Larry Berg, a co-owner of MLS club Los Angeles FC and the league’s incoming boss, said in his introductory press conference on Tuesday that he doesn’t think that the long-mooted idea of bringing “pro/rel” to the North American league is “appropriate”. “I can understand the appeal for the fans, [but] I don’t think it’s a great way to build a league, I don’t think it’s a way to get stadiums built, get training facilities built, and to have owners invest in rosters and all the other things you need to do,” Berg said.

The Major League Soccer board of governors has voted to install Los Angeles FC co-managing owner Larry Berg as the league’s next commissioner. Berg will succeed Don Garber as the head of the 30-year-old league, with a term starting on 1 January 2027. Garber, who has served as commissioner since 1999, has a contract with the league that runs until the end of 2027.
