Manchester City are keen on acquiring Enzo Fernandez, and Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has clarified his perspective on the Argentine midfielder's future. Chelsea recently appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager, and the Spanish coach has now directly addressed rumors linking Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City with a firm statement. The 2026–27 Premier League season is about to kick off, with Chelsea launching their campaign on Monday, August 24, against Fulham. For this match, Alonso expects to have Fernandez fully available. “Enzo is a Chelsea player. He’s a top, top player,” Alonso stated. “He’s training really well, very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.” A move to Manchester City may be the best option for Fernandez During Chelsea’s pre-season fixtures—including a friendly against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge—some supporters booed Fernandez. The reaction stemmed from frustration regarding his celebrations following Argentina’s victory over England in the 2026 World Cup. Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea. Subsequent rumors linking him with a departure to Manchester City have further exacerbated tension among fans. Under these circumstances, a transition to the Etihad Stadium could offer a fresh start for his career. City manager Enzo Maresca reportedly views Fernandez as a primary target to reinforce his midfield. Should the Argentine complete a marquee move to Manchester, City supporters would likely view him favorably based on his technical quality, provided he meets expectations and delivers immediate performances.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson (Picture: Sky Sports) Paul Merson believes neither Manchester City nor Manchester United are capable of rivalling Arsenal in this season’s Premier League title race. Arsenal will begin their title defence on Friday against newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta’s side have added more depth this summer with the signings of Bruno Guimaraes, Christian Tzolis and Illan Meslier, with Ezri Konsa also expected to sign for the defending champions in the coming days. The Gunners have already laid down a marker with their comprehensive win over Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend. And Merson believes that his former side are ‘comfortable’ favourites heading into the new season. ‘I just can’t see anybody stopping Arsenal,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘They’ll win it quite comfortably. I don’t see a single weakness in them regarding the Premier League. ‘They do have a few weaknesses in the Champions League but for the Premier League, they remind me of when Manchester City first started dominating the league: two players in every position. Arsenal are the defending champions (Picture: Getty) ‘William Saliba and Gabriel are unbelievable but then Cristhian Mosquera comes in and you wouldn’t even think Saliba was missing. Jurrien Timber is out but Ben White comes in [against City] and keeps Jeremy Doku quiet. ‘I just don’t see anybody touching Arsenal at the moment. The only ones who can beat Arsenal are themselves.’ It has been a busy off-season for virtually all of Arsenal’s potential title rivals, with a slew of managerial changes ahead of the new season. Enzo Maresca is back at Manchester City, while Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso have been tasked with improving the fortunes of Liverpool and Chelsea after their respective poor domestic campaigns last season. Enzo Maresca has replaced Pep Guardiola (Picture: AFP) But Merson believes that City may find it hard to adapt to life without Pep Guardiola and midfield maestro Rodri following his departure to Barcelona. ‘After watching the Community Shield, I said the one thing Manchester City cannot do is sell Rodri,’ he added. ‘And they did it after the game. ‘I just don’t see them competing with Arsenal this season. ‘There were some positives for them in that game, but over 38 games, I just don’t see how Manchester City will be able to live with Arsenal.’ Manchester United are preparing for life back in the Champions League (Picture: PA) Paul Merson's predicted top-six for this season Arsenal Liverpool Chelsea Manchester City Tottenham Manchester United Similarly, Merson finds it hard to envisage a title challenge from United as they prepare for their first full season with Michael Carrick at the helm. No team picked up more points than United in the league following Carrick’s appointment in January, earning 39 points from his 17 games. But Merson fears that a lack of squad depth and the added pressures of Champions League football will take its toll, insisting: ‘I just worry about Manchester United with Europe. ‘We saw it last season at times – their squad is wafer thin. ‘If Bruno Fernandes got injured, then you’d really worry. And yes, they have Youri Tielemans in there but I don’t see a dominant midfield. ‘Manchester United will have their ups and downs – and I don’t expect them to be challengers. Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool at St James' Park (kick-off 16:30 BST). New signing Amar Dedic is "the perfect fit" - and his knowledge of Jaissle's playing style from their time together at Red Bull Salzburg helps. Dedic is ready to play on Sunday, but it comes too soon for Tino Livramento and Joelinton, whom Jaissle expects to be out for a couple of weeks.
