Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown (Picture: Getty) Martin Keown believes Martin Odegaard is still ‘under pressure’ in an Arsenal shirt after the Gunners picked up a 3-0 win over Coventry City on Friday. The Premier League champions got their title defence underway with a flawless performance against the newly-promoted Sky Blues at the Emirates. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka put Arsenal in control early on before Odegaard added a third shortly after the break. But Keown believes the Norwegian midfielder needs to maintain those levels, especially after an injury-hit campaign last season, in which he only started 16 league matches. ‘We need him back,’ Keown told Stan Sport at full-time. ‘He’s probably the one player who’s under more pressure than anybody else because he’s got Eze in the background and young Dowman is going to be an amazing talent. Martin Odegaard got on the scoresheet against Coventry (Picture: Getty) ‘So it’s important our captain is actually leading the way, and he was great again tonight.’ Fellow goalscorer Saka was another who dealt with injuries towards the end of last season, but looked back to his dangerous best in the opening match of this campaign. Asked about the England winger’s performance, Keown added: ‘Every time he gets the ball, he has to do damage. ‘Last season, of course, the Achilles wasn’t at his best. It looks as if he’s over those handicaps and we can see the best of him. @flemingben An ominous display from the defending champions… 😬😬 #arsenalfc #premierleague #coventry ♬ original sound – Ben Fleming: Sports Journalist ‘He’s a tremendous, very humble individual; he kind of sets the standards. ‘He’s been the key player for Arteta since he’s been at the club and in order for Arsenal to win things, he’s got to be at his best. So good news that he doesn’t have any injury concerns anymore.’ And Keown was also keen to highlight the performance of new signing Christos Tzolis, who impressed in his first league start following his £34million move from Club Brugge earlier this summer. ‘I thought he was as good as a debutant, as I’ve seen since maybe Freddie Ljungberg back in the day,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to go overboard, but everything he did, the first goal he’s involved in, he shuts the ball down. He’s involved, obviously, as well for the cross when Saka scores. ‘It was a shame Bruno wasn’t fit because, between the two of them last year, I think they had 54 goal involvements, but this kid is looking to me like a really good signing.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Sesko could have some role to play this weekend (Picture: Manchester United) Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign away to newly-promoted Hull City this afternoon. Summer transfer business at Old Trafford is not done yet with the club working on getting a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba over the line. Santos featured heavily in pre-season with Tielemans joining up three weeks ago. Frank Lampard says he felt Arsenal’s ‘physicality’ from the touchline (Coventry City) Frank Lampard believes Arsenal showed exactly why they are the Premier League champions after Coventry City’s 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night. Arsenal got their new Premier League season off to an excellent start as goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard secured the victory over Lampard’s side. Coventry, who won the Championship by an 11-point margin last season, were unable to pose a threat to Arsenal in their Premier League return and registered just one shot on target. Lampard admits his Coventry players struggled to cope with Arsenal’s defensive organisation and said he felt the ‘physicality’ from Arteta’s side from the touchline. Arsenal got off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Coventry City (Getty) ‘It’s very, very hard to high press this team because they’ll play through you and rip through you. ‘So we decided we wanted to be more in the middle of the pitch, and I thought we did some work really, really well to delay and work the sides, and then they just need a few moments to hurt you. ‘A very, all round strong unit they’ve built. @flemingben An ominous display from the defending champions… 😬😬 #arsenalfc #premierleague #coventry ♬ original sound – Ben Fleming: Sports Journalist ‘It’s a clear step up, we know that, across the league but Arsenal are the best at it, they proved it last year and we felt that tonight. Little about the office tucked into the corner of the Academy of Light gives any clue it belongs to the man leading Sunderland's first European adventure in over half a century.
