Nottingham Forest remain in the frame for the Netherlands international but he is weighing up whether to accept the offer to link up with coach Brendan Rodgers.

New Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle (Picture: Getty) Newcastle United have set their sights on signing a new midfielder after selling Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. The Magpies were reluctant to lose Brazil international Guimaraes, who has developed into a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park over the past four seasons. But Arsenal’s strong push for the 28-year-old and Guimaraes’ desire to leave forced Newcastle to sell for a fee of £75m. Newcastle have welcomed two midfielders to the club, 20-year-old Aladji Bamba and 18-year-old Sean Steur, but neither are seen as direct replacements for Guimaraes. New boss Matthias Jaissle wants a more experienced midfielder to arrive at St James’ Park, hence why Newcastle recently expressed interest in former Tottenham captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. But BBC Sport say Hojbjerg is ‘only one of a handful of options Newcastle are considering’ for Jaissle, who has replaced Eddie Howe in the hot-seat. Newcastle were forced to sell Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal (Picture: Getty) A separate report from the Daily Mail says Newcastle have made an approach to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Jaissle is said to be an ‘admirer’ of Baleba, who was close to joining Manchester United this time last year only to stay on the south coast. United were widely tipped to revive their interest in Baleba this summer but turned to other options, signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Brighton star and Man Utd target Carlos Baleba (Picture: Getty) Michael Carrick remains open to signing a third new midfielder but the £35m deal for Tielemans is already the best buy of the summer, according to Nicky Butt. ‘I think Youri Tielemans is the best signing of the transfer window,’ Butt said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, sponsored by Midnite. ‘Looking at his fee, his age, his experience – he’s played in the Champions League and World Cups and he’s a great footballer. I think that’s a brilliant signing for Manchester United.’ Asked who he rates as the best signing of the summer transfer window, Butt added: ‘I think it’s Youri Tielemans. ‘If he was up at £70m or £80m I would give you a different answer but you need to look at the value for money. ‘If Manchester United get the right players around him I think he will be the best summer signing.’ Jaissle’s first Premier League game in charge of Newcastle United will be a tricky clash against Liverpool on the opening weekend of the season. Mikel Arteta is keen to sign a new defender for Arsenal (Picture: Getty) Arsenal have reopened talks with Aston Villa over a deal for Ezri Konsa and decided the maximum fee they will pay for the England defender. Mikel Arteta is keen to sign a new defender before the summer transfer window closes after losing William Saliba for an ‘extended period’. Saliba injured his back during France’s World Cup campaign and will miss at least the start of the new Premier League campaign. Arsenal were admirers of Konsa even before Saliba’s injury setback but have stepped up their interest since the World Cup finished. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. Konsa, 28, has made almost 300 appearances for Aston Villa since joining the Midlands club from Brentford in 2019, helping them qualify for the Champions League and last season win the Europa League. The Charlton academy graduate has also become a regular for England and featured heavily at this summer’s World Cup under Thomas Tuchel. Arsenal first held talks with Villa last month but negotiations stalled due to a disagreement over a fee for Konsa. Aston Villa and England star Ezri Konsa (Picture: PA) According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League champions have reopened talks with Aston Villa as they try to bring Konsa to north London. However, Villa want £60m for the England star and The Times say in a separate report that Arsenal have so far only shown a willingness to pay £45m. Konsa has not featured in any of Aston Villa’s pre-season fixtures as he was given extra time off following England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals. He is expected to feature in their Premier League opener against Brighton on August 23, however, unless a move to Arsenal materialises. Arsenal’s William Saliba suffered an injury at the World Cup (Picture: Getty) Konsa is believed to be open to joining the Gunners, who clinched their first Premier League title since 2004 last season while reaching the final of the Champions League. Arsenal begin their title defence against newly-promoted Coventry City a week on Friday but will be without star defender Saliba. ‘William Saliba has returned to us from World Cup duty, where he played an integral role in France reaching the semi-finals of the competition,’ Arsenal said in a statement. ‘Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation. ‘Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme. ‘William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period. ‘Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. The Portugal international is seemingly facing something of an uncertain future at Old Trafford, as he’s in the final year of his contract and yet to reach an agreement over a new deal. About to start his ninth season, his first under a club manager who isn’t Pep Guardiola, this could be the year we finally find out who the City enigma isPhil Foden says he is excited about working under Enzo Maresca, his new manager at Manchester City. We should call this exactly what it is: a very obvious barefaced lie. No doubt Foden is excited about playing football again, about challenging for trophies with his boyhood club, the new Premier League season, his new contract, a fresh start, etc, etc.But let’s be real. Holidays are something you get excited about. Birthdays. Weddings. Amazon deliveries. The new Charli xcx album. Christmas. Playing for Enzo Maresca inspires plenty of emotions, but excitement would probably feature pretty low down a list. At best, you brace for Maresca. You steel yourself. You look in the mirror every morning and ask yourself whether you’re man enough for him. But if you’re excited, then he simply isn’t doing his job. Continue reading...

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso (Picture: Getty) Chelsea have been urged to consider a shock deal to sign ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United. New boss Xabi Alonso has overseen another Chelsea spending spree this summer, with the Blues splashing out over £300m on over ten new signings. Despite the huge spending, Chelsea have resisted the urge to bring a new goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge despite Robert Sanchez’s issues and Filip Jorgensen’s departure. Chelsea were heavily linked with signing a new shot-stopper last summer but appear ready to go into the new Premier League season with Sanchez as Alonso’s No. 1. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. But ex-Manchester United defender Quinton Fortune has suggested Chelsea should enter the race for unwanted Old Trafford goalkeeper Onana. United sent Onana on loan to Trabzonspor last season after signing Senne Lammens, who impressed throughout the campaign. The Red Devils are open to offers for Onana but a sale is proving tricky due to the goalkeeper’s significant wages and his desire to force his way back into the team. Man Utd’s Andre Onana spent last season at Trabzonspor (Picture: Getty) That appears unlikely given Lammens’ development, however, and Fortune believes Onana could emerge as a target for Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa. ‘Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,’ Fortune told Premier Bet. ‘You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point. Manchester United No. 1 Senne Lammens (Picture: Getty) ‘When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it. ‘He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. ‘I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding.’ Robert Sanchez has struggled at Chelsea (Picture: Getty) Fortune also says he ‘wishes’ Manchester United had beaten Chelsea to a summer deal for Danny Welbeck. Welbeck completed a somewhat surprising move from Brighton to Stamford Bridge last month but Fortune has praised Chelsea’s transfer decision. ‘Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United,’ the former Premier League winner added. ‘By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid. ‘He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck. ‘They are not only top, top players but great professionals too.’ Chelsea face west London rivals Fulham in their Premier League opener on August 24 and will be desperate to improve on last season’s 10th-place finish.
