s different to Joao Pedro so I think Xabi Alonso will give him a crack.’ Chelsea face west London rivals Fulham in their Premier League opener next Monday night. The Blues finished just 10th last season but have been tipped as dark horses for the title under former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Alonso. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