Theo Walcott believes ‘little details’ will influence Mikel Arteta’s selection decisions for Arsenal (Premier League) Theo Walcott believes Mikel Arteta will not be happy with Eberechi Eze after Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City on Friday night. The Premier League champions made an excellent start to the new season as goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard sealed the victory at the Emirates Stadium. Eze, meanwhile, started the game as a substitute and came off the bench to replace Christos Tzolis with 14 minutes remaining. However, Walcott feels that Arteta would have been less than impressed with Eze’s speculative long-range free-kick in the closing stages of the game which went high over the bar and says those ‘little details’ will play a major role in the Arsenal manager’s selection choices this season. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. I felt some could have done a little bit more coming on maybe, but it’s the first game of the season and you’ve got to give them the benefit of the doubt. ‘It’s just a reminder to the guys who aren’t starting that it’s a big, deep squad. If you want to be in that starting line-up, there are standards that Mikel will be looking into. ‘Eze having that shot at the end… I’m not sure he [Arteta] will be happy with that. I know it’s such a small thing but these are little details that he will look into each individual player if he’s going to be with them throughout the season, that’s just a sign to see.’ @flemingben An ominous display from the defending champions… 😬😬 #arsenalfc #premierleague #coventry ♬ original sound – Ben Fleming: Sports Journalist Walcott was also impressed by Tzolis’ performance in his first Premier League game for Arsenal following his £34 million move from Club Brugge earlier this summer. ‘I like him a lot, he reminds me of Alexi [Sanchez],’ Walcott said. ‘The reason why I say that, when he gets the ball his first touch is positive, his first thought is forward, attack the full-back. Alexi would always give the full-back a headache and even wearing the number 17 reminds he of him, I know he moved to the number seven when Tomas Rosicky moved on, ‘However, there’s something about the way he moves with the ball, he glides on the field, they want to keep on giving it to him as well, I think you can see the confidence is growing and growing, he has go a bit more pace about him than Trossard does, so he’s a bit of a hybrid between Trossard and Alexis. ‘But very impressed, when he gets fitter and players get to know his game a lot more, but I like what I see so far, really impressed.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Gary Neville believes a ‘world-class forward’ could be the difference for Arsenal in the Champions League (Sky Sports) Gary Neville believes Arsenal will be strong contenders to win the Champions League this season if they sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. Arsenal got their new Premier League campaign off to a flying start on Friday night as goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard sealed a 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. Summer signing Christos Tzolis delivered an impressive performance on Arsenal’s left flank but Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his attacking options even further before the end of the summer transfer window. Alvarez is one of Arteta’s top attacking targets, however, Atletico Madrid have been adamant that the Argentine will not be sold this summer. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Neville insists Arsenal are already in a strong position to retain their Premier League title but feels the addition of Alvarez could prove to be the difference to the Gunners’ Champions League campaign this season. ‘What a squad he [Arteta] has built here and if he adds another forward into that then I don’t see how anyone can stop them,’ Neville told Sky Sports. Julian Alvarez has said he wants to leave Atletico Madrid this summer (Getty) ‘We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona but if they could get Alvarez somehow Arsenal, I mean that is going to light this place up because you’ve then got a world-class striker to go with all the world-class defenders and midfield players. ‘And they become, not just Premier League title winners, you then think they can go the extra step and win a Champions League as well. ‘It’s massive this next ten days, he [Arteta] needs that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well, they’ll go and win a big game for you. Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure. ‘He [Alvarez] is exceptional on the ball, his understanding of the game is fantastic. I’m being respectful here to Havertz and Gyokeres… but if there was an Ian Wright up front for Arsenal who makes those short runs, he [Odegaard] would be even better. ‘I think because Gyokeres always come to the play and so does Havertz, he [Odegaard] is always playing possession in the final third, rather than playing those slip through passes, which I think could be so dangerous. ‘If Arsenal were to sign Alvarez, I actually think he [Odegaard] would go up a level as well himself as it would be perfect for the style of play. I think he’s a fantastic player. ‘I actually thought when [Eberechi] Eze came in he would take Odegaard’s spot but he looks like he’s re-established himself.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. And yes, we did actually go away for a bit. Seriously. Check back. Lay these end-to-end and that adds up to about 3,000 hours, or 125 whole days doing nothing but watching football. Chuck in the endless over-gorge of clips, highlights, noises off, VAR rage, furious punditry shemozzles, and that’s pretty much the next eight months spent slumped in your memory foam chair, cramming in those great dripping handfuls of sweet, sweet football-derived product.
