Real Madrid have revived their interest in Martin Zubimendi, with Arsenal facing a potentially significant decision over the Spain international before the summer transfer window closes. Frank Lampard’s Coventry will play in the Premier League for the first time since 2001 (Photo: Getty) A former Manchester United star is reportedly keen on returning to the Premier League amid interest from Frank Lampard’s Coventry City. After cruising to the Championship title, Coventry are preparing to play in the Premier League for the first time since in 2001, kicking-off the new season against champions Arsenal on August 21. And Lampard has splashed the case this summer transfer window, spending £86million on five players, including highly-rated English goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton. More signings will be needed to give the Sky Blues the best possible chance of avoiding relegation and, according to L’Equipe, they have made enquiries about Marseille’s Angel Gomes. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. The midfielder came through United’s academy but failed to break into the first-team before joining Lille, where he quietly impressed, leading to Lee Carsley giving him his England debut in 2024. Gomes only signed for Marseille last summer before spending the second-half of the season on loan at Wolves, though he was unable to stop their relegation. It is said that the 25-year-old wants another chance to prove himself in his homeland and while Marseille do not wish to sell him, they will not stand in his way if a suitable deal can be agreed. Angel Gomes joined Marseille on a free only last summer (Photo: Getty) Due to their financial situation, the French club need to sell this summer, and as one of their top earners, Gomes, who is under contract until 2028, is a top candidate to leave. Additionally, Sky Sports report that Marseille striker Neal Maupay, formerly of Brentford, Everton and Brighton, and defender Leonardo Balerdi, are also of interest to several Premier League clubs. Newcastle United were on course to sign Gomes’ current midfield partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to replace captain Brumo Guimaraes, who recently completed a £75m switch to Arsenal. Gomes made just 10 senior appearances for boyhood club Man Utd (Photo: Getty) However, it was reported on Monday that the former Tottenham star has declined the chance to return to England, in yet another transfer blow for the Magpies. In other news, rumours from Italy suggest Lampard is preparing an ambitious bid to reunite with former Chelsea and England centre-back Fikayo Tomori, whose future at AC Milan is unclear. In a mailbag edition of his newsletter, Jonathan Wilson answers questions about Michael Carrick, VAR and the Premier League’s new teamsSign up for our free newsletter hereManchester United finally seem to have something that resembles stability in the dressing room under Michael Carrick. I feel with quality signings in defence and midfield, they could mount a decent challenge for the Premier League next season. How do you feel they will fare? – Sterling. There’s an odd sense that Michael Carrick’s level of achievement last season was at precisely the most awkward level for the board. United didn’t produce indisputably brilliant football under him but equally 12 wins and three draws in 17 games was good enough that they pretty much had to give him the job. But it’s one thing to turn out those kinds of results when the pressure’s off, you’re already out of both cup competitions and you don’t have any European football; it’s quite another to do it in the heat of a full season. United don’t have to have an especially amazing season to play 15 more games this season than they did in 2025-26.This is an extract from Soccer Desk, a newsletter from the Guardian US. Jayden Bogle doesn’t expect a calm affair when Leeds play Manchester United (Picture: Getty Images) Manchester United face Leeds at Croke Park on Wednesday and the Red Devils have been told that it will not be the friendliest friendly. The rivalry between the two clubs goes back decades and has been one of the most heated in English football. On the field it has been one-sided in Manchester United’s favour for a long time, but Leeds did pick up a memorable win at Old Trafford last season. After a 1-1 draw at Elland Road in January, Leeds won the reverse fixture 2-1 in April, with Noah Okafor scoring both goals for the Yorkshire side. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. Jayden Bogle started in that victory for Leeds and he is looking forward to a very competitive pre-season contest in Dublin this week. Asked if anyone can truly call this fixture a friendly, he told LUTV: ‘No, you can’t. ‘Even though it is pre-season, it is not going to be a friendly. We will recover now and then prepare for that one next.’ Leeds have won friendlies this summer against RB Leipzig, Liverpool and Sunderland (Picture: Getty Images) Red Devils boss Michael Carrick was not looking to spice things up so much, just saying he is looking forward to a trip to Ireland. It has been a typically globe-trotting pre-season for United, having played inHelsinki, Trondheim, Solna and Goteborg already this summer and with fixtures in Ireland and Wroclaw in Poland, against AC Milan, to come. ‘I’m looking forward to it,’ Carrick said of the Ireland trip. ‘It’s been, a little bit, different chapters through pre-season and we’ll get everybody together, when we get to Dublin over the next couple of days. ‘It’ll be great, two more games this week and, again, I’m looking forward to seeing the group develop.’ Man Utd drew with PSG on Saturday (Picture: Getty Images) The Red Devils’ last two friendlies have been encouraging, with a win over Atletico Madrid and a 1-1 draw against European champions PSG. Marcus Rashford has joined up with the rest of the Manchester United squad in Ireland, as his reintegration at the club continues. The England winger has been handed a new squad number – 14 – and could feature against Leeds on Wednesday. Marcus Rashford is back after a season on loan at Barcelona (Picture: Getty Images) Michael Carrick has already confirmed that Rashford will be part of the squad for their final two pre-season friendlies, saying: ‘We have a full squad next week in Dublin. ‘We fly straight there and meet Leeds on Wednesday. We have a few days in Dublin where we have the whole squad, including Marcus, Kobbie [Mainoo] and Lisandro [Martinez]. ‘I’ve played with him [Rashford]. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
Arsenal were ‘used’ by Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior, says John Obi Mikel (Picture: The Obi One Podcast) Chelsea hero John Obi Mikel has trolled Arsenal supporters after the club missed out on signing Vinicius Junior, asking the fanbase ‘what they were smoking’ to convince them a deal was possible. Vinicius emerged as a surprise transfer target for Arsenal on the back of the club’s title triumph last season, with Mikel Arteta said to be ‘absolutely smitten’ with the idea of capturing the Brazilian. A proposed move had been approved ‘at all levels’ at the Emirates and the Gunners were reportedly ready to make the 26-year-old the highest-paid player in Premier League history. But Vinicius would go on to commit his future to Real Madrid, putting pen to paper on a six-year contract extension at the Bernabeu, forcing the English champions to consider alternatives elsewhere. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. It’s understood PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz remain on Arsenal’s radar with three weeks remaining of the transfer window, but it would likely take an earth-shattering offer to coax either club into a deal before the deadline. Prior to Vinicius signing his extension, Obi Mikel told Arsenal fans to ‘forget’ about the 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up, insisting the attacker was simply ‘using’ the Gunners to get a better deal. And in the latest episode of The Obi One Podcast, the former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder couldn’t resist reminding supporters of his previous remarks. Vinicius ignored interest from Arsenal to sign a new six-year deal in Madrid (Picture: Getty) Arsenal had reportedly been prepared to make Vinicius the highest-paid player in Premier League history (Picture: Getty) Asked if signing a new deal had perhaps been Vinicius’ plan all along, Obi Mikel replied: ‘Of course, mate. F***inghell. I don’t know what the Arsenal fans were expecting. ‘You win the league after 22 years and then you all of a sudden think: that’s it, you’ve arrived, you’re one of the big boys again. No, you’re not. ‘They’ve just been humbled because I said it: there’s no way Vinicius Junior is leaving Real Madrid to go to Arsenal, a club that’s won one title in 22 years. ‘This guy wins titles, he’s won lots of titles at Real Madrid. Niko Kovac masterminded Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 win over Arsenal (Credits: Sportimage) Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac offered one struggling Arsenal star a surprising vote of confidence following Sunday’s 3-2 win. Mikel Arteta’s side slumped to a second consecutive pre-season defeat, this time in front of their own fans at Emirates Stadium. Although he got on the scoresheet with a second half penalty, it was another disappointing afternoon for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sweden international looked well off the pace against Real Betis last week in his first outing since his World Cup exploits against Sweden and was again the focus of much criticism in the aftermath of yesterday’s reversal. Despite another poor showing, Kovac singled out the former Sporting Lisbon star for surprise praise when asked if any Arsenal players caught his eye. He said: ‘There are a lot of top players when you see Gyokeres he is strong, he is quick, he is fast he is very direct. ‘We know him very well but I can mention all the players.’ Viktor Gyokeres struggled in Arsenal’s defeat against Borussia Dortmund (Credits: Alamy Live News.) Arteta, meanwhile, has backed ‘warrior’ Bruno Guimaraes to ‘ignite something different’ in the Premier League champions. Brazil midfielder Guimaraes was introduced to Gunners fans ahead of Sunday’s 3-2 defeat after completing his £75million move from Newcastle. The 28-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal, bolsters a star-studded midfield which already boasts the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze. Bruno Guimaraes was unveiled ahead of the game against Dortmund (Credits: Alamy Live News.) ‘You can see the immediate reaction,” Arteta told the club website after Guimaraes was given a warm reception by supporters. ‘I think he describes himself as a warrior. I think he’s a warrior with a tremendous quality as well and intuition and leadership and charisma that is going to help us, that is going to really ignite something different in the team. ‘I think he’s going to push everybody inside the team as well and that’s the type of player that we need.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his Arsenal squad further (Picture: Getty) Arsenal have been backed to hijack Liverpool’s move for PSG winger Bradley Barcola after completing a £75m deal for Bruno Guimaraes. Brazilian midfielder Guimaraes was unveiled to Arsenal fans at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday following his move from Newcastle United. Guimaraes became Mikel Arteta’s third signing of the summer following Greek winger Christos Tzolis and French goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Arsenal were also hoping to welcome Vinicius Junior to north London in one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history but the Brazil icon ended up signing a new contract with Real Madrid. Arteta remains interested in signing another winger, however, and have been linked with Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford since missing out on Vinicius. PSG and France forward Barcola is another possible transfer option and former Arsenal striker Perry Groves has given the Gunners real hope of beating Liverpool to a stunning deal. Liverpool have identified Barcola, 23, as their top target this summer and are reportedly ready to pay £100m for the Frenchman, although PSG are holding out for an offer closer to £150m. PSG and France superstar Bradley Barcola (Picture: Getty) Barcola, who has won two Champions League titles at PSG, is expected to leave the Ligue 1 champions after stalling over signing a new contract. Liverpool were thought to be leading the race to secure Barcola’s signature but Groves says he has been told that the winger would rather move to London. Asked whether Barcola would be better suited to Arsenal or Liverpool, Groves told talkSPORT: ‘I’ve got no dog in the fight, but I would say the Gooners because Liverpool are a team that are in transition. New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola (Picture: Getty) ‘Andoni Iraola going in there, imposing his own philosophy, his own style with all the new signings coming in. ‘If you were Barcola and you thought, what out of those two sides have got the most chance of winning the Premier League or Champions League, at the moment you’d say it was Arsenal. ‘So it’s whether Arsenal want to go in, if they go in for him, then there would have been advances being made to his people. https://www.instagram.com/p/Db0h7JeEszv/ ‘Because they don’t want to be seen losing out on Vinicius Junior being played like a little kitten with a ball of wool, but Arsenal have to be in for those sorts of players. That’s the level Arsenal are at now.’ Groves, who won two league titles at Arsenal, added: ‘I’ve got a source that says he [Barcola] wants to live in London. ‘I can’t tell you (who), I can’t divulge my sources. I’ve got a source. I’ve got a mole. Barcola wants to live in London.’ Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong wants Arteta to turn his attentions to Barcola after wrapping up a deal for Guimaraes. Arsenal tried to sign Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid (Picture: Getty) ‘Mikel [Arteta] and the boys have finally got it over the line, which I’m very happy about,’ he told Ladbrokes. ‘But they shouldn’t just win it once and be satisfied with that. ‘They have to keep on winning it now and dominate just like how Man United and Man City have in the past. ‘We’ve got the players, we’ve got a deep squad and hopefully this summer, the board are going to strengthen further, because I still think we need a couple of wingers and a proper number eight. ‘I feel like Declan Rice is playing in a position which isn’t natural to him, so we need a proper number eight alongside him. ‘For me, when it comes to realistic signings this summer, with those positions in mind, I feel like Bruno Guimaraes is someone I’d love to see at Arsenal. ‘And also Bradley Barcola… I think he would be very good for Arsenal. Michael Carrick during Manchester United’s pre-season camp (Picture: Getty) Manchester United have been told they have already secured one of the signings of the summer ahead