Viktor Gyokeres scored 14 goals last season to help Arsenal win the Premier League (Photo: Getty) Viktor Gyokeres has heaped praise on one of Arsenal’s summer signings but has dismissed any notion that they are the favourites to win the Premier League. Following their impressive Community Shield win over Manchester City, the Gunners begin their title defence against Championship champions Coventry City on Friday night. In Cardiff, Mikel Arteta handed a debut to £75million summer signing Bruno Guimaraes who performed well, but it was fellow debutant Christos Tzolis who really caught the eye. The Greek winger provided two assists, carrying over his good form from pre-season and from Club Brugge, where he recorded 22 goals and 29 assists last season. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. No player in Europe set up more goals last season, prompting Arteta to splash £34m on the former Norwich star, and Gyokeres reports that Tzolis is settling in nicely at the Emirates. ‘He’s a top guy. He’s a very nice guy outside and of course a very good player on the pitch,’ the striker told talkSPORT. ‘He contributes a lot and he’s very good in his decision making. In the final third, he makes good decisions there and managed to get a lot of goal contributions. Christos Tzolis got two assists on his Arsenal debut in the Community Shield (Photo: Getty) ‘That’s what every team needs and of course everyone that plays in our team wants to do that when they’re on the pitch and if he does that, it’s only good.’ With nearly all their main rivals changing managers and undergoing rebuilds this summer, Arsenal have been installed as the clear and early favourites to retain their title in 2026/27. But Gyokeres does not believe his team have gone from ‘the hunters to the hunted’, and insists anything can happen this season: ‘Everyone starts on zero points. Arsenal will start the season against Coventry – Gyokeres’ former club (Photo: Getty) ‘I think it doesn’t matter what they’ve done last season or the season before that or whatever. It’s a new season; it’s the same for everyone. ‘Everyone’s going to play the same amount of games. So, we have to do it all over again. ‘We don’t have to defend it, we just have to win as many games as we can and then hopefully, we’ll be there in the end again.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Findlay Curtis is a man on mission - to be one of the best players in the Premiership this season. The 19-year-old Rangers academy graduate has played a part in all five of the club's matches so far after a successful loan stint at Kilmarnock last term preceded a couple of appearances against Haiti and Brazil at the World Cup. Now Curtis aims to utilise that experience on the club front, starting with Thursday's Conference League play-off first leg against Jablonec.
Former Chelsea striker Carlton Cole (Picture: YouTube) Carlton Cole says Chelsea summer signing Morgan Rogers ‘messed up’ Arsenal’s transfer window by joining the Blues from Aston Villa. Rogers, 24, was heavily linked with Arsenal earlier in the summer and during England’s World Cup campaign. Mikel Arteta identified Rogers as one of his top targets to bolster a Gunners squad that won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final last season. Arsenal were believed to be leading the race to sign Rogers but Chelsea swooped in with an incredible £117m deal, making the West Brom academy graduate the most expensive British player in history. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Ex-England striker Cole believes Rogers’ decision to join Chelsea ‘messed up’ Arsenal’s transfer window and says the Gunners still need to sign another attacking midfielder who can play on the left. Arteta is a known admirer of Bradley Barcola but Arsenal are currently behind Liverpool in that particular transfer race as they are reluctant to meet PSG’s £140m asking price. ‘Arsenal’s squad depth is something else,’ West Ham hero and former Chelsea star Cole said on the Dressing Room podcast. Chelsea summer signing Morgan Rogers (Picture: Getty) ‘Bruno Guimaraes has come in – he’s a brilliant player – and I still think they probably want one more signing before the window shuts. ‘I know they’re still trying to do a little bit of business. I think they need another left-sided forward, they’re obvious in the running to sign Barcola – they need someone like that. ‘I think it was supposed to Morgan Rogers, he was supposed to go there, but he opted for Chelsea which messed up Arsenal because I think it was nearly done before Chelsea swooped in and he agreed to go there. Why Morgan Rogers chose Chelsea ‘I’m joining the biggest club in London,’ Rogers said at his Chelsea unveiling. ‘The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward, it is something that I want to be a part of and I think it was just perfect for me. ‘I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.’ https://www.instagram.com/p/DbFxKCfsDDX/?hl=en ‘I’ve heard that Barcola would prefer to go to Arsenal than Liverpool but Arsenal won’t pay the fee that’s required for him. Liverpool would still be a great place for him to flourish.’ While Cole believes Arsenal could do with securing one more major signing before the transfer deadline, he does expect the Gunners to retain their Premier League crown. Arteta’s side won the title by seven points last season and secured a statement 3-0 win over Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield. Mikel Arteta missed out on the England star (Picture: Getty) ‘I’m going to go with Arsenal to win the league ahead of Chelsea and Man City,’ Cole said when asked for his Premier League title prediction. ‘Arsenal have the best squad and if they get Victor Osimhen in as well they’re going to be flying. He will be up there for the Golden Boot if he goes to Arsenal. ‘But I think they’re still alright with what they’ve got at the moment. They just need to sort out that left-hand side. ‘Chelsea are an interesting one because they’ve got no European games, they haven’t got the Saturday-Tuesday fixture pill-up. ‘Xabi Alonso at the helm as well, he knows how to win games, he proved that at Bayer Leverkusen. ‘I just think that squad is very, very strong considering that don’t need to worry about European games. ‘I’ve put Man City third, I think they will find it tough without Pep Guardiola and Rodri, they’re going to find it hard.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Arsenal appear ‘way ahead’ of Manchester City, says Peter Crouch (That Peter Crouch Podcast) Peter Crouch says Arsenal look ‘way ahead’ of Manchester City and more than ‘ready’ for the season ahead on the basis of their Community Shield performance. Arsenal swept City aside in an utterly dominant display in Cardiff, with Enzo Maresca given a rude awakening in his first official match in the dugout. Riccardo Calafiori fired the Gunners in front inside 24 seconds to ensure City were up against it from minute one and Kai Havertz increased the deficit with a close-range header on the half-hour mark. The Premier League champions flew out of the blocks after the restart and within three minutes they were duly rewarded for their efforts as Martin Odegaard kept his composure to put the contest to bed. It proved an unforgettable day for Arsenal’s summer signing from Club Brugge, Christos Tzolis, who provided the assists for both Havertz and Odegaard on his full debut for Mikel Arteta’s side. Myles Lewis-Skelly also shone amid incessant rumours over his future, setting up Calafiori’s opener with an exquisite shimmy and through ball directly into the Italian’s path to get Arsenal up and running. The north Londoners will be looking to carry that same form into Friday night when kick off their Premier League title defence at home to Frank Lampard’s newly promoted Coventry. Al-Hilal have seen a second offer rejected (Picture: Ahmad Mora/Getty Images) Galatasaray have turned down a staggering offer from Saudi Arabia for Arsenal transfer target Victor Osimhen. The Gunners are intent on making further additions to their title-winning squad before the summer transfer window closes. Despite efforts from Mikel Arteta, Arsenal look set to miss out on Julian Alvarez who remains determined to join Barcelona if he is to leave Atletico Madrid this summer. Last week, Osimhen emerged as another option on Arsenal’s radar. The Nigeria international has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, admired by Manchester United over the years having come close to joining Chelsea in 2024. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. The 27-year-old has just begun his third season in Turkey with Arsenal enquiring into his availability during talks with Galatasaray over possible moves for Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri. Arsenal’s interest is not thought to have progressed any further at this stage with Saudi side Al-Hilal making the biggest move for the striker so far. The Saudi side have already made a verbal offer of €130million (£112m), ready to pay Osimhen an astronomical €50m (£42.7m) a year. Galatasaray responded by telling Al-Hilal they have no intention of selling their prized asset, but the Saudi side remain undeterred. Arsenal held talks over a move last week (Picture: Seskim Photo/MB Media/Getty Images) According to Türkiye Gazetesi, Al-Hilal have now increased their offer to a huge €150m (£128m). Gala president Dursan Ozebek however has ‘categorically rejected’ the offer, once again informing the Saudi club they are not interested in selling. The report adds that Osimhen has indicated money is not a priority for