The defender is set to become one of Australia’s most expensive players with a Premier League deal nearly done while some international teammates have already made movesLucas Herrington, fresh off becoming the youngest Australian to start a game at a men’s World Cup, is set to become the second-most expensive footballer in Australian history with a move to newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City. Latest reports suggest a fee of approximately £12.6m ($24.1m), with a further £4.4m ($8.4m) in add-ons, which comes in just shy of the Australian record of £15m plus £5m in add-ons ($38.3m in total) that Leicester paid Stoke City to sign Harry Souttar in 2023.It would set a new selling high-water mark for his current club, Colorado Rapids, and eclipses the decade-old record Hull set when they paid just over £10m for Ryan Mason. Given the trajectory of Herrington’s meteoric rise, it feels a pretty safe bet to assume the 18-year-old will claim Souttar’s record outright sooner rather than later. Continue reading...
Chelsea have been fined £10m and given a suspended ban from registering new players for two transfer windows for breaching rules relating to payments to agents between 2009 and 2022. Owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital self-reported 74 breaches of FA rules when they purchased the club in 2022. Chelsea admitted making £47m in secret payments to unregistered agents and third parties over transfers between 2011 and 2018.
Lukas Nmecha's first-half goal was enough for Leeds United to beat Sunderland in New Jersey and record their first win of pre-season. Nmecha caught Black Cats goalkeeper Melker Ellborg off guard with a low effort from outside the box. Whites boss Daniel Farke gave winger Harry Wilson his first start in a Leeds shirt after his free transfer from Fulham, while Sunderland counterpart Regis le Bris welcomed a selection of World Cup players back into the team, with striker Brian Brobbey being named in the starting XI.
A marked change in Chelsea's approach to recruitment has been amplified by prospective deals for veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. Welbeck will become the oldest signing under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership, until Henderson's likely arrival with the west Londoners. After interest in Sunderland's Granit Xhaka did not materialise into a deal, attention pivoted to other targets as part of new manager Xabi Alonso's drive to add experience to Chelsea's squad, which has been the youngest in the Premier League for the past two seasons.
