Arsenal are in talks to sign Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray (Photo: Getty) Martin Keown doesn’t believe Arsenal need to sign a new striker but says there is another ‘problem’ Mikel Arteta must address before the summer transfer window closes. Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, before kicking-off their Premier League title defence against Coventry City next Friday. Over £150million has already been spent this summer, most notably on Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, but the Gunners are still working on adding some more firepower to their squad before deadline day on September 1. After failed moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior, Arsenal are now in negotiations for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. The prolific Nigerian would surely be a welcome addition, with the jury still out on Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Jesus close to joining Napoli and Kai Havertz struggling with injuries. But Keown believes there is only one position that Arteta needs to strengthen in this window, and it’s not centre-forward. Asked by Hayers TV if Arteta needs to make more big signings to retain the Premier League title and finally win the Champions League, Keown bluntly replied: ‘No. Martin Keown says there is a potential problem with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad (Photo: Getty) ‘I wondered whether they might look again at a striker. But they obviously feel now Havertz has come through the pre-season… I think that’s really critical and he’s got that base for the season, so no. ‘I think Myles Lewis-Skelly is coming into midfield, so you’ve got competition there. [Martin] Zubimendi is now in a fight for his first-team place. So that looks good. ‘The defenders, you got [Riccardo] Calafiori, [Piero] Hincapie, there’s a lot of guys in there. William Saliba won’t start the season, but [Cristhian] Mosquera has been excellent in pre-season, he really looks sharp. ‘[Marli] Salmon is a youngster coming through. So, you don’t want to be blocking the pathway for these players, but only the manager will know what he wants next. You’ve always got to have players in mind. Jurrien Timber will miss the start of the new season through injury (Photo: Getty) ‘Right-back could be a problem if Jurrien Timber’s not going to be ready because obviously Ben White’s had a few injuries, but Mosquera again can go into that position. So, that might be something they’re looking at, to bring a right-back in.’ Timber was forced to pull out of the Netherlands squad for the World Cup because of a persistent groin problem and Arteta has confirmed he will miss the first few weeks of the season. White suffered four separate injuries last season, missing 13 games, and has been linked with a transfer away from north London. Keown will be pleased to know that signing another right-sided defender is on Arteta’s agenda, with reports on Friday emerging that talks have begun to sign Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen. Arsenal are interesting in signing England star Jarell Quansah (Photo: Getty) The England international is said to be open to moving to the Emirates just a year after he joined Leverkusen from boyhood club Liverpool for £30million. Naturally a centre-back, Quansah can play right-back too, doing so during England’s run to third-place at the 2026 World Cup. While some fans may be underwhelmed to see Arsenal signing more defenders than attackers, Keown doesn’t see it that way, adding: ‘They proved it [that they have a good defensive core] last year. ‘You might have looked at it and thought we had too many left-backs, but in the end we used all of them and [there were] multiple changes to the back-four. I’d like to see a bit more stability.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Com

Today’s fluff has sought shade As these glorious pages reported on Thursday, Galatasaray wanted Gabriel Martinelli. In the following 24 hours things changed a bit, creating greater complexity, something we do not approve of. Arsenal have supposedly been offered the chance to involve the Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen in exchange for the Brazilian, which could be temptong for a side looking for a new No 9. To further sweeten any potential, Ethan Nwaneri could be chucked into it too to make it a mega swap.Tijjani Reijnders may struggle to find a perfect role within Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City. The Dutchman has already been linked with Nottingham Forest, which has stirred some interest in Saudi Arabia from Al Qadsiah, who are managed by Brendan Rodgers and are willing to cough up £51m for the midfielder. Carrick confident over more new signings (Picture: Niall Carson/PA Wire) Manchester United have enquired into a move for Liverpool transfer target Ibrahim Mbaye. Liverpool have explored a move for the Paris Saint-Germain youngster this summer as they seek to strengthen their wide options ahead of the start of the new season following Mohamed Salah’s exit. Mbaye, 18, made his debut for the French champions in August 2024 aged just 16 but with some of European football’s best attacking players ahead of him in the pecking order at Parc de Princes, the right winger is considering his options this summer. Liverpool are also interested in signing another PSG star in Bradley Barcola with the France international believed to be their top target. Signing both players could set them back as much as €200million (£171m) while reports this week have suggested Andoni Iraola’s side deem PSG’s €50m (£42m) asking price for Mbaye to be too expensive. While Liverpool’s interest may be cooling, there is no shortage of other suitors. A string of European clubs have approached PSG over a move including Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa and Roma with AS also naming United among the sides to have reached out. Mbaye is on the radar of a host of clubs (Picture: UEFA via Getty Images) United were keen to strengthen their wide options this summer but with Marcus Rashford now looking set to stay at Old Trafford, improving other positions is a more pressing matter. United have signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to strengthen their midfield but Michael Carrick is keen on one more option in the middle of the park. Another left-back is also being sought with Carrick explaining this week the club are still pushing hard on all fronts. United have made two signings in midfield (Picture: Manchester United via Getty Images) ‘We’ve improved the group. We’ve improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in,’ Carrick said. ‘So the players that we’ve brought in, I think we’ve done really good business and we’ve got some top, top, top players. So we’re delighted with that. We always want to improve. ‘We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We’re conscious of that and we’ve got to keep pushing.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
