Rashford hoping to start this afternoon (Picture: Every Second Media) Manchester United will be without new signing Carlos Baleba for their Premier League clash against Ipswich Town this afternoon. Michael Carrick’s side fell to a dismal 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City in their season opener last Saturday. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both started in United’s new-look midfield with Baleba arriving at Old Trafford in a £65million deal from Brighton this week to complete the rebuild. The Cameroon international is expected to be unveiled ahead of kick-off but fans will have to wait to see him in action. An ankle injury picked up during Brighton’s pre-season campaign means he is not available today with Carrick confirming on Friday it could be another two or three weeks before he is fit to play. That timeline suggests he will be in contention to face Fulham in west London on 20 September. United could also choose to hold him back until after the international break, resuming action against Tottenham on 10 October. Amad Diallo is also ruled out as a result of an ankle injury he picked up last week before the Hull game. Carrick did not put a timeline on his return to action but reports suggest he faces six weeks on the sidelines. Mainoo also pushing for a place in the starting XI (Picture: Getty) Mason Mount was back in training this week after picking up a hamstring injury in the pre-season game against Paris Saint-Germain. The former Chelsea star featured prominently in a central midfield role before that injury struck in the summer. Matthijs de Ligt is still working his way back to full fitness after his lengthy lay-off with Manuel Ugarte a long-term absentee. Man Utd XI to face Ipswich – Metro prediction Matheus Cunha was fairly ineffective through the middle against Hull with Benjamin Sesko’s presence missed. The Slovenia international didn’t play a minute of pre-season due to a shin problem but could be required to start today. Marcus Rashford made a good case for a starting role after coming off the bench at half-time against the Tigers while Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez will also be in contention. Carrick could get another option up front (Picture: Justin Setterfield/Getty Images) Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Fiorentina for Joshua Zirkzee with La Viola now leading the race for the forward. Zirkzee was an unused substitute in United’s opening game of the season against Hull City last weekend, left on the bench despite Benjamin Sesko not being deemed fit enough with Amad Diallo also missing out through injury. He is among the players United are prepared to let go this summer for the right offer after two underwhelming seasons at Old Trafford. The Dutchman has scored just five goals in the Premier League since his £36.5million arrival from Bologna in the summer of 2024, nine in total across 75 appearances. Juventus have been eager to sign the forward but with the final days of the summer transfer window approaching, Fiorentina have moved ahead with the club in advanced talks with United. Gazzetta dello Sport report Fiorentina have made an official offer to sign the player on loan for the rest of the season, a deal which includes a €5million (£4.2m) loan fee. The clubs remain in talks over whether the deal will include an option to buy at the end of the season or an obligation to buy with a fee for those clauses still being negotiated. Zirkzee poised to return to Italy (Picture: Sportimage) United completed their midfield rebuild with the signing of Carlos Baleba last week with a new left-back also being considered. But Zirkzee’s departure could prompt the club into bringing in another centre forward, with exit possibly paving the way for another addition up top. United have been linked with Ollie Watkins but the England international is now poised to complete a lucrative move to Saudi side Al-Hilal. Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta could also be an option. Zirkzee was an unused substitute against Hull last weekend (Picture: Getty) While there have been flashes of brilliance, Zirkzee’s time at United has ultimately been undermined by his poor goal return. Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has long held reservations over Zirkzee’s chances of succeeding at United, explaining in January his move to Old Trafford was a mistake when there was the option of staying in Italy. ‘For me, there was always a doubt that it was the right decision to go to Manchester United. I think he should have stayed in Serie A. He was doing well with Bologna and I think he should have gone to a better team in Italy,’ Gullit told Metro at the start of the year.