him when it comes to deciding his future. Reports elsewhere in Turkey have suggested Osimhen would be open to a move to Arsenal. Osimhen has long been linked withamove to the Premier League (Picture: Burak Basturk / Middle East Images / AFP via Getty Images) In an exclusive interview with Metro last year, John Obi Mikel claimed Osimhen was keen to join a club capable of winning the Champions League and advised him against a move to the Saudi Pro League. ‘I think we want to see him in the Champions League so maybe Arsenal might be the destination. Maybe there is a door open there for Victor,’ said Obi Mikel, who was involved in Chelsea’s failed bid to sign Osimhen two years ago. ‘I’ve had a few conversations with him. I won’t say much about what those conversations were but he is working to make sure he ends up at a top, top European league where he can showcase his talent and compete to win the Champions League.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United have set their sights on Carlos Baleba (Picture: Getty) Manchester United are reportedly on the cusp of signing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Baleba has established himself as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Premier League football across an impressive three-season spell at the Amex Stadium and has been on United’s radar for well over a year. It was uncertain if the Red Devils would step up their efforts to further strengthen in midfield after securing the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively. United had appeared on the verge of a total agreement to land Atalanta midfielder Ederson last month, but the Brazilian’s proposed switch to Old Trafford broke down at the eleventh hour. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes were also identified as potential targets, only for the trio to choose moves elsewhere in the Premier League, namely Manchester City and Tottenham. But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, United chiefs have made a breakthrough and are fast ‘closing in’ on Baleba to become their third addition in central midfield following Casemiro’s departure at the start of the window. It’s claimed United have submitted an initial bid in the region of £60million plus £5m in add-ons for the 22-year-old Cameroon international. Baleba has been a target for United stretching back over a year (Picture: Getty) While Brighton are reluctant to sell at that price as things stand, the report states that discussions remain ‘amicable’, with all parties eager to find a resolution. Baleba is currently sidelined with an ankle problem which he sustained in pre-season with the Seagulls. The injury is not believed to be overly serious, though, and there are hopes the Cameroonian will return to action before the end of September. The Red Devils have bid £65m for the Cameroon international (Picture: Getty) Baleba has made 112 appearances in all competitions for Brighton since arriving in English football from Lille back in 2023, chipping in with four goals and two assists in that time. Coincidently, Baleba’s last competitive appearance for Brighton came in the side’s 3-0 defeat to United back in late May. Baleba came off the substitutes bench that day and was unable to stop the rot as Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes were all on target against Fabian Hurzeler’s men. Over the winter, Baleba missed a total of six matches with Brighton after being called up by Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations, in which he made five appearances. United have already signed Tielemans from Aston Villa this summer (Picture: Getty) His current contract on the south coast is not due to expire until June 2028. Speaking ahead of Cameroon’s AFCON campaign in December, Baleba dismissed claims that persistent rumours over his future had negatively impacted his game. ‘I don’t think it affected me. But I had a lot of pressure on me,’ he said. Santos completed a move from Chelsea to Old Trafford last month (Picture: Getty) ‘When I started the season, I wanted to [have] the same performances as last season. Every day I try to work hard and to get [back] to my level. ‘Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think that’s good.’ With the clock ticking down on the summer transfer window, Michael Carrick has made no secret of the fact he would keen for more reinforcements to bolster his squad for the year ahead. ‘We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that,’ United’s new permanent head coach told the BBC last week. ‘Money’s money, I get that. We feel like we have to be pushing for everything we’re involved in, while being realistic of what the recent history’s looked like over a period of time. ‘For now, we’ve got to make the most of it, but we’ve got to push every boundary we
