Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp were criticised in some quarters for letting a squad get past their peak without phasing in replacements. The result was a summer in which they signed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in one fell swoop. While fortunes varied at first, Liverpool fans don't need a reminder that this trio became a league-winning midfield under a manager that has since been sacked.
When BBC Sport spoke to Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan in New York, the message was very much that FSG will continue to invest when it comes to doing what is best to put the team in a place to win. With Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, Liverpool have solid options in midfield. Szoboszlai and Gravenberch signed new contracts this year while Andoni Iraola will be hoping to get the most out of Mac Allister, who was nowhere near his best last season.
Liverpool have 32 players out in America, though a handful have only travelled as it was felt best for them to carry on their individual rehabilitation with the squad than at an empty training ground back home. With the World Cup this summer, it's understandable that some key names are still missing though Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch will link up with the squad for the second week of the training camp. Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz will be the final players to join up with the squad.
