TOM COLLOMOSSE: Without a win or even a goal at the City Ground this season, Nottingham Forest are still to splutter into life under their new boss Oliver Glasner.

Oliver Glasner argued there was insufficient evidence to disallow Neco Williams’s goal against Tottenham, accusing the video assistant referee Peter Bankes of guessing that the Nottingham Forest defender handled and said ruling it out weakens the officials’ authority. Midway through the second half, Williams stooped to head in on the goalline as Sandro Tonali attempted to hook the ball clear after Morgan Gibbs-White’s deflected effort bobbled towards the net.Glasner conceded at least one angle showed Williams appeared to handle the ball, seemingly to protect himself as Tonali went to clear the ball with his left boot, but said the footage was too unclear to disallow the goal. “I don’t think VAR can intervene when he’s guessing,” said Forest’s head coach. “It was not clear and obvious. We had a briefing before the season that the threshold for VAR intervention should be very high and this is why it was a wrong intervention for me. Continue reading...

Chelsea almost signed a new midfielder on deadline day (Picture: Getty) Xabi Alonso gave Chelsea his backing over a shock £65m bid to sign England midfielder James Garner on transfer deadline day, according to reports. Chelsea were working on deals for a number of midfielders on deadline day as Enzo Fernandez closed in on a move to Manchester City. The Blues held talks with Roma for France World Cup star Manu Kone and thought they had agreed a deal with Monaco for Lamine Camara. Progress in the Camara pursuit led Chelsea to sanction Fernandez’s move to the Etihad Stadium for a staggering £125m – the joint-highest fee paid in Premier League history. But talks with Monaco then broke down meaning Camara stayed put and Alonso failed to sign a replacement for Fernandez. As well as looking at Camara and Kone, Chelsea were also linked with deadline-day moves for Alex Scott, Martin Zubimendi and Morgan Gibbs-White. According to talkSPORT, Chelsea also made a late bid for Garner but were knocked back by Premier League rivals Everton. Everton and England midfielder James Garner (Picture: Getty) Garner, a product of the Manchester United academy, has made over 100 appearances for Everton since leaving Old Trafford in 2022. The 25-year-old was handed his England debut by Thomas Tuchel earlier this season but failed to make the Three Lions’ World Cup squad. It is claimed Alonso approved Chelsea’s move for Garner, who can play at right-back as well as in midfield, but Everton were unwilling to entertain any offers so close to the transfer deadline. New Manchester City signing Enzo Fernandez (Picture: Getty) The report adds that Chelsea indicated they were willing to pay £65m for Garner but Everton told them he was not for sale on the final day of the window. Argentina World Cup winner Fernandez was keen to join Real Madrid earlier in the summer but also approved a move to Manchester City once a switch to the Bernabeu failed to materialise. ‘Man City are the most successful club in England in recent times,’ Fernandes said. ‘Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are. ‘I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success. ‘If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player. I pride myself on continually improving my game. ‘Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.’ Fernandez could make his Manchester City debut on Saturday when newly-promoted Coventry City visit the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea have set their sights on Roma and France midfielder Manu Kone (Picture: Getty) Chelsea are closing in on a deal with Roma to sign France midfielder Manu Kone, according to reports in Italy. Kone has emerged as Chelsea’s top target to replace Enzo Fernandez in the final few hours of the transfer window. Fernandez has been pushing to join former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at Manchester City this summer and talks are ongoing between the two Premier League clubs regarding an agreement for the 2022 World Cup winner. The Argentina international was left out of Xabi Alonso’s squad for Chelsea last two matches against Luton Town and Brighton in the Carabao Cup and Premier League respectively and has no intention of playing for the Blues this season. Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White have also being linked as possible additions at Stamford Bridge in the event that City meet Chelsea’s £120million asking price for Fernandez. Earlier this week, reports emanating out of Kone’s France indicated Roma had no intention of parting ways with the sought-after 25-year-old, rumours which Gian Piero Gasperini appeared to confirm. ‘Absolutely not, it is a media thing. I know nothing about it. I also know the owners do not want to sell,’ the Roma manager told reporters. Kone is considered one of the finest central midfielders in Serie A (Picture: Getty) Gasperini has been desperate to keep hold of Kone this summer (Picture: Getty) ‘I don’t know who approached us, but we have not received any formal offers for him.’ However, Sky Italy are now reporting that Chelsea and Roma are edging ever closer to an agreement worth in the region of £52million for the France international. It’s claimed the two clubs are also discussing a possible deal that would see Jamie Gittens move from west London to Rome on a season-long loan deal. According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have also made an official bid for Monaco central midfielder Camara worth €45m (£38.5m), but this figure is believed to be lower than the asking price set by the Ligue 1 outfit. {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Alonso speaks after whirlwind 4-3 win over Brighton","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/08\/31\/8888547213964063520\/480x270_MP4_8888547213964063520.mp4","description":"The goals conceded and possession stats don't seem to irk the Chelsea boss as long as they're winning games.","duration":"T6M3S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/08\/31\/07\/110948211-0-image-a-9_1788159003578.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-08-31T07:50:09+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); Kone has racked up four goals and six assists in 84 appearances for Roma since arriving in the Italian capital from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach – initially on a temporary basis – in 2024.
