President Donald Trump showed his support for Gianni Infantino, following the joint letter from UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF criticizing the FIFA president. Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Gianni Infantino as the FIFA president faces mounting pressure to step down, warning that removing him would be a costly mistake for the organization. The U.S. president made his position clear in a post on Truth Social, defending Infantino’s leadership amid the growing revolt from some of football’s most powerful governing bodies. In his post, Trump wrote: “FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino. He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented. If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!” The backing comes in the middle of a crisis triggered by Infantino’s now-scrapped FIFA Forward Enterprise plan, which would have sold private investors a 20% stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights for a reported $4.2 billion. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump. (Getty Images) The proposal sparked accusations that Infantino was attempting to privatize a central pillar of the sport, and although FIFA has since abandoned the plan and admitted it mishandled the rollout, the fallout has only deepened divisions within soccer governing structure. UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF jointly released a letter in response, stating that “trust” had been “broken through deception” and calling for new leadership at FIFA that serves football rather than commands it. Argentina, Mexico and Africa’s CAF rally behind embattled Infantino Not everyone within soccer governing bodies has turned against Infantino. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) issued a letter backing him directly, pointing to FIFA’s work over the past decade as having “centred on the development of soccer worldwide and institutional strength based on a clear, stable, and transparent governance model”. Mexico’s federation broke ranks with its own regional confederation, CONCACAF, to back Infantino as well, saying it “supports President Infantino’s leadership in continuing to promote the development of football through institutional strengthening”. That backing was reinforced by the African Football Confederation (CAF), which unanimously endorsed Infantino across its 54 member nations — a significant show of support led by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, long considered a close ally of the FIFA chief.

Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini strongly supports the club's endeavours to "keep hold of their key players" ahead of the 2026-27 season, after Regis le Bris highlighted the need to be "really precise" in the transfer window. Belgium international Thomas Meunier is the only player to arrive on a permanent deal so far, having joined on a free transfer from Lille. "Like most Sunderland fans, I'm checking the BBC Sport website regularly just to make sure I haven't missed anything," Gabbiadini told BBC Radio Newcastle.
Mykhailo Mudryk is back available for Chelsea (Picture: Reuters) Mykhailo Mudryk has made his transfer preference clear after Chelsea reportedly ruled out selling the winger this summer. Mudryk was unavailable to play for almost two years after he was suspended for returning an ‘adverse finding’ for the banned substance meldonium. However, the Ukrainian has now been cleared to play again after resolving his doping case with the Football Association. Mudryk subsequently joined up with Chelsea’s pre-season tour, making three brief cameo appearances off the bench against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta’zim. However, after nearly two seasons without a first-team appearance, it appears likely that the 25-year-old will go out on loan to get regular minutes and demonstrate his level after such a long lay-off. Widespread reports indicate that Chelsea are not considering a sale for Mudryk this summer, with several clubs across Europe interested in a loan for the winger. Mykhailo Mudryk has featured in pre-season (Picture: AP) But Fabrizio Romano reports that Mudryk would prefer to remain in the Premier League next season if Chelsea do reach an agreement to send him out on loan. Frank Lampard’s Coventry City have been linked with a move for Mudryk as the former Chelsea boss looks to add firepower to his squad ahead of their Premier League return. Speaking last week about Mudryk’s Chelsea future, Xabi Alonso said: ‘Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of a team, and we need to assess [how he is doing]. Mudryk is set to leave Chelsea on loan before deadline day (Picture: Getty) ‘But for sure, he’s a special player. It’s a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive.’ Meanwhile, Chelsea teammate Tosin Adarabioyo was full of praise for Mudryk’s attitude during his 20-month absence, saying of the Ukrainian: ‘Misha is a freak. His work rate is unbelievable. There is no doubt he has been working hard throughout this whole time. ‘I know he has been doing sessions away. I have seen him. I know the guys he has been working with, so it’s good. ‘Misha is my guy. I have kept in contact with him throughout and it is really nice to have him back. I am really happy for him. ‘You can see he is just really happy to be around and back in the environment. It is obviously going to take him some time, but we are all here to support him.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Today’s rumours are just trying to orbit the sunWhen did the summer of 2026 transform into a midfield merry-go-round? Now Bruno Guimarães has rocked up at Arsenal and Manchester United have a couple of new signings, it stands to reason that more midfielders will be on the move soon and Real Madrid appear to be chasing Gunners metronome Martín Zubimendi. It seems odd that Arsenal would sanction a sale, given they spent most of the 2024-25 campaign coveting the former Real Sociedad star, but Mikel Arteta has forward and defensive targets to land instead. Pedro Neto is the latest winger to be linked, though Liverpool and Tottenham are also in the queue for the Chelsea flyer. Tricky Juventus wide man Kenan Yildiz has also been mentioned in relation to Arsenal. Continue reading...

Frank Lampard’s Coventry will play in the Premier League for the first time since 2001 (Photo: Getty) A former Manchester United star is reportedly keen on returning to the Premier League amid interest from Frank Lampard’s Coventry City. After cruising to the Championship title, Coventry are preparing to play in the Premier League for the first time since in 2001, kicking-off the new season against champions Arsenal on August 21. And Lampard has splashed the case this summer transfer window, spending £86million on five players, including highly-rated English goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton. More signings will be needed to give the Sky Blues the best possible chance of avoiding relegation and, according to L’Equipe, they have made enquiries about Marseille’s Angel Gomes. The midfielder came through United’s academy but failed to break into the first-team before joining Lille, where he quietly impressed, leading to Lee Carsley giving him his England debut in 2024. Gomes only signed for Marseille last summer before spending the second-half of the season on loan at Wolves, though he was unable to stop their relegation. It is said that the 25-year-old wants another chance to prove himself in his homeland and while Marseille do not wish to sell him, they will not stand in his way if a suitable deal can be agreed. Angel Gomes joined Marseille on a free only last summer (Photo: Getty) Due to their financial situation, the French club need to sell this summer, and as one of their top earners, Gomes, who is under contract until 2028, is a top candidate to leave. Additionally, Sky Sports report that Marseille striker Neal Maupay, formerly of Brentford, Everton and Brighton, and defender Leonardo Balerdi, are also of interest to several Premier League clubs. Newcastle United were on course to sign Gomes’ current midfield partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to replace captain Brumo Guimaraes, who recently completed a £75m switch to Arsenal. Gomes made just 10 senior appearances for boyhood club Man Utd (Photo: Getty) However, it was reported on Monday that the former Tottenham star has declined the chance to return to England, in yet another transfer blow for the Magpies. In other news, rumours from Italy suggest Lampard is preparing an ambitious bid to reunite with former Chelsea and England centre-back Fikayo Tomori, whose future at AC Milan is unclear.
