In spite of a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, the new head coach at St James’ Park showed signs he is on the right path, and is closing in on Benfica’s Amar DedicReasons to be fearful or cause to be cheerful? Newcastle fans among a crowd in excess of 39,000 at St James’ Park on Saturday had much to debate as they headed home from a slightly underwhelming 2-1 friendly defeat by Bayer Leverkusen. The bad news is that a suddenly youthful team still coming to terms with life without this summer’s departed stars, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, look more than a little undercooked before Liverpool’s visit on Premier League duty next Sunday. Wembley curtain-raiser can offer clues but it is no reliable pointer to a season – its winners have not landed the title since 2018The doubt for anyone when a long-strived-for goal has been achieved is hunger. Arsenal waited 22 years for their 14th league title and, compounding the yearning, finished second three times in a row before finally lifting the Premier League trophy in May. The physical exertions of last season were immense – as seen by Declan Rice’s clear exhaustion and Bukayo Saka’s intermittent contributions at the World Cup, where William Saliba picked up a back injury – but so too was the emotional strain. The first weeks of a new season after a major tournament, especially the World Cup, are often a little erratic anyway, but this feels like a particularly unpredictable start to a campaign. Nine of the 20 Premier League clubs have changed manager this summer. For the first time in 40 years, none of the five big managerial beasts of the Premier League era – Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola – will be in charge of a club. There are unknowns and uncertainty everywhere, even at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta may be the longest-serving manager in the league but there are questions even there; it would be no great surprise if Arsenal were to start slowly. Continue reading...

Zion Suzuki’s move to PSG is off (Getty) Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after his transfer to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed on Saturday. PSG had agreed a €35 million (£30m) deal with Parma for Suzuki and the Japan international was due to travel to Paris on Saturday to undergo a medical and finalise his move to Luis Enrique’s side. However, RMC Sport reports that the commission demanded by Suzuki’s agents at the last minute was deemed too high by PSG’s hierarchy, who then opted to pull out of the deal. The report adds that barring any unforeseen circumstances, Suzuki will not be joining PSG this summer. Meanwhile, Sky Sport Italy claims that Suzuki had not given the green light over a move to PSG due to concerns over playing time. The report claims that Villa have retained their interest in Suzuki and could now have a clear run at signing the 23-year-old. Juventus made a new approach for Emiliano Martinez on Saturday (Getty) Juventus also made a fresh enquiry to Villa over a deal to sign Emiliano Martinez on Saturday. However, in an interview with 365 Scores last month, Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, insisted that the Argentina international would not leave the club. ‘The goalkeeper’s future is settled, he is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer,’ Vidagany said. ‘The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season. ‘All the news published by the media about his departure to Juventus does not reflect the club’s true position. ‘Martinez is a very important player for us, and we expect him to continue delivering his outstanding performances alongside his teammates.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page.
