BOBBY MANZI AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: There were perhaps expected boos when his name was read out before kick-off, with the World Cup runner-up starting on the bench.
Sesko not in the squad taking on Milan today (Picture: Manchester United via Getty Images) Benjamin Sesko is not in the squad for Manchester United’s final pre-season match against AC Milan this afternoon. The Slovenia international has not played a minute of the pre-season campaign, missing all six games ahead of next weekend’s Premier League opener against Hull City. After a relatively slow start, Sesko shone following Michael Carrick’s arrival at Old Trafford last season, starring in the super-sub role. He scored his 12th goal of the season in the victory over Liverpool in May but it proved to be his last contribution for the season. The former RB Leipzig star aggravated a shin injury in that game, taking a nasty tumble down the infamous Old Trafford dip around the pitch, crashing into the advertising boards. At the time, it wasn’t thought to have been a serious issue. But almost four months later, he is still to return having also had a whole summer off to recover. In addition to Sesko, Mason Mount is also not involved against Milan in Poland after coming off in the 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain with a knock. Sesko has trained but not played a minute of pre-season (Picture: Manchester United via Getty Images) Will Sesko be fit for Man Utd’s season opener against Hull? Even if passed fit, it seems unlikely Sesko will be deemed ready to lead the line for United at the MKM Stadium against Hull next Saturday afternoon. The striker has not played since that game against Liverpool in May. Carrick often favoured the 23-year-old coming off the bench last season and he may have to settle for that role again with no pre-season under his belt. Bryan Mbeumo has led the line this summer and has looked fit, sharp and effective in that role through the middle. The Cameroon international seems the leading contender to start up top next weekend. Chelsea striker Liam Delap (Picture: Getty) Liam Delap is keen to remain in the Premier League after Como reportedly made an approach to sign the Chelsea striker. Chelsea beat a host of rivals, most notably Manchester United, to sign Delap in a £30million deal from Ipswich Town last summer. Much was expected of the young Englishman after a promising first season in the English top flight with Ipswich, but Delap struggled to kick on in his maiden season at Stamford Bridge. In a campaign affected by injury and suspension, Delap only scored two goals in 41 appearances and was forced to play backup to fellow summer signing Joao Pedro. And Delap appears to have fallen further down the pecking order this summer after the arrival of Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck as well as the return of Nicolas Jackson from his loan spell at Bayern Munich. Chelsea are said to value Delap at £40m, with a host of Premier League clubs said to be interested in signing the 23-year-old. However, there is also interest from abroad, with Como making an approach to sign Delap in recent days. But talkSPORT reports that Delap is keen to stay in the Premier League and wait for offers from English top-flight clubs. Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have all previously been credited with interest in the former Ipswich striker. Chelsea are also willing to sell Nicolas Jackson before the end of the window (Picture: Getty) Delap might not be the only striker heading for the exit this summer at Chelsea, with the club also open to offers for Jackson. Chelsea are said to value Jackson at £65m, with Aston Villa and Newcastle United both said to have made approaches for the Senegalese international. Speaking earlier in the pre-season when asked about Jackson’s future, new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso said: ‘Yes, Nico is a great player. ‘He’s a threat to play against any defence, so we want to have players that can compete, and Nico for sure is one of them. ‘We need to go day by day checking options, but we are happy that Nico is with us.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page.
