Another is Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been cleared to play for the first time in nearly two years after his doping ban was resolved by the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Football Association. The bid fell ‘well short of Chelsea’s expectations’ but talks are ongoing and Mudryk himself is keen on the switch to Elland Road. It is said the player would prefer to stay in England, seemingly ruling out a switch to interested clubs in Italy and Chelsea’s sister-club Strasbourg. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s opening fixture against Fulham, Alonso had this to say about Mudryk’s future: ‘We will see, we still have time to decide and we don’t have to rush on many decisions and at the right time, we will take them. Chelsea have made midfielder Dario Essugo available to leave on a season-long loan deal. The 21-year-old signed from Portuguese club Sporting for £18m in 2025 and is now expected to leave on a temporary basis and a move to Strasbourg is the prominent possibility. Chelsea have also proposed a move to the Ligue 1 club for Mykhailo Mudryk.

The 21-year-old skippered a the Blues in their meeting with Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta’zim, which ended 3-3. Chelsea beat AC Milan 3-0 in a friendly on Saturday, so manager Xabi Alonso completely changed the starting line-up, but there were still plenty of recognisable names in it. Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Estevao made up the front three, with the likes of Jamie Gittens, Tosin Adarabioyo and Geovany Quenda all starting as well. It was Essugo who got the nod as captain, having also worn the armband earlier in pre-season as well. The midfielder suggested his maturity has earned him the honour, hoping to show to other young players at the club that age is just a number. ‘For me it was a surprise but of course it’s a pleasure,’ the Portuguese prospect said. ‘I didn’t expect to be captain at this age and at this big club so for me it’s just a pleasure and I enjoyed it a lot. It’s a message for me and for all the players that it’s not about the age, but maybe it’s about maturity. It’s learning and staying positive.’ On how he feels he is developing at Chelsea, he said: ‘[I’ve learned] a lot because here we have a lot of big players, so I try to learn from everyone.
