Matt: In: Lucas Bergvall - we need a midfielder with Premier League experience to replace Anderson. Out: Morato - always has a mistake in him and if we are to compete at the higher end of the table, we need to remove mistakes from our game. One in - Diomande from Sporting would be a more than adequate replacement, and he's a player Glasner has shown interest in previously.

It was a statistically weird game for Argentina’s talisman against England, full of outliers. It didn’t matterThomas Tuchel will have prepared for every eventuality before England’s match with Argentina. He will have considered how his team could prosper in attack while remaining solid in defence. What to change if they scored first or if the opening goal went against them and, like so many managers before him, he will have put plenty of thought into how best to deal with Lionel Messi. For the first hour he was largely peripheral, with the data showing how England were limiting his involvement in dangerous areas. Messi’s only possession in the centre of the penalty area was snuffed out by an Elliot Anderson tackle shortly after Anthony Gordon had scored. The proportion of the distance he covered that was defined by Fifa as sprinting speed (at least 20km/h) was 4.3%, lower than against Switzerland (4.6%) or Egypt (5.4%) in the previous two rounds. Despite dealing with numerous injuries throughout the 2026 World Cup, England have managed to reach the semifinals, where they will face Argentina. Ahead of the match, Thomas Tuchel has received a major boost, as Declan Rice is reportedly available to play. England have been one of the teams most affected by injuries throughout the 2026 World Cup. Despite losing several stars for parts of the tournament, they have managed to maintain a high level of competitiveness, defeating Norway to reach the semifinals. Although Declan Rice appeared to be a doubt for the match against Argentina, he is reportedly expected to be available, providing a major boost for Thomas Tuchel‘s team. Declan Rice had been dealing with stomach issues that left him significantly limited in recent days. He was forced to stay almost three days in bed before facing Norway, head coach Thomas Tuchel reported. Despite this, the Three Lions have received a positive update, as the 27-year-old star is now fully fit and available to start against Argentina, according to Sky Sports, via X, formerly Twitter. Being a cornerstone of Tuchel’s system, he is expected to start again alongside Elliot Anderson. With this duo in midfield, England may look to dominate Argentina by controlling the midfield battle and imposing their own rhythm on the game. Nonetheless, they may need Reece James’ contribution from right-back to provide additional defensive solidity in midfield. While Declan started the previous match, he was only able to play 45 minutes because of his physical issues. Unlike it, he is expected to be available for the full 90 minutes against Argentina, looking to make the same kind of impact he had in earlier matches. As in previous games, head coach Thomas Tuchel is expected to make very few changes to his lineup, with the main uncertainty remaining on the wings. Rice scored in the first half England will still be without two players vs. Argentina England have had to adapt to the absences of Reece James, Declan Rice, and several other players, all of whom have significantly affected their tactical approach. However, Thomas Tuchel will have both players available again. That does not mean they will not have to make adjustments to their squad, though, as they still have two key absences ahead of the match against Argentina. Head coach Thomas Tuchel will be without Jarell Quansah, as he was handed a three-match suspension following his red card against Mexico. As a result, England lose a valuable defensive backup who could also cover at full-back, forcing them to adapt. Jordan Henderson will also be unavailable after suffering a fractured arm during the celebrations, ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
Tuchel’s half-time changes and Pickford’s skittishness lifted Norway, but backline finally rose to occasionEngland were back in Azteca mode in the end. Big Dan Burn was on to thump those headers away. Reece James and the magnificent Djed Spence were covering the flanks, Elliot Anderson was taking care of midfield on his own and the problem for Norway was that the hulking figure leading their attack was no longer on the pitch as they tried to find a way through England’s back five at the end of extra time in Miami. It would be a push to call this a tactical or defensive masterclass from Thomas Tuchel. The German made a rare misstep at half-time, handing the game to Martin Ødegaard when the unwell Declan Rice had to go off, and spent the rest of the second half trying to correct his mistake. First James had to come on for Anthony Gordon, depriving England of one of their main counterattacking outlets as a sense of dread took over, and it was only when the counterpressing of Morgan Rogers was added to the midfield mix that a semblance of order was restored.
