During Eddie Howe’s time at Newcastle, only four clubs earned more Premier League points, but the team underperformed last termWhen Eddie Howe was appointed by Newcastle in November 2021, the club was 19th in the Premier League with no wins after 11 games. He steered them to 11th by the end of the campaign, and they finished 12th last season. At some clubs there would have been little deviation across that period. Crystal Palace, for example, have ended every one of the previous 13 seasons between 10th and 15th in the Premier League. For Newcastle under Howe, the journey was rather more scenic. For anyone outside the dressing room it is hard to predict what the Mister will do but he will be prepared for Japan on MondayThe 2022 Champions League semi-final. The Santiago Bernabéu. More than 60,000 fans in the stands, and Manchester City leading 1-0. I was on the Real Madrid bench when Carlo Ancelotti called me over and told me to get on the pitch, play aggressively and decide the match.I stepped on to the field in the 68th minute. We won and the rest is history: another title for the club after beating Liverpool in the final. I bring up this moment to highlight how important coaches are to a team’s journey and how decisive they are in a player’s career, doing work that often goes unseen by the public. Continue reading...

After a glitzy roster reveal event in New York, the US begin their World Cup journey in the suburbs of AtlantaThe USMNT 2026 World Cup squad – in picturesOn Tuesday, Mauricio Pochettino was joined by his 26 players and hundreds of fans for a grand reveal in Manhattan. In truth, it was a nationally televised confirmation, more than 72 hours after the United States’ roster was reported in full by the Guardian.A half dozen or so of those fans scrawled signs to be held overhead during the broadcast. A few were fitting entries in a proud litany of “Rah-Rah USA” fare. One begged: “Please do better than Canada.” Three that were easily legible on Fox’s broadcast bore players’ names. One backed Matt Freese, the likely starting goalkeeper, who plays his club soccer for nearby New York City FC. Continue reading...
Thomas Tuchel has placed great faith in John Stones and Djed Spence while ignoring several star names in attackThomas Tuchel said that whittling down his 55-player longlist gave him “a certain edge”. There were some tough phone calls and some decisions inevitably caused outrage. But there was a pointed remark from Tuchel about how creating a winning team is not necessarily “to select the most talented 26 players”. Was there a message to Harry Maguire after the defender aired his grievances at being overlooked? “I think it was not necessary,” Tuchel said of Maguire’s decision to go public. Continue reading...
