Raúl Jiménez marked his return to Wolves with the stoppage-time equaliser that saved them from an embarrassing start to their return to the Championship. The Mexico striker, who scored against England during the World Cup finals, retained his composure to convert a penalty given for handball by Rayan Alebiosu that would have had VAR questioning whether the defender was in the area when Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross struck his arm. Thankfully for Wolves, the video assistant referee is no longer their problem. Jiménez, who had bought scarves for all supporters in the South Bank in gratitude for their response to welcoming him home, tucked away his first goal in this second spell for the club he graced during their recent heyday. The two sides renew their rivalry this weekend (Picture: Getty) Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the Community Shield on Sunday with the first piece of silverware of the season set to be handed out. While the traditional curtain-raiser is viewed by some as little more than a glorified friendly, both teams will nevertheless be keen to head into the new campaign with a dose of positivity. But perhaps surprisingly, victory in the annual game does not historically translate to success in the Premier League season ahead. Of the past 15 teams to have won the Community Shield, only one side has gone on to win the league title at the end of that season. That team is Manchester City, who completed the Community Shield and Premier League double in the 2018/19 season. And in the Premier League era as a whole, only eight of the 34 winners of the Shield have gone on to win the trophy, with five of these happening in a six-year period from 2005 until 2010. As a matter of fact, the Community Shield runners-up have actually been more successful in the league than the winners themselves. Manchester City went on to win the league in 2018/19 (Picture: Getty) Since 1992, the losers have won ten league titles compared to the eight picked up by the winners. Three of these instances were Manchester City, who were beaten three seasons in a row between 2021 and 2023. And of the 34 Premier League winners, 15 weren’t even involved in the game itself. What’s more, the winners and runners-up have only finished as the top two teams in the Premier League on ten occasions. Last year’s winners, Crystal Palace, ended up finishing 15th in the league – although it was unrealistic to expect Oliver Glasner’s side to compete for the title. The beaten team, Liverpool, could only manage a disappointing fifth place under Arne Slot. Of the 34 Community Shield winners in the Premier League era, 18 won the league title in the previous season, while 13 were the FA Cup holders. But while the Premier League champions have a better success rate in the one-off game, the FA Cup winners have won eight of the past 12 Community Shields – including Palace last year. The other three Community Shield winners since 1992 were neither the Premier League nor FA Cup winners. Arsenal (1999 and 2023) and Manchester United (2010) only played in the game as Premier League runners-up and ended up beating the Double winners to claim the trophy. The Community Shield is taking centre stage this weekend (Picture: Getty) Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday with the first piece of silverware of the season up for grabs. But the traditional curtain-raiser will not be staged at Wembley, with the Principality Stadium in Cardiff hosting the game instead. This is because The Weekend have booked Wembley from August 14 until August 19 as part of their ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ tour. This means Arsenal face a trip of around 130 miles from London to Cardiff, while Manchester City will be making their own 140 mile journey from the North West. The clash in the Welsh capital will be the third time the Community Shield has taken place away from Wembley since the national stadium reopened in 2007. Villa Park played host to Chelsea vs Manchester City in 2012 when Wembley was being used to host football at the Olympics. And it was Leicester’s King Power Stadium that was chosen to host the 2022 edition between Manchester City and Liverpool, when Wembley was busy staging the Women’s European Championship final. Arsenal beat Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final in Cardiff (Picture: Getty) Principality is no stranger to hosting big games The Principality Stadium, which was referred to as the Millennium Stadium at the time, was the venue for the FA Cup final and the Community Shield between 2001 and 2006 and for the League Cup final between 2001 and 2007. Moving English football’s domestic cup finals to Cardiff was due to the old Wembley being demolished and the new Wembley being built in its place. The stadium was also chosen to host the 2017 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus, which the Spanish giants won 4-1. Wales used the Millennium Stadium for their home games between 2000 and 2009, before moving the majority of their fixtures to the Cardiff City Stadium. The Principality Stadium mainly hosts rugby matches (Picture: Getty) The Welsh rugby team, meanwhile, has continuously used the venue for its home games since the stadium opened in 1999. The ground, which has a capacity of just under 74,000 and is the fourth-largest in the UK, will host six games at Euro 2028 including the opening match and a quarter-final. It is also the only major multi-purpose stadium in the UK which has a fully retractable roof – although it will be open for the game on Sunday.