of the new Premier League season. Michael Carrick has welcomed Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Karl Darlow to his first-team squad at Old Trafford this summer. Tynan Thompson, Kit Margetson and Cristian Orozco have also arrived at Manchester United but will join the club’s academy. The Red Devils raided another Premier League rival in Aston Villa to sign Belgium international Tielemans for £35m. Hundreds of millions has already been spent on midfield reinforcements this summer, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes all sealing lucrative moves. John Obi Mikel rates Manchester United’s deal for Tielemans as the pick of the bunch, however, describing the signing as a ‘f****** steal’. Man Utd summer signing Youri Tielemans (Picture: Getty) ‘For me, it’s Youri Tielemans,’ the Chelsea legend said on The Obi One podcast when asked for his take on the most impressive midfield signing of the summer. ‘Honestly, how the f*** did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a f****** steal. I watched him before and during the World Cup, and you can see that this is a player. ‘Obviously, we all know how Tielemans plays, he can play as a six, an eight or a ten and when you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy. Tielemans during Man Utd pre-season (Picture: Getty) ‘He scores goals, he’s dangerous from set pieces, he’s brilliant on the ball, and he rarely gives it away. The only thing people can say is that he’s not the quickest, but he reads the game so well. ‘He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this summer], the best one is Tielemans.’ Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has also praised Manchester United’s move for Tielemans. https://www.instagram.com/p/Dbdvh2TAoys/?hl=en ‘The problem with modern football is that sometimes we look too much at stats like assists and goals,’ he told Hajper. ‘Of course, Youri Tielemans creates assists and scores goals, and can shoot from outside the box and score free kicks, but he is so much more than that. ‘Tielemans is a link up player, and you have to watch him to understand why he is so important to his teams, not just look at his stats, because he is always trying to play the ball forward. Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel (Picture: Getty) ‘You have some midfield players who have a pass success rate of 98% but they are always playing the ball backwards. Tielemans is a guy who turns, opens up and plays the ball between the lines, and that’s very important for a club like Manchester United who need to break other teams down. ‘Even when he’s playing in a deep role, he’s playing it in an attacking way. He’s thinking about going forwards, always. ‘Sometimes he will lose the ball but that’s what happens when you take some risks in games to make things happen, and I think that’s something United need, and he has the mentality to be brave and positive under the big pressure of the shirt. ‘He will put in ultra big effort and say to his team mates, give me the ball and let me change the game for you. He will take the responsibility to take Manchester United forward.’ Carrick is still interested in bringing a third new midfielder to Old Trafford this summer before the transfer window shuts. The Brazil international is available for transfer this summer, having falling down the pecking order behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners want £20m for the striker, who has just one year left on his contract, while they are only interested in a permanent exit rather than a loan deal. There is no shortage of interest in the 29-year-old, with Napoli pursuing a deal for his signature, but Besiktas are trying their luck as well. Gabriel Jesus looks likely to be leaving Arsenal this summer (Picture: Getty Images) Jesus arrived at Arsenal from Manchester City in the summer of 2022 in a £45m deal but has seen much of his time at the club hampered by injury. He has performed in fits and starts, but has played just 123 times in four seasons, scoring 32 goals. He remains in first team contention and has featured in pre-season, but an exit is looking increasingly likely this summer. There is also interest from Turkey in another Arsenal star, with Galatasaray reportedly keen on Gabriel Martinelli. Gabriel Martinelli has been at Arsenal since 2019 (Picture: Getty Images) TalkSPORT report that Galatasaray have made an initial inquiry for the Brazilian winger and talks have been held over a fee. The 25-year-old featured regularly last season, making 53 appearances across all competitions and scoring 11 goals. He has one year left on his current contract, although Arsenal do have an option to extend that by another 12 months. Martinelli would only be allowed to leave if the Gunners bring in a new signing on the left wing, as they are already a bit short there after the departure of Trossard. The pursuit of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr was unsuccessful and Arsenal are now thought to be looking at the likes of Kenan Yildiz at Juventus and Eli Kroupi Jr at Bournemouth. They are also interested in Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, as are Barcelona. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

