Rangers striker Lawrence Shankland has seen enough from his side to believe they are heading in the right direction. The former Hearts striker joined the Glasgow club earlier this summer, along with manager Derek McInnes as the Ibrox side continue to search for their first win under the new boss. Rangers drew 1-1 with Dundee United in their first league game of the new season last week, before losing 2-1 to Jagiellonia Bialystok in the first leg of the Europa League qualifier.
Former Rangers striker Rory Loy was bemused by Derek McInnes' decision to not start with two up front in the season-opening 1-1 draw at Dundee United. Captain Lawrence Shankland was deployed behind lone striker Ryan Naderi, who made way for Youssef Chermiti in the second half. "The one thing I just could not quite believe is that he didn't start with two strikers," Loy told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast.
Rangers fans, we asked for your views after Lawrence Shankland was named captain for the upcoming season. Ross: My first two choices - Nicolas Raskin and John Souttar - both now seem destined to leave so Lawrence seems like a great pick from what we have. Lawrence bleeds blue and knows exactly what our club requires.
Head coach Derek McInnes insists Lawrence Shankland understands the expectations of Rangers after being named captain. The 30-year-old striker succeeds departed right-back James Tavernier, who McInnes felt was treated "unfairly" during parts of his captaincy. With that in mind, McInnes has urged the entire Rangers team to "share the load" of responsibility.
Derek McInnes has been speaking to the media as he prepares for his first competitive game as Rangers head coach away to Dundee United on Friday night. After naming striker Lawrence Shankland as captain, McInnes says he "has evidence of how well he runs a dressing room [at Hearts]" and stresses "he knows the club, he knows what's expected and we have a strong relationship as well". The Rangers boss admits he needs more than just Shankland to lead: "We need as many captains underneath him to share the burden."
