Head coach Derek McInnes insists Lawrence Shankland understands the expectations of Rangers after being named captain. The 30-year-old striker succeeds departed right-back James Tavernier, who McInnes felt was treated "unfairly" during parts of his captaincy. With that in mind, McInnes has urged the entire Rangers team to "share the load" of responsibility.
Derek McInnes has been speaking to the media as he prepares for his first competitive game as Rangers head coach away to Dundee United on Friday night. After naming striker Lawrence Shankland as captain, McInnes says he "has evidence of how well he runs a dressing room [at Hearts]" and stresses "he knows the club, he knows what's expected and we have a strong relationship as well". The Rangers boss admits he needs more than just Shankland to lead: "We need as many captains underneath him to share the burden."
Cammy Devlin remained humble when it was suggested his introduction as a half-time substitute helped change the game in Rangers' favour as he made his first appearance for Derek McInnes' side in Wednesday's 2-1 pre-season friendly win over St Etienne. "It does help," Devlin told Rangers TV. Rangers took the lead from a penalty by former Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, Ian Cathro's Ligue 2 side equalised through previously Celtic-linked midfielder Jakob Breum before Thelo Aasgaard secured the win with another spot kick.
Ryan Naderi says Derek McInnes' experience as a former Rangers player will be beneficial to the current squad in understanding the demands at the club. McInnes played at Ibrox between 1995 and 2000, and after several years of being linked with a return as manager, finally left Hearts to take over from Danny Rohl last month. Naderi said he welcomes the increased competition for starting striker berths following the arrival of Lawrence Shankland from Hearts, but stressed he is "not here to sit on the bench".
It has been 67 days since Hearts last played a competitive match, and it is unlikely they will be involved in anything quite as dramatic as that afternoon at Celtic Park. There has also been significant turnover in personnel since May. High-profile departures have seen Cammy Devlin and Lawrence Shankland make the move to Rangers, following last season's head coach, McInnes. As a result, a new cast has been assembled at Tynecastle over the past few weeks, tasked with building on a campaign that few associated with the club will ever forget.
