BBC Radio Newcastle's Sunderland commentator Nick Barnes says there is "no anxiety" from Regis le Bris and those around him, despite the lack of signings so far this summer. Thomas Meunier, on a free, remains the only incoming thus far in the window, but Barnes believes the club will still land their transfer targets. "There's general frustration all round with trying to get players out and trying to get players in," he said.
Defender Nobel Mendy says he is "ready" for the challenge of the Premier League, after completing his move to Hull City from Rayo Vallecano for an undisclosed club-record fee. Mendy made his first senior Senegal appearance in March 2026 and featured 28 times for Rayo Vallecano last season.
Hull City has reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to sign Nobel Mendy, according to Fabrizio Romano. The newly promoted Premier League club will pay €25 million for the Senegalese defender. Rayo will also receive 12.5% of any future transfer fee if Hull eventually sells Mendy. "I don't think Sunderland will be anywhere near the relegation zone," says sports journalist Ian Murtagh, despite Regis le Bris' side "entering the unknown" after securing European football. The Black Cats have gone from the third tier of English football to the Premier League, and now the Europa League, in just four years. "Sunderland are entering the unknown in the sense that they won't just be playing 40 to 42 games this season, they will be playing over 50 games," Murtagh explained.
Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini strongly supports the club's endeavours to "keep hold of their key players" ahead of the 2026-27 season, after Regis le Bris highlighted the need to be "really precise" in the transfer window. Belgium international Thomas Meunier is the only player to arrive on a permanent deal so far, having joined on a free transfer from Lille. "Like most Sunderland fans, I'm checking the BBC Sport website regularly just to make sure I haven't missed anything," Gabbiadini told BBC Radio Newcastle.
Mykhailo Mudryk is back available for Chelsea (Picture: Reuters) Mykhailo Mudryk has made his transfer preference clear after Chelsea reportedly ruled out selling the winger this summer. Mudryk was unavailable to play for almost two years after he was suspended for returning an ‘adverse finding’ for the banned substance meldonium. However, the Ukrainian has now been cleared to play again after resolving his doping case with the Football Association. Mudryk subsequently joined up with Chelsea’s pre-season tour, making three brief cameo appearances off the bench against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta’zim. However, after nearly two seasons without a first-team appearance, it appears likely that the 25-year-old will go out on loan to get regular minutes and demonstrate his level after such a long lay-off. Widespread reports indicate that Chelsea are not considering a sale for Mudryk this summer, with several clubs across Europe interested in a loan for the winger. Frank Lampard’s Coventry City have been linked with a move for Mudryk as the former Chelsea boss looks to add firepower to his squad ahead of their Premier League return. Speaking last week about Mudryk’s Chelsea future, Xabi Alonso said: ‘Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of a team, and we need to assess [how he is doing]. Mudryk is set to leave Chelsea on loan before deadline day (Picture: Getty) ‘But for sure, he’s a special player. It’s a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive.’ Meanwhile, Chelsea teammate Tosin Adarabioyo was full of praise for Mudryk’s attitude during his 20-month absence, saying of the Ukrainian: ‘Misha is a freak. His work rate is unbelievable. There is no doubt he has been working hard throughout this whole time. ‘I know he has been doing sessions away. I have seen him. I know the guys he has been working with, so it’s good. ‘Misha is my guy. I have kept in contact with him throughout and it is really nice to have him back. I am really happy for him. ‘You can see he is just really happy to be around and back in the environment.