The Hammers were relegated from the top flight last season but have stuck with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, after finishing the campaign on 39 points. There have been some significant departures, with Mateus Fernandes going to Spurs for £85 million, Crysencio Summerville heading to Al Hilal for £55m and Freddie Potts joining Club Brugge in a £10.2m deal. Experienced defender Joel Veltman has arrived from Brighton on a free transfer, while Venezuela international loan signing Keiber Lamadrid has made his move permanent. Espirito Santo will need more numbers, though, and West Ham are making moves for Troy Parrott and Reiss Nelson. Troy Parrott has been a big hit at AZ (Picture: Getty Images) He has been linked with a string of European clubs this summer, including Porto, but West Ham are hopeful of securing a deal and have made a bid of around £15m, according to the Daily Mail. The 24-year-old has hinted that he is in no rush to return to England, having enjoyed his time with AZ so far. ‘Before I went to the Netherlands, I was completely focused on England,’ he told De Telegraaf. ‘I dreamed of the Premier League. ‘But once in the Netherlands, I discovered that the football world is a lot bigger than England.’ Reiss Nelson has featured for Arsenal in pre-season (Picture: Getty Images) Nelson is also on the Hammers’ radar as he appears to be surplus to requirements at Arsenal. The 26-year-old came through the Gunners academy and has made 90 first team appearances, but has played just once for Arsenal in the last two seasons. He spent the majority of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Fulham and last season on loan at Brentford. The winger is back at his parent club and has featured in pre-season, but is unlikely to get much chance to shine in the first team in the coming campaign. West Ham are reportedly exploring a deal, but Fulham and Benfica are also credited with interest. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

Roma has revived its interest in Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli, with the Premier League club reportedly prepared to discuss a sale for between €40 million and €45 million.
He wants to win titles season after season, the Champions League, La Liga, competing year after year and winning those titles. {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Martin Odegaard heads ball directly into police officer during Arsenal parade","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/06\/01\/188721103218914644\/480x270_MP4_188721103218914644.mp4","description":"Whoops!","duration":"T8S","height":480,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/06\/01\/12\/109008017-0-image-a-36_1780314932393.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-06-01T12:52:23+0100","width":270} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); ‘He’s tasted what it feels like winning the Champions League, Arsenal have never won the Champions League. Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris says recruitment this summer preparing for a Europa League campaign is "much harder" than it was before last season's Premier League return. Defender Thomas Meunier is the only player to arrive on a permanent deal to the Black Cats so far this window, on a free transfer after his departure from Lille. The transfer window is still unpredictable but we are working behind the scenes to strengthen the squad.

United made Brazilian midfielder Santos their first signing of the summer in a £48m move from big-spending Chelsea. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. United drew 1-1 with European champions PSG in a pre-season friendly on Saturday night. Manchester United have two more tun
Leandro Trossard was unveiled as a Besiktas player last month (Picture: Getty Images) Besiktas have approached Arsenal in an attempt to make another big signing from the Premier League champions, having already landed Leandro Trossard this summer. The Belgian has made the switch to the Turkish Super Lig in a deal worth an initial £15.3million and another potential £1.7m in add-ons. The 31-year-old becomes one of the star names in the Besiktas squad but they are hoping to add another high profile star this summer. Turkish publication Fanatik report that Besiktas have approached Arsenal over a deal to sign striker Gabriel Jesus. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo is building a new team at West Ham (Picture: Getty Images) West Ham are are putting together their squad for the upcoming Championship season and are looking at some recognisable names. Callum Wilson also departed on a free transfer and gets another crack at the Premier League by joining Brentford. Former Tottenham striker Parrott has been excelling at AZ since moving there permanently in 2024, scoring 30 goals in 59 Eredivisie games and 51 in 97 appearances across all competitions.
