Krystian Bielik grabbed a young Portsmouth supporter by the throat Krystian Bielik grabbed a young Portsmouth supporter by the throat during Cardiff City’s 2-0 defeat in the Championship on Saturday. The incident occurred during the second half at Fratton Park when the Portsmouth fan had caught the ball and threw it away from Bielik, who was trying to take a quick throw-in. Bielik responded by grabbing the throat of the supporter, who then stood up and slapped the Cardiff City midfielder on the head. Following the confrontation, the young Portsmouth supporter was seen gesturing to a nearby steward that Bielik had grabbed him by the throat. Portsmouth FC should give off about this and Bielek needs suspending! pic.twitter.com/9Np1k8Xl3i— Charlie Barnes (@ChaltJames) September 5, 2026 Speaking about the incident after the game, Cardiff City manager Brian Barry-Murphy said: ‘Krystian went to get the ball back from the stands and got slapped in the face. ‘I wanted to make sure he [Bielik] was protected and make sure he was okay, which he is. I thought the referee and his staff handled the incident impeccably. I was assured by him the correct processes will take place. He said he’d seen everything which occurred really clearly, so he diffused the situation and implemented the correct processes from there. ‘The players are always subjected to different things that’s not acceptable. My job is to protect the players, but really I’m trying to make sure that we play well and win. ‘I’m sure the FA will look at it and implement the correct processes.’ The defeat leaves Cardiff 22nd in the Championship and the Bluebirds are still searching for their first win in the league this season after five games played. Bielik was signed by Arsenal at the age of 17 as he was signed in a £2.4 million deal from Legia Warsaw in 2015. The midfielder only made two first-team appearances during his time at Arsenal before leaving permanently in 2019. Bielik has also made 11 appearances for Poland’s national side. Mikel Arteta has described Gabriel Martinelli as a ‘critical player’ for Arsenal (PA Wire) Mikel Arteta insists Gabriel Martinelli has been a ‘critical player’ for Arsenal following his move to Al-Hilal. Martinelli joined Arsenal at the age of 18 and went on to score 62 goals in 278 appearances for the Gunners. However, Arsenal and Arteta received strong criticism over the handling of Martinelli’s exit, with Ian Wright accusing his former club of being ‘disrespectful’ to the Brazilian winger. ‘For him to be nowhere near it [the squad], it makes me feel sad for him,’ Wright said after Arsenal’s win over Coventry City last month. Ian Wright criticised Arsenal over their handling of Gabriel Martinelli’s exit (Getty) Arteta, meanwhile, paid tribute to Martinelli following his Arsenal departure. ‘With great gratitude, it’s been a pleasure to work with him, to be part of this journey with him,’ Arteta said. ‘The Gabi that I met and the Gabi that just left, it’s a huge transformation, both in the personal side and in the professional side. ‘I think the impact that he had for the club, his ambition, his love for the game and the way he has, I think, helped us to grow and achieve our goals. ‘I think he’s been a critical player. The story ends and we wish him all the very best in a different one. This is part of football.’ Arteta was also about Arsenal’s failure to sign another left-sided attacking player to replace Martinelli. ‘These are just opinions,’ Arteta said. ‘The window is closed and I prefer to look at all the incredible things that we have in this squad and not to spend any more time on the things that are not part of us right now. That’s it and that’s my main responsibility.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
