The 31-year-old remains the Red Devils’ first choice left-back, with the club surprisingly not adding to their options in that position over the summer. The England international has started all three Premier League games so far this campaign under Michael Carrick and has come under fire for parts of his performances. Wayne Rooney called for Shaw to be dropped after opening weekend defeat to Hull City, having accused him of ‘schoolboy defending’ in the 2-0 loss. Former United left-back Patrice Evra said Shaw’s ‘time has gone’ at the club, while Paul Scholes urged the Red Devils to sign Newcastle’s Lewis Hall to replace him. The former Southampton full-back did look decent going forward against Everton, providing an assist in the 2-2 draw on Sunday and Pallister feels he deserves patience. You’re looking at the people in front as well. The midfielders have got to give you that kind of protection. Are United getting that, that balance right? I don’t know. ‘It’s something that I’m sure Michael is very well aware of. He spoke after the Everton game about the amount of goals that the team is conceding which puts them on the back foot. He’s not going to be able to address that in terms of transfers because the window’s passed. So we’ve got to crack on with what we’ve got. ‘Whether he mixes it up, brings Ayden back in, or he brings Leny back in, we shall wait and see, but United as a team have got to be a lot better equipped to deal with the opposition.’ Carrick’s team is back in action on Thursday in the Champions League against Azerbaijani side Sabah. Shaw did not train on Wednesday, with Carrick explaining: ‘Yeah, we just gave him an extra recovery day today, Luke. ‘So, obviously, we’ll see tomorrow how he is but it’s not an ongoing thing or planning like that. Wayne Rooney says Michael Carrick ‘has been left short’ after Manchester United’s summer transfer window (Stick to United) Wayne Rooney believes Michael Carrick has been ‘left short’ by Manchester United’s hierarchy after the summer transfer window. United focused on bolstering Carrick’s midfield options in the summer window as the club spent around £150 million on the signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. A move for Lewis Hall was also considered but United opted not to submit an offer to Newcastle United, who had no interest in selling the 22-year-old left-back. Rooney feels United needed to sign a left-back to provide support for Luke Shaw and also insists a new striker was required to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko, who is yet to start a Premier League game this season. Sign up now for free. ‘I just felt, and the Everton game showed me what I felt as well, they [United] were the better team, had a lot of control in the game, but a lack of a No.9, so for whatever reason Sesko is not fully fit, he missed pre-season,’ Rooney said on Stick to United. ‘Lacking a No.9, full-back position in terms of competition for places. Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United needed to sign a striker to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko (PA Wire) ‘I thought Luke Shaw was really good [against Everton], possibly could have got closer for the first goal but I thought he played really well, and that connection with Rashford was good. ‘But I think with Dalot and Mazraoui coming on, for a team who want to compete and compete at the top end of the Premier League, great getting back in the Champions League but you want to get in the Champions League and try to compete as well. Are we going to win the Champions League? Probably not, you never know but probably not. ‘But you want a squad of players who are going to compete and I think Michael has been left short on that. ‘Luke is not going to play every game, Dalot and Mazraoui coming on at left-back, again, we’re seeing too many players player in unfamiliar positions to them. And I think that’s where the club should have went out and got players to help. ‘You would certainly be asking questions. I know Michael has come out and said he’s happy with the players they’ve got in. I don’t think any manager is happy, you always more more, more players and help for your team on the pitch. ‘The back line I don’t think is the strongest. Harry Maguire is probably the first-choice centre-back, then you’ve got Martinez who has got his injury problems, Heaven, who has got a lot of potential and I really like but it is potential and we’ve not seen enough of him. The Red Devils beat Ipswich Town 5-2 on Sunday to pick up their first win of the season after their shock 2-0 loss at Hull City on the opening weekend. The back four has come in for question over those two games, with Michael Carrick picking Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw on Sunday, with Noussair Mazroui and Ayden Heaven starting with Maguire and Shaw against Hull. Carrick also has the likes of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, when he is fit, available to him, but Neville believes he need to sign at least one more defender this week. Sign up now for free. ‘If Michael Carrick could get a defender or two in in the next 48 hours, I think it’s really important,’ the former full-back said on The Gary Neville Podcast. ‘Manchester United have rebuilt their attack last season, they’ve rebuilt the midfield this season and it feels like they’re going to wait to rebuild their defence for another 12 months. ‘I don’t know if there are one or two defenders available, but if there are, can you somehow try and advance that money into this window and then spend less next season? That’s not ideal at all. ‘One of them is makeshift full-back at best, there’s no lack of willingness for him to play there, but he’s not a full-back. Mazraoui can play left-back, but he’s not the left-back that you want there.’ Neville suggested that Carrick would have to restructure the rest of his team if Manchester United cannot sign new defenders, with Carlos Baleba still to come into the midfield after signing from Brighton. That will be Michael Carrick’s concern. ‘So that’s the big question – can Michael Carrick get a defender or two in the next 48 hours? If he can’t, then how does he structure the team? ‘Carrick may have a thought process of how he can solidify the defensive part without bringing another defender in and that’s something that could be possible, but bringing in at least one defender in, maybe two, would change the whole dynamic of how you think about Manchester United’s season. I think we’re a better group, a better squad, potentially a better team, you know. Adding Marcus [Rashford] into that feels like a new signing. ‘So, in that respect, we’re quite happy. With Casemiro leaving the club and Manuel Ugarte sidelined with a long-term knee injury, United have brought in three new options in midfield. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arrived from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively with the rebuild completed this week with Carlos Baleba joining from Brighton. As they did with their attack last summer, midfield has been United’s top priority with close to £150million spent on the revamp. But Saturday’s season-opening defeat to Hull City demonstrated there are still problems to be solved elsewhere. United’s defence looked off the pace, conceding twice on set pieces against the newly-promoted side despite Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw all having full pre-season campaigns under their belts. United legend Yorke, part of the famous Treble-winning squad, fears United have spent too much time and money focusing on midfield in what has been a very ‘weird’ transfer window for the club. ‘Carlos Baleba to Man Utd? It’s been a very weird transfer window,’ Yorke told Reviant. United were looking to pick up where they left off last season under Carrick, but were instead outthought and outmuscled on opening day as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Hull City. Much has been made of United’s moves to bolster their midfield over the summer transfer window, but it was instead set-pieces and defensive errors that cost the Red Devils up against their newly-promoted opponents. Maguire started alongside Ayden Heaven in the heart of United’s defence, with Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt both still working their way back to full fitness. But former Red Devils striker Yorke believes Maguire can no longer be trusted as a regular starter and is ‘not the answer’ for Carrick’s side moving forward. ‘Harry Maguire over the years has been a really good servant to the club, but in my opinion, United should look to freshen things up in that area,’ he told Reviant. ‘He’s done incredibly well and deserves credit for that. But if United want to push on and compete with the best players, we all know that as a defender, you cannot be as immobile or as slow as he has become. I don’t think that is enough anymore. ‘I think it was a different factor playing against United before, where the team used to dominate the ball so the defenders didn’t have to do as much. ‘But now, when you’re asking defenders to do a great deal to defend one-v-one, I don’t think Harry Maguire is the ideal candidate. That’s just my opinion.’ Yorke continued: ‘I’ve been a head coach now, so I see it from a manager’s point of view. You need people who are capable of defending one-on-one, and for the standards of Harry Maguire, in my opinion, I don’t think he should be at the football club. We want to be a team that is competing for the Premier League and competing for major trophies. ‘I’m not sure Harry Maguire is the answer for us going forward. And it’s not just him, I have to say. If you look at the changes United have been making, we’re not making changes in that department, apart from the goalkeeper. ‘So when you look at the defensive areas of our team, it’s a similar bunch of players that is going to get us through, and it’s an ageing one, I must say. That’s a little bit concerning for me.’ United are looking to provide Carrick with depth at left-back after Luke Shaw started all 38 league games last season for the first time in his Old Trafford career. Sesko could have some role to play this weekend (Picture: Manchester United) Manchester United begin their Premier League campaign away to newly-promoted Hull City this afternoon. Summer transfer business at Old Trafford is not done yet with the club working on getting a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba over the line. But Michael Carrick has refreshed his midfield options with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively. Santos featured heavily in pre-season with Tielemans joining up three weeks ago. Kobbie Mainoo only returned to training at the start of last week following his summer break having also picked up an injury at the end of England’s World Cup campaign – where he didn’t see a minute of action. Should Mainoo still be working towards full fitness, we could see the new partnership of Tielemans and Santos anchor the midfield at the MKM Stadium. Mason Mount started in central midfield on the final day of last season and impressed again in that role during pre-season. But an injury has again derailed his prospects with a minor hamstring tear sidelining him. Benjamin Sesko is another who endured a frustrating pre-season, not playing a single game as he continued his recovery from a shin injury he suffered back in May. The Slovenia international has returned to training and is ‘close to getting some minutes’ according to Carrick, suggesting he is not going to start this afternoon. Matthijs de Ligt is also back in training but his return would appear to still be some way off. The Netherlands international has not played since November last year, undergoing back surgery in May. The Cameroon international looked very sharp in pre-season and regularly played through the middle under Carrick last season as Sesko settled into a super-sub role. Marcus Rashford is another with not much of a pre-season under his belt, playing his first minutes off the bench against AC Milan last weekend. He may settle for a role off the bench today. The fit-again Patrick Dorgu is also an option on the left. Ayden Heaven was the only centre-half to start all six of United’s pre-season games with Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro also featuring prominently.
