New Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle (Picture: Getty) Newcastle United have set their sights on signing a new midfielder after selling Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. The Magpies were reluctant to lose Brazil international Guimaraes, who has developed into a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park over the past four seasons. But Arsenal’s strong push for the 28-year-old and Guimaraes’ desire to leave forced Newcastle to sell for a fee of £75m. Newcastle have welcomed two midfielders to the club, 20-year-old Aladji Bamba and 18-year-old Sean Steur, but neither are seen as direct replacements for Guimaraes. New boss Matthias Jaissle wants a more experienced midfielder to arrive at St James’ Park, hence why Newcastle recently expressed interest in former Tottenham captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. But BBC Sport say Hojbjerg is ‘only one of a handful of options Newcastle are considering’ for Jaissle, who has replaced Eddie Howe in the hot-seat. Newcastle were forced to sell Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal (Picture: Getty) A separate report from the Daily Mail says Newcastle have made an approach to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Jaissle is said to be an ‘admirer’ of Baleba, who was close to joining Manchester United this time last year only to stay on the south coast. United were widely tipped to revive their interest in Baleba this summer but turned to other options, signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Brighton star and Man Utd target Carlos Baleba (Picture: Getty) Michael Carrick remains open to signing a third new midfielder but the £35m deal for Tielemans is already the best buy of the summer, according to Nicky Butt. ‘I think Youri Tielemans is the best signing of the transfer window,’ Butt said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, sponsored by Midnite. ‘Looking at his fee, his age, his experience – he’s played in the Champions League and World Cups and he’s a great footballer. I think that’s a brilliant signing for Manchester United.’ Asked who he rates as the best signing of the summer transfer window, Butt added: ‘I think it’s Youri Tielemans. ‘If he was up at £70m or £80m I would give you a different answer but you need to look at the value for money. ‘If Manchester United get the right players around him I think he will be the best summer signing.’ Jaissle’s first Premier League game in charge of Newcastle United will be a tricky clash against Liverpool on the opening weekend of the season. Chelsea have entered the increasingly competitive race for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, joining Liverpool and Manchester United in tracking one of Ligue 1’s most highly rated young players. Manchester United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes reportedly has interest from Juventus, AC Milan, and Galatasaray this summer. Pre-game, captain John McGinn promised Aston Villa fans they could still expect "as much as possible" this season despite the high-profile exits of Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans. A battling performance in Austria backed those words up as, even in this defeat by PSG, Villa scared the European champions for a second time in 18 months, following their 5-4 Champions League last-eight defeat in 2025. No Ollie Watkins, Emi Martinez and Ezri Konsa - given more time off after the World Cup - which allowed teenager Brian Madjo to finally show what he can do after Villa won their appeal to register him, and 19-year-old midfielder George Hemmings also getting a start.
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso (Picture: Getty) Chelsea have been urged to consider a shock deal to sign ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United. New boss Xabi Alonso has overseen another Chelsea spending spree this summer, with the Blues splashing out over £300m on over ten new signings. Despite the huge spending, Chelsea have resisted the urge to bring a new goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge despite Robert Sanchez’s issues and Filip Jorgensen’s departure. Chelsea were heavily linked with signing a new shot-stopper last summer but appear ready to go into the new Premier League season with Sanchez as Alonso’s No. 1. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. But ex-Manchester United defender Quinton Fortune has suggested Chelsea should enter the race for unwanted Old Trafford goalkeeper Onana. United sent Onana on loan to Trabzonspor last season after signing Senne Lammens, who impressed throughout the campaign. The Red Devils are open to offers for Onana but a sale is proving tricky due to the goalkeeper’s significant wages and his desire to force his way back into the team. Man Utd’s Andre Onana spent last season at Trabzonspor (Picture: Getty) That appears unlikely given Lammens’ development, however, and Fortune believes Onana could emerge as a target for Premier League rivals Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa. ‘Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League,’ Fortune told Premier Bet. ‘You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point. Manchester United No. 1 Senne Lammens (Picture: Getty) ‘When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it. ‘He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. ‘I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding.’ Robert Sanchez has struggled at Chelsea (Picture: Getty) Fortune also says he ‘wishes’ Manchester United had beaten Chelsea to a summer deal for Danny Welbeck. Welbeck completed a somewhat surprising move from Brighton to Stamford Bridge last month but Fortune has praised Chelsea’s transfer decision. ‘Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United,’ the former Premier League winner added. ‘By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid. ‘He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck. ‘They are not only top, top players but great professionals too.’ Chelsea face west London rivals Fulham in their Premier League opener on August 24 and will be desperate to improve on last season’s 10th-place finish. Even though Lionel Messi made his return to the team, Inter Miami ended up being eliminated from the 2026 Leagues Cup in the first phase. Inter Miami entered Matchday 3 of the 2026 Leagues Cup requiring a victory and a favorable slate of out-of-town results across MLS to stay alive in the tournament. However, despite Lionel Messi making a surprise return to the pitch, the Herons suffered an early exit from the competition following one of the most grueling opening-stage finishes in recent history. On Wednesday, Miami hosted Club Leon needing a decisive win to climb into the top four of the standings, holding just three points following a 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis and a tight 2-1 loss to CF Monterrey. Ultimately, the Mexican side proved superior at Nu Stadium, handing the Herons a devastating home defeat to end their campaign. Miami drew first blood when 19-year-old Daniel Pinter netted the opening goal in the 42nd minute. Club Leon pulled level through Daniel Arcila in the 50th minute, but Yannick Bright restored the host side’s lead just three minutes later. However, the visitors completed an impressive second-half comeback, as Juan Dominguez leveled in the 61st minute before Arcila completed his brace in the 83rd minute to seal a 3-2 victory. The primary highlight of the night for Inter Miami was the unexpected return of Messi following his brief leave of absence. Included among the substitutes, the Argentine superstar entered the match at halftime in place of Pinter, drawing a thunderous standing ovation from the crowd at Nu Stadium. We missed you, Messi. Welcome back. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/WE83EqfBx4— Major League Soccer (@MLS) August 13, 2026 Having missed the previous fixture against Monterrey following the passing of his father, during which he traveled to Argentina, Messi completed a rapid turnaround back to Florida after spending private time with his family. Arriving in Miami on Wednesday morning, the team captain shocked fans by appearing on the official matchday roster before taking the field. Despite playing only the second 45 minutes, Messi immediately impacted the match’s tempo against Club Leon. While unable to find the back of the net or record an assist, the forward created consistent danger, firing five shots (three on target), completing two successful dribbles, and delivering four key passes to advance the attack. Worst Leagues Cup campaign for Inter Miami in Messi era Since Messi arrived at Inter Miami in July 2023, the Leagues Cup had served as a primary stage for the club’s domestic dominance. During their inaugural tournament run in 2023, the team swept through the bracket to lift the trophy, fueled by an extraordinary performance from Messi, who tallied 10 goals in seven matches. In the 2024 edition, the Herons were unable to defend their crown, falling in the Round of 16 against the Columbus Crew during a tournament Messi missed entirely while recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the 2024 Copa America final. In 2025, despite managing lingering injuries to feature in four matches (two goals, two assists), Messi helped lead the Herons back to the final before falling 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders. The 2026 campaign produced a far different outcome. Following an opening 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis and back-to-back losses to Monterrey and Club Leon, Inter Miami were officially eliminated in the opening phase. Finishing 15th in the tournament standings with three points, seven goals scored, and seven conceded, the exit marks the worst Leagues Cup campaign in franchise history.
Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Crystal Palace have all made an approach to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco (Getty) Chelsea have joined the race with Liverpool and Manchester United to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, according to reports in France. Camara has spent two seasons with Monaco after joining in a £12.8 million deal from Metz two years ago. The 22-year-old has also made 49 appearances for Senegal and played in four games at the World Cup this summer. This week, Crystal Palace have seen their offer in excess of £35m for Camara rejected by Monaco, who are trying to keep the defensive midfielder for at least another season. The report claims that Monaco are holding out for a €50m (£42.7m) transfer fee for the Senegal international. Lamine Camara made four appearances for Senegal at the World Cup this summer (Getty) Monaco are also in a strong negotiating position as Camara still has three years remaining on his contract with the Ligue 1 side. Speaking after his side’s 3-2 win against Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday, Monaco head coach Filipe Luis made it clear that he wants Camara to stay at the club. ‘We want to build a truly competitive team. I’m very selfish and I want to keep all the players. I don’t want anyone to leave,’ Luis said. ‘But I know that clubs have to make sales, which we have done. I hope we can keep him. He’s probably one of the best midfielders in the world. ‘I don’t want to say too much, because I know that many clubs are interested in him. We all want him to stay. He’s really important to me. He’s very gifted with the ball at his feet, he covers a lot of ground. He’s an exceptional player. I’m really pleased with him. ‘I have every hope that he stays. I think he’s happy in Monaco.
