Who will win the Carabao Cup this season? (Photo: Getty) Chelsea and Tottenham have both been drawn at home in the second round of the Carabao Cup, with their campaigns getting underway this month. The Carabao Cup kicked-off proper last weekend, with clubs up and down the EFL battling it out, all dreaming of reaching the final at Wembley in March. The second round of the competition is when things heat up as the 11 Premier League teams who did not qualify for Europe enter the draw. That means that, rather unusually, two of England’s biggest clubs, Chelsea and Tottenham are in the hat and will have to play an extra round compared to their typical rivals. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. By virtue of qualifying for the Champions League, holders Manchester City and last season’s finalists Arsenal will enter the cup in round three, as will Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool. The same applies for Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Sunderland and Brighton, who are competing in the Europa League and Conference League this season. Marcus Rashford had worn the iconic Man Utd No.10 shirt from 2018 to 2025 (Photo: Getty) Marcus Rashford has been handed a new shirt number upon his return to Manchester United, which may provide some insight into his future at the club. It was thought that Rashford had already played his final United game long ago after he frozen out of his boyhood club by Ruben Amorim in December 2024. Following loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, it was expected that the England forward would join the Spanish giants permanently, but they opted not to trigger his £26million buyout clause. That has left the 29-year-old in transfer limbo, with few clubs showing interest in him, while United have been reportedly reluctant to give him another shot. Following his exploits at the World Cup, Rashford finally returned to training on Sunday, linking up with the Red Devils for the first-time in over 18 months and was pictured in a jubilant mood, taking photos with fans and signing autographs. Michael Carrick has confirmed that Rashford will be part of the squad for their final two pre-season friendlies, saying: ‘We have a full squad next week in Dublin. ‘We fly straight there and meet Leeds on Wednesday. We have a few days in Dublin where we have the whole squad, including Marcus, Kobbie [Mainoo] and Lisandro [Martinez]. Rashford has trained with Man Utd for the first time in 18 months (Photo: Getty) ‘I’ve played with him [Rashford]. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history.’ While this alone is by no means confirmation that Rashford will be a United player this season, the club have hinted that will be the case after handing him a new squad number. The forward is unable to reclaim his prized No.10 shirt as it was given to Matheus Cunha upon his arrival from Wolves last summer. Rashford wore the No.14 while on loan at Barcelona (Photo: Getty) Even his old squad numbers, 19 and 39, are occupied by new players, namely Bryan Mbeumo and Tyler Fletcher. But, according to Fabrizio Romano, Rashford will now don the No.14, the shirt number he wore at Barcelona and one typically given to an important first-team member. At United, the No.14 shirt has previously been worn by the likes of Christian Eriksen, Jesse Lingard and Javier Hernandez. It is said United chose it in order to send a message of trust to the player and a sign that he will be reintegrated at Old Trafford, unless a deal can be struck with another club. Teams in Turkey and Saudi Arabia have approached Rashford, but he wants to play for a top European side in order to remain in the England squad. There have been links with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham butit seems he will back playing for his boyhood club this season. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Mikel Arteta is aiming for back-to-back Premier League titles with Arsenal (Picture: Getty Images) Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is expecting ‘great things’ from the Blues this year, as they are able to focus on the Premier League without European distractions. It was a disappointing campaign last time round at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on any kind of European football for this season. However, Sanchez is looking on the bright side of the situation and sees the positives that will come in their league campaign as a result. The Blues have brought in Xabi Alonso as manager and Sanchez reckons his compatriot will have Chelsea riding high in the Premier League in the near future. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. ‘I think this year is a positive,” he said. “It can be a good thing that we do not have a European tournament, because we can focus on the league. ‘It is good for us as a team and as a squad because we get that time, one game a week, and I have a feeling we can do great things this year. ‘We have a new manager, and we are still trying to understand his game plan, what he wants from us. The most important thing [in pre-season] is everyone is getting minutes and putting in a good effort. The boys have done that. Robert Sanchez has high hopes for Chelsea under Xabi Alonso (Picture: REUTERS) ‘He [Alonso] is not rushing anything. He is checking every game, every area we are doing, and we are slowly integrating new things. Day by day, we are learning more, and we are hopefully getting better game by game.’ Sanchez has come in for criticism during his time at Chelsea, but he looks set to be first choice in goal again this season. The former Brighton stopper says the new manager has filled him with confidence ahead of the new campaign. ‘I feel amazing,’ he said. ‘Xabi has given me all the confidence in the world. He understands the strengths of every individual. He understands my strengths. He is going to allow me to do what I am best at this season. ‘He has brought a different attitude, a lot of calm, into the squad. He is a really calm person. He brings that as a player because he used to play. I like his idea of football. ‘I don’t want to talk too much about it, but I like what he brings to the club and the staff. Everyone that has come is brilliant as well. I have a good feeling.’ Chelsea’s pre-season preparations continued on Sunday with a 3-3 draw with Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta’zim, which saw Liam Delap score twice from the penalty spot. The Blues beat AC Milan 3-0 in a friendly on Saturday, so Alonso named an entirely different team against the Malaysian side.
