Manchester United boss Michael Carrick (Picture: Getty) Jaap Stam has urged Michael Carrick to get Joshua Zirkzee back in the Manchester United team after a summer move away from Old Trafford fell through. The Red Devils were open to offloading Zirkzee in the summer transfer window amid interest from multiple Italian clubs. Juventus and Napoli both expressed interest in the Netherlands international but favoured a loan deal whereas Manchester United wanted a standard sale. Zirzkee also attracted interest from Everton on transfer deadline day but at that point United had ruled out a deal given they were unable to sign a replacement. Manchester United had high hopes for Zirkzee following his £36.5m move from Bologna in 2024 but the 25-year-old has scored just five goals across the last two Premier League campaigns. Carrick appears to have reservations about Zirkzee and is yet to give the Dutchman any minutes from the bench this season. But Old Trafford legend Stam is confident his compatriot Zirkzee can ‘still do well’ for Manchester United and says he was one of the reasons Carrick ‘didn’t need to sign a striker this summer’. Bryan Mbeumo sometimes plays on the right, sometimes he plays down the middle, so I would have brought in a winger with a lot of pace that can create something. ‘Defensively, the players in that area have played together for years and years, so I think they needed to add something new and I would have done that straight away if the opportunity was there.’ Liverpool summer signing Bradley Barcola (Picture: Getty) Stam’s winger of choice for Manchester United would have been Bradley Barcola, who completed a stunning £123m move from PSG to Liverpool. Barcola helped the Ligue 1 giants win back-to-back Champions Leagues and was part of France’s star-studded World Cup squad over the summer. ‘Liverpool got Bradley Barcola from PSG and like I’ve said previously, I would have liked Man United to have signed a winger during the summer transfer window,’ Stam added. ‘He’s the type of player we could have done with because he’s got tremendous pace and he’s unpredictable in the way he plays. ‘But Manchester United have their own thoughts on how they want to approach the transfer window, so who am I to say who they should have signed and who they shouldn’t.’ Carrick’s United mark their return to the Champions League on Thursday night against Azerbaijani minnows Shabah. Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs (Picture: YouTube) Ryan Giggs has revealed Pep Guardiola expressed his huge admiration for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in front of Sir Alex Ferguson. Giggs recalled a dinner he attended with then-Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Old Trafford legend Ferguson ‘about eight or nine years ago’. At one point during the night out, Giggs asked Guardiola which Manchester United players he most admired, believing David de Gea would be his go-to answer. De Gea was one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the time, winning United’s Player of the Year award four times in the space of five seasons. But Guardiola instead singled out Rashford for praise, insisting he would ‘take him at Man City tomorrow’. Rashford reached double figures in each of his first five full seasons after breaking into the first team at Old Trafford, scoring 22 goals in 2019-20 and 21 the year after. Rashford’s numbers have tailed off since then and his United future looked in huge threat after he was banished by Ruben Amorim and loaned out to Barcelona. The 28-year-old was keen to stay at the Nou Camp on a permanent transfer but Barca opted to send him back to Manchester United. Former Man City boss Pep Guardiola (Picture: Getty) Recalling his surreal night out with legendary managers Guardiola and Ferguson, Giggs said on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel: ‘There’s about eight of us, so he [Ferguson] sat me next to Pep, this was about, I’m going to say about eight or nine years ago. ‘I’ve gone to Pep and said, “you know, who do you like at Manchester United?”, and he went, “well, who do you think?” ‘So I went, David De Gea? He went, no. Luke Shaw? I was just like, no. He said the best player at Man United, Marcus Rashford. He said he would take him tomorrow. And that was obviously when Marcus was playing as a centre forward.’ Giggs, one of the best players of his generation and an all-time legend at Manchester United, also revealed how he tried to persuade Elliot Anderson to join the club over the summer. He didn’t know how to take it at first, and then he relaxed a little bit. ‘But for the first four or five holes, we were literally crossing. And at the end of it, he went, “will you just leave me alone… will you just let me play my golf, please? You’re in trouble!”‘ Ferdinand then revealed he has also tried to convince Manchester United transfer targets to make the move. ‘That’s what I do when I see some players,’ the former centre-back said. ‘I don’t care, you’ve got to try all sorts to get these deals over. ‘It’s mad, though. Obviously, the price tag was crazy. And it’s just like astronomical money. And Man United ain’t got the budget to pay for that.’ Giggs is one of the most decorated footballers of all time, having won 13 Premier League titles, eight domestic cups and two Champions Leagues during his 24-year spell at Manchester United. Manchester United should have explored a transfer move for Unai Simon, says Rene Meulensteen (Picture: No Tippy Tappy Football) Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen says the club should have made a move for Athletic Bilbao and Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils replaced the error-prone Andre Onana by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth in the region of £18million last summer. The 24-year-old would go on to enjoy a promising debut season at Old Trafford, winning United fans over with a series of impressive performances across his opening 33 appearances. However, it has proven a tricky start to the new campaign for Lammens, with Michael Carrick’s side picking up just four points from their first three matches in the Premier League and conceding six goals in the process. At the weekend, Lammens was met with criticism after Tyrique George beat the Belgian at his near post as Everton cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Lammens could do nothing about the Toffees’ second equaliser, though, with substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles curling home a superb strike from 25 yards to make it 2-2 at the death. ‘Don’t get me wrong, he had a really good season, he made some remarkable saves and he helped United a lot,’ Meulensteen said of Lammens on the latest edition of the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, in partnership with BOYLE Sports. No. Can he get there? Not sure. ‘I doubt it because I always do my due diligence on things and one of the things I felt with him, he’s still young, but obviously what happened with him at the World Cup is something I identified in him. ‘I think really critical people will probably look at him with the first goal against Everton, near post. ‘For me, if you talk about strengthening, you talk about the two most important people on the pitch: the goalkeeper and the striker. While Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures are a traditional part of the competition, games taking place on a Thursday are a less familiar sight for Champions League audiences. This is because UEFA has decided that the first week of the Champions League should be exclusive to the competition, with no fixtures from the Europa League and Conference League taking place. The Europa League’s exclusive week, meanwhile, will take place on Wednesday, September 16 and Thursday, September 17. After the exclusive first week, the Champions League will revert back to its usual schedule with games staged across Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The opening round of fixtures consists of six games starting at 5.45pm, and the early matches will continue to be a part of the Champions League schedule throughout the season. The early kick-off time was introduced by UEFA for its club competitions in 2021 in an attempt to boost international viewing figures for matches. The move hasn’t been universally popular, however, with one common complaint being that fans commuting home from work often miss the start of the match on TV. The early start also leaves little time for match-going supporters to reach the stadium on time after work – and not to mention the fact they are often travelling during peak public transport times.