EXCLUSIVE: The former Chelsea and England man has triggered outrage in East Yorkshire thanks to comments he made with former West Ham team-mate Carlton Cole.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso (Picture: Getty) Chelsea are in talks to sell Nicolas Jackson after Xabi Alonso placed the striker in a group of players who are training away from the first-team squad ahead of the new season. The Blues have more than 40 first-team players listed on their club website, meaning Alonso has been forced to split his squad as he prepares for Chelsea’s Premier League opener. Chelsea have insisted the group on the periphery should not be considered a ‘bomb squad’ but they certainly do not feature in Alonso’s long-team plans at Chelsea. Fellow striker Liam Delap and returning winger Mykhailo Mudryk are also in a second training group at Cobham. Chelsea signed Jackson in a £32m deal from Villarreal in 2023 and were encouraged by his first season at Stamford Bridge in which he scored 17 goals in all competitions. Jackson also hit double digits during the 2024-25 campaign but was then loaned out to Bayern Munich following the arrivals of Joao Pedro from Brighton and Delap from Ipswich Town. The Senegal international was hoping to earn a permanent move to Bayern but the necessary conditions were not met and the Bundesliga champions opted against making a new deal with Chelsea. Chelsea are open to offers for Nicolas Jackson (Picture: Getty) As a result Jackson returned to west London but Chelsea bosses immediately made it clear that they were open to offloading him once again. Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Tottenham have made approaches for the 25-year-old but Chelsea are currently discussing a deal with Napoli, according to Sky Italia. Napoli are keen to strengthen Massimiliano Allegri’s attacking options ahead of the new season and also admire Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee. But their focus for the time being appears to be on Jackson, with reports in Italy claiming talks have began over a deal for the Chelsea man. Liam Delap is also training away from the Chelsea first-team (Picture: Getty) Villa have expressed interest in Jackson amid speculation England striker Ollie Watkins could leave the Midlands club for a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. With Chelsea open to selling Jackson for a fee of around £65m, Manchester United have even been advised to consider a move late in the summer window. ‘Nicolas Jackson is an option for Manchester United,’ Premier League title winner Quinton Fortune said earlier this month. ‘He’s coming off his loan at Bayern Munich and keeps getting clubs so he must have something. If you look at the purest of the pure footballers, he’s not a striker to bring it down and play it like Dimitar Berbatov or Wayne Rooney or Dwight Yorke but that’s what I like about him too. ‘He’s just an out-an-out striker. He doesn’t really care about anything else apart from getting into the box and getting on the end of whatever service he’s provided, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That’s still the hardest part of the game. ‘He’s almost like Erling Haaland at times and he shouldn’t get involved in the play so much. Tell the other guys they can do all the hard work and I’ll score the goals. ‘Whether he’s right for United, I don’t know about that, but you don’t play for Chelsea and Bayern Munich if you haven’t got something about you.’ Chelsea kick-start their 2026-27 campaign with a trip to west London rivals Fulham on Monday night. ‘We feel ready,’ Alonso said at his first Chelsea pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon. ‘We have prepared the whole pre-season with some players from the first day, other ones coming later. ‘But the de
Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2024-25 campaign prompted a massive summer of recruitment. In preparation for their first campaign in the top flight for eight years, the Black Cats signed 15 players - including Marc Guiu, who had to return to Chelsea within a few weeks of joining - and spent a record £160m. "Sunderland's successful recruitment drive in the summer of 2025 has been well documented," said BBC Radio Newcastle's Sunderland commentator Nick Barnes.
