Nottingham Forest supporter Tony O'Dowd says Coventry City can expect new signing Taiwo Awoniyi to be a "phenomenal in-form player" and an "absolute live wire". The 29-year-old striker, who became Forest's record signing when he joined from Union Berlin in June 2022, has completed a £9m move to the CBS Arena. You've got a man there that can do a job for you in the Premier League.
Yan Diomande is the most expensive signing in Real Madrid history, but his career trajectory could have been drastically different if not for the developmental guidance of coach Todd Eason at Florida's DME Academy. A lot can change in one year, just ask Yan Diomande. Today, he’s the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season and a fully capped Ivory Coast international winger. But at the start of last season, nobody knew who he even was. Well, almost nobody. Todd Eason knew that Diomande was going to be special when he first laid eyes on him in 2022. Born in Abidjan, Diomande grew up in poverty and grew accustomed to sharing a roof with 25 other people and playing soccer either barefoot or with plastic sandals. And with his father abandoning the house and moving to France when he was still a youngster, Diomande always knew that he’d be tasked with leading his family out of poverty. It’s why, at nine years old, he joined the Académie Inter Foot Sud Comoé, where he finally secured a pair of boots and started plying his trade near the Ghana-Ivory Coast border. But he still struggled with destitute conditions and once had to steal potatoes from a shop alongside 19 other kids to avoid going hungry. He always knew that, in order to get a top-class academic and soccer education, he’d need to leave Africa. Todd Eason saw Diomande’s true potential When he was 15 years old, Diomande flew to Florida and started a new chapter with DME Academy alongside Todd Eason, DME’s Director of Soccer from April 2021 to January 2024 and their Athletic Director from January 2024 to October 2024. Despite not speaking any English initially, Diomande flourished in Daytona Beach for both DME and their semi-pro affiliate AS Frenzi, leading the latter to the 2023 United Premier Soccer League. Yan Diomande, former RB Leipzig player Unfortunately, he was unable to secure a permanent contract with a number of MLS and European sides before returning to Abidjan upon the expiry of his student visa. Nevertheless, Diomande would soon earn a move to Spanish side Leganés, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist in 10 appearances before then taking his talents to German outfit RB Leipzig. It didn’t take him long to justify Leipzig’s $23 million investment, racking up 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances and leading them from a 7th-place finish in 2024/25 to 3rd in 2025/26. He didn’t just make his impact at the club level, but also at the international level, debuting for the Ivory Coast and competing in the Africa Cup of Nations. And after winning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award, Diomande returned to North America and excelled at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, spearheading the Elephants to their first-ever World Cup knockout match. “[His World Cup performances were] great, and I know he had a couple of games that… I wouldn’t say they were not good games; I just didn’t think he got the touches on the ball as he did in the first game,” stated Eason in an exclusive World Soccer Talk interview. “Again, no one really knew about him. If they’re playing some of the bigger countries that have some of those players that are from the Bundesliga on them, then they knew him. But no CONMEBOL / CONCACAF team had any idea who ‘Dio’ was, and they struggled with him because they didn’t know what he was. I think from the four games, the first game vs. Ecuador gave him the biggest exposure ever, and people were like, ‘Who the heck is this guy?’ “And luckily, Ivory Coast as a whole was a very strong team as well, which helped him be successful in those games, but I think as the tournament went on, he dealt with a lot of pressure from the outside. I think there were so many interviews…everybody wanted to interview him after the first game. Everybody wanted to capture this story, and I feel like he ended up taking on a lot that was off the field that maybe made him a little bit more stressed. Or maybe he was just a little bit exhausted by what a professional player had to do off the field. I saw that as

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright (Picture: Getty) Ian Wright has named his dark horses to challenge Arsenal this season as Mikel Arteta’s side prepare to begin their Premier League title defence. After an emphatic victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend, the Gunners now turn their attention to beginning the defence of their league title. Arsenal will kick off the new campaign at the Emirates against newly-promoted Coventry City on Friday as they look to lay down an early marker for the season ahead. New summer signings Christos Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes are expected to feature, but Wright still wants to see Arsenal bring in more marquee signings before the end of the transfer window. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. ‘Arsenal still have a lot of business to do and things have been slow up to this point,’ Wright told Metro. ‘I know the World Cup would have had a big effect on that, but as we know how important it is to start this league strong, the sooner those new players can come in, the better. ‘We heard what the manager said after the Champions League final defeat about what was needed for the next level for this club so that’s what we are going to hold the club to. Arsenal are set to begin their title defence on Friday (Picture: Getty) ‘The window of opportunity is now so I’m hopeful we end the window with a much stronger squad.’ Arsenal will head into the season as favourites, but predicting their closest rivals could prove difficult after a summer of overhaul for much of the ‘Big Six’. Enzo Maresca, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola have taken over at City, Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively, while Michael Carrick is preparing for his first full season in charge at Old Trafford. And despite their dismal tenth-place finish last season, Wright believes that a lack of European football could see Chelsea vault straight back into title contention under Alonso this time out. Chelsea have been tipped to thrive under Xabi Alonso (Picture: AP) ‘City, Chelsea and Liverpool all have new managers, which makes all of them a bit unknown,’ he said. ‘It’s a huge transition season for City: no Bernardo Silva, Stones, Pep and Rodri. But they have Haaland, and that’ll take you far regardless of other issues. ‘I fancy Chelsea to challenge if Alonso gets a good start and is able to make them more solid defensively. Gillette and Ian Wright are calling for an end to yellow cards for shirt-off goal celebrations (Picture: Greg Coleman) ‘He’s brought in some experienced players, which they’ve needed for a while. I can see them getting into a good rhythm without European football.’ And asked who else could cause a surprise this season, Wright added: ‘I’ll have my eye on Nottingham Forest now that Oliver Glasner has come in. ‘They have a lot of talent which they have held onto, Glasner is a very good coach, and they have made a couple of good signings. ‘Teams like Brighton, Bournemouth and Sunderland have Europe to contend with, which could affect them in the league to Forest’s advantage. ‘Spurs also have one game a week and have made big improvements. They probably still need a goalscorer but I’d expect them to shoot up the league.’ Wright backs new campaign to change football rule Wright was speaking to Metro after throwing his support behind Gillette’s campaign to stop footballers getting booked for taking their shirt off as a celebration. Recalling his favourite shirt-off celebration, the Gunners legend said: ‘I’d say the one when we played Aston Villa, with my “I love the lads” t-shirt. ‘Things were just starting to happen, we were making great moves as a team and I was having a great time with the boys; it was brilliant. That’s probably my best one. ‘Every time I see the picture I get the feeling of the dressing room and the joy we shared. Patrick was coming thr
