With his penalty against Nashville SC, Lionel Messi has reached three consecutive misses from the 12 yards between Argentina and Inter Miami, tying the worst record in his career. Lionel Messi‘s return to Major League Soccer action was far from a dream night, as he failed to convert a penalty during Inter Miami‘s humbling 4-1 loss to Nashville SC on Saturday. The failed attempt marks his third consecutive missed penalty across competitions for club and with the Argentina national team, matching the longest spot-kick drought of his career. After Andy Najar put Nashville ahead in the 17th minute off an accurate cross from Elias Saad, Inter Miami pressed aggressively for an immediate equalizer. Following a lofted pass over the defense from Casemiro, Luis Suarez controlled the ball, cut back onto his left foot, and was brought down in the box by Jeisson Palacios after a mistimed tackle in the 22nd minute. Messi stepped up to the spot, using a stutter-step approach to try and freeze Brian Schwake. Though the goalkeeper committed early and dived to his right, Schwake managed to stick out his legs and make the save. Sergio Reguilon pounced on the rebound and slotted it into the back of the net, but the goal was quickly disallowed due to encroaching into the penalty area. Failing to convert from the spot against Nashville extends Messi’s current slide to three straight misses from 12 yards out. Saturday’s failure was also his second missed penalty in an Inter Miami shirt, with the first occurring back in September 2025 during a 3-0 regular-season defeat against Charlotte FC. Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami CF takes a misses the penalty against Nashville SC. (Carly Mackler/Getty Images) The penalty miss against Nashville highlights a rare dip in execution for the Argentine legend when facing opposing goalkeepers from the spot. During the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, he dragged a penalty wide in a group-stage match against Austria, and had another attempt saved by Mostafa Shobeir in a round of 16 clash against Egypt, bringing his total to three straight failures. Despite the recent slump, Messi remains one of the premier dead-ball technicians in modern soccer history. Across 149 career penalty attempts for club and country, the forward has converted 114 times while missing 35, maintaining a respectable 76.5% conversion rate. When did Messi last miss three consecutive penalties? As the captain and primary penalty taker for both Inter Miami and Argentina, Messi naturally carries the responsibility whenever a spot kick is awarded. While this three-match slump is an unusual sight, it is not the first time he has endured a cold stretch from the spot. The only other time Lionel Messi missed three consecutive penalties was back in 2014 while playing for FC Barcelona and Argentina. That run began in an April 2014 match against Real Betis, where Antonio Adan saved a late attempt in the 86th minute. His next miss came that September in a 5-0 win over Levante UD when he fired completely wide, followed by an October friendly with Argentina where Brazil goalkeeper Jefferson stopped his 40th-minute effort. Messi ultimately snapped that 2014 drought in November during an international friendly against Croatia at Boleyn Ground, converting from the spot to secure a 2-1 victory. Inter Miami return to action next Wednesday against the Philadelphia Union, where Messi will look to end his current drought or risk setting an unprecedented personal low.

SIMON JONES: Negotiations are in the early stages but it is understood to be a considerable offer from one of Brazil's biggest clubs who have just come out of a transfer embargo.
Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri watched on from a distance as Arsenal celebrated the win (Picture: X) Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri were seen awkwardly watching on as the rest of Arsenal’s squad celebrated winning the Community Shield – leaving many fans convinced that their days at the club are numbered. There was some surprise as the two attackers were left out of Arsenal’s clash against Manchester City, with the duo failing to even make the substitutes bench in Cardiff. The two managers were only permitted to name nine players in addition to their starting XIs at the Principality Stadium – a rule that a ‘saddened’ Mikel Arteta hopes is changed. ‘Really sad to not have their availability,’ the Arsenal head coach told TNT Sports ahead of kick-off. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. ‘I have been fighting with the Premier League to extend them and to accommodate more players in the squad. ‘They deserve to be in the squad. Hopefully we can change that rule.’ The Gunners coped perfectly well without Martinelli and Nwaneri on the day, with Riccardo Calafiori firing the English champions in front after only 23 seconds. Arsenal cruised past City to win the Community Shield for an 18th time (Picture: Getty) Calafiori scored after only 23 seconds in Cardiff (Picture: Getty) Kai Havertz and club captain Martin Odegaard struck either side of half-time to further increase the deficit against a lacklustre City, led by Enzo Maresca for the first time in an official capacity. The result saw the Gunners claim the Community Shield for an 18th time in their history – just three short of Manchester United’s record total of 21 victories. There were jubilant scenes as Arteta’s players gathered around Odegaard on the podium to hold the prize aloft shortly after the final whistle. Martinelli faces an uncertain future at the Emirates (Picture: Getty) However, a video has been circulating amongst Arsenal supporters which shows both Martinelli and Nwaneri standing some distance away from the rest of their team-mates – until Gabriel Magalhaes eventually persuaded them to join in the fun. ‘Bro [three crying emojis] separately, Nwaneri and Martinelli are GONE. Them man were borderline refusing to go over for the celebrations until Big Gabi called them over,’ one Arsenal fan wrote on X. A second bluntly wrote: ‘Just get them gone man, £80m right there and a new attacking signing.’ Bro 😭😭😭 separately, Nwaneri and Martinelli are GONE. Hale End product Nwaneri has been linked with Serie A giants AC Milan, meanwhile, and Arteta has refused to rule out a move for the youngster, once touted as a potential superstar in north London. ‘I want him to be at the club,’ Arteta said of Nwaneri, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Marseille. ‘But we have to think about the medium and long term,’ Arteta said. ‘What is best for the player? Ethan needs to play football. If he stays here, we must be able to guarantee him those minutes, otherwise it won’t be beneficial for either side.’ Martinelli has entered into the final 12
