Replacement keeper Lammens made crucial errorGarcia: ‘Only players who are 100% fit can play’Rudi Garcia came under fire for replacing his injured first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, in Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final defeat by Spain on Friday, adding to questions about the coach’s future.Courtois felt he could continue despite a twinge in his leg, but Garcia insisted that he came off as he was not 100% fit. Senne Lammens went on as his replacement after 71 minutes but spilt a low strike by Pau Cubarsí, allowing the Spain substitute Mikel Merino to pounce in the 86th minute and secure a 2-1 victory. Thibaut Courtois left the field early in the loss to Spain, but the goalkeeper of Belgium felt he could continue. While there was a team expected to reach the semifinal of the 2026 World Cup in Spain, injuries were a huge factor for Belgium. The loss of Youri Tielemans before the match began was joined by Thibaut Courtois‘ muscle issue that made Rudi García substitute him out. Courtois said: “I felt a lot of pain in my quadriceps. But I had no problem staying in goal, only taking long kicks. In the end, the manager decided to take me off. That’s no problem because the team comes above everything.” It was a 2-1 loss made even more painful by how it ended. Courtois was attended by the medical staff before being replaced by Senne Lammens in the 71st minute. The issue was that Lammens left a rebound for Mikel Merino to score near the end after a weak shot from Pau Cubarsí. Courtois wants a long break There’s no denying that Courtois has made history with Belgium, not just by representing his country at club level with Real Madrid but also by being the national team’s goalkeeper for many years. Lammens was the goalkeeper who replaced him (Luke Hales/Getty Images) That period did not come without problems, as he had already been exiled from the team from mid-2023 to 2025 after a disagreement with former manager Domenico Tedesco about the captaincy. Now, he admitted he wants to take a long break from international duty before returning. Courtois said: “I’d like to take a break from the Nations League, which isn’t that important, and return for the Euro qualifying campaign. It’s a decision that has to be made together with the federation. If they agree with that plan. Otherwise, today would have been my last match.” Courtois on Real Madrid Clubs are already making moves to be ready when the competition ends, with Real Madrid among the most active after also hiring José Mourinho as their new manager. Courtois said: “Real Madrid have signed good players and a top manager. Now it’s up to us to respond.”

Rudi Garcia says his team can benefit from Balogun red card saga‘Everyone is talking about us going home but we can do it,’ coach saysRudi Garcia has claimed that Belgium have got “millions and millions” of new supporters after Donald Trump lobbied Fifa to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card ahead of their victory against the USA in the last 16 – and that they will take “incredible strength” from that against Spain in their quarter-final. The Belgium coach also insisted that he has faith in his team, even though “everyone thinks we are going home”. Garcia, after all, has a not-so-secret weapon sitting on the bench: when striker Romelu Lukaku is introduced, he said, opponents “quake in their boots”.Trump boasted that he had phoned Fifa to get Balogun’s punishment put on hold after the direct red card he was shown against Bosnia and Herzegovina. But despite Fifa’s unprecedented decision to suspended the striker’s ban for a year, Belgium still defeated the USA 4-1. At full-time, the Belgium football federation’s social media accounts declared “overturn this” and players celebrated by parodying Trump’s dance. Garcia also confirmed that he had spoken to Balogun, telling him he could not be blamed for Trump’s lobbying or Fifa’s willingness to cede to it. Continue reading...

Jeremy Doku has been left on Belgium's bench for the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 game against the USMNT. Belgium faces the USMNT on Monday, July 6th, at Seattle Stadium in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16, with a quarterfinal spot on the line. Jeremy Doku‘s absence from the starting lineup, however, has raised questions among fans. Doku has been dropped from the starting XI by head coach Rudi Garcia following a series of underwhelming performances during the tournament. The Manchester City winger will begin the match on the bench, waiting for his opportunity if called upon. Garcia addressed Doku’s situation at his pre-match press conference, leaving little ambiguity about the decision. “We played without Jeremy in the three group stage matches,” the coach noted, referencing his starts against Egypt and in the 5-1 win over New Zealand. The Belgian boss also pointed to the disruptions that affected Doku’s buildup to the tournament, including his temporary departure from camp for the birth of his son. “Jeremy wasn’t always available during our preparations. When a player isn’t at their best, they can experience a dip afterward. That’s what happened,” Garcia said. Ben Old of New Zealand competes for the ball with Jeremy Doku of Belgium. Doku and a troubled World Cup Heading into the tournament, Doku was one of Belgium’s most exciting players to watch, his explosiveness and dribbling ability having established him as a key piece at Manchester City. But a series of off-field disruptions have prevented him from finding anywhere near his best form. His preparation was compromised from the start by a respiratory illness that hampered his buildup in the weeks before the tournament. Then came the birth of his first child in the middle of the competition, which required a lightning-fast trip to London and cost him the game against Iran. The accumulated disruptions have shown up clearly in his numbers on the field. Of 13 attempted dribbles across the three matches he started, Doku completed just six, far below the standard expected of him. A single completed dribble against Senegal in the Round of 32 proved to be the tipping point, prompting Garcia to drop him from the starting lineup for the first time at this World Cup.

Rudi Garcia railed against criticism of his side, who face Senegal in the last 32 with a spring in their step after the 5-1 hammering of New ZealandBelgium had just beaten New Zealand 5-1 to secure top spot in Group G and, at least in theory, an easier last-32 draw, but Rudi Garcia was evidently irked. In response to the first question in a curt post-match press conference, he adjusted the microphone to ensure his point was heard.“I really didn’t appreciate them being called has-beens,” he said, alluding to an article in La Libre, a French-language Belgian newspaper, that compared Kevin De Bruyne to a washed-up Hollywood actor after a flat display against Iran in their previous match in Los Angeles.
