Qatar player Assim Madibo was given a five-match ban on Wednesday for the tackle that broke the leg of Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné at the World Cup. Madibo was issued a straight red card for the incident during Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday.

As Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo flew in with an aggressive challenge to dispossess him, the Canadian star collapsed heavily to the grass with an apparent leg fracture. According to reporter Fabrizio Romano, Kone suffered a fractured tibia and fibula. The injury will sideline him completely for the remainder of the World Cup, as he could be out for four to five months. The sheer severity of the injury caused immediate distress on the pitch, with several Canadian teammates visibly shaken. While referee Cristian Garay initially issued a yellow card to Madibo, an intervention from the VAR prompted an on-field review.