Arsenal are out to win everything this season, says club captain Martin Odegaard (Picture: Getty) Martin Odegaard sent a stark warning to Arsenal’s rivals following the side’s statement Community Shield victory over Manchester City, claiming he ‘wants to win everything’ over the coming season. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Odegaard ensured the English champions picked up the first piece of silverware on offer this term, with City offering very little by way of response at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Summer signing Christos Tzolis shone in the Welsh capital, assisting Havertz and Odegaard either side of half-time after Calafiori had opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the contest. Bruno Guimaraes was also handed his debut following a high-profile £75million summer move from Newcastle and looked comfortable in the middle of the park alongside the impressive Myles-Lewis Skelly. Mikel Arteta’s men will no doubt be looking to carry their barnstorming form into the opening match of their Premier League title defence when they play host to newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates on Friday. Enzo Maresca, meanwhile, will be under pressure to oversee immediate improvements on the back of a lacklustre and disjointed performance from City, who kick off their top-flight campaign at home to Bournemouth in a week’s time. ‘We played some brilliant football, we showed our level,’ Arsenal captain Odegaard said shortly after the final whistle. When you get a taste of how nice it is, you want to do it again. ‘We want to win everything.’ Arteta’s men start the new Premier League season against Coventry City on Friday (Picture: Getty) Facing the media after the Gunners’ triumph, Arteta reserved special praise for new boy Tzolis, highlighting the winger’s ‘intelligence’ and ‘quality’ in the final third. ‘He’s come into the team and really organically he’s fitted in,’ the Arsenal head coach told reporters. ‘He’s a really intelligent boy, and he has a massive quality, which is that in the last 30 metres, he is so composed to pick people out in and around the box or to finish. ‘He has shown that two or three times, and he was decisive.’ Guimaraes made his Arsenal debut in Wales (Picture: Getty) Asked if there was room for improvement in Tzolis’ game, the Spaniard added: ‘With more quality around him, the numbers will be higher. It is not a coincidence. ‘He is a really consistent player in everything he does and, yes, I’m really impressed with him.’ Arsenal have now lifted the Community Shield on 18 occasions in their history – just three short of Manchester United’s total, who hold the record with 21 victories. Arteta has steered the north Londoners to three of these wins as a manager, lifting the prize in 2020 and 2023 prior to the team’s latest triumph. He also won the Community Shield twice as a player, first in 2014 and then again 12 months later. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta (Picture: Getty) Arsenal are planning to offload Ethan Nwaneri before the summer transfer window closes after he was left out of the Community Shield against Manchester City. Nwaneri has been linked with another move away from Arsenal this summer after spending the second-half of last season on loan at Marseille. The 19-year-old is one of the most highly-rated players in Europe despite a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. The midfielder became the youngest player to ever feature in the Premier League when he made his debut for Arsenal in 2022, and established himself as a regular member of Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad during the 2024-25 season. Get the latest transfer news every morning Sign up to our daily football newsletter for personalised updates on who your team is trying to sign and who won't be around next season. Nwaneri made 37 appearances for his boyhood club that term and was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award while being rewarded with a new long-term contract. The 19-year-old was expected to continue to contribute last season but only featured in six league games before being sent on loan to Marseille in January. Arsenal bosses were confident he would develop in France but Nwaneri only made nine appearances during an underwhelming loan before returning to the Premier League champions. Ethan Nwaneri looks set to leave Arsenal (Picture: Getty) Despite failing to make an impact for Marseille, Arteta insisted Nwaneri would benefit from his time away from Arsenal and returned ‘looking like a different man’. ‘On the pitch, he didn’t [work] because a lot happened in Marseille,’ Arteta said after Arsenal beat Girona 4-1 in their first pre-season friendly. ‘But when you just stand in front of him, you sense the maturity and he looks like a different man. Arteta ahead of Arsenal’s Community Shield clash (Picture: Getty) ‘The experience on paper, it wasn’t ideal but I think he went through something that is going to help him a lot in his career.’ Speaking on Friday before the Community Shield, Arteta admitted Nwaneri could still leave Arsenal before the transfer deadline. ‘I want him to be at the club. But we have to think about the medium and long term,’ Arteta said. Nwaneri was left out of the Community Shield (Picture: Getty) ‘What is best for the player? Ethan needs to play football. If he stays here, we must be able to guarantee him those minutes, otherwise it won’t be beneficial for either side.’ Nwaneri has attracted interest from Galatasaray, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in recent weeks and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Arsenal plan to offload him after he was left out of the Community Shield. It is not clear whether Arsenal will sanction another loan move for the teenager or sell him in a possible deal with a buy-back option. While Nwaneri was left out of the Premier League curtain-raiser in Cardiff, summer signings Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis were both handed their Arsenal debuts by Arteta. ‘Christos [Tzolis] came early so that always helps,’ Arteta said. ‘Bruno [Guimaraes] only joined us last week, but he’s in good condition and we know what he will bring to the team. ‘He is a ball of energy. He has an unbelievable desire to win every ball. You sense he will drive the dressing room and when you bring someone with that competitive nature, it will only drive the boys.’ Asked about Arsenal’s plan to retain the Premier League trophy, Arteta added: ‘It’s very difficult, that’s why we haven’t done it in this football club. You have to raise the level from every angle.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
