That meant Reece James started in midfield against Arsenal, while another traditional right-back, Malo Gusto, was introduced from the bench. This Sunday will see Martinez return to the Emirates, having previously spent eight years at Arsenal, which culminated with winning the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2020 under Arteta. Having won their first Premier League title in 22 years, the Gunners did not rest on their laurels over the summer transfer window, spending almost £200million on five new signings. Piero Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent, with Ezri Konsa arriving from Aston Villa to add more depth across the defensive line. Illan Meslier arrived as a third-choice goalkeeper from Leeds United, while Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis were also signed from Newcastle United and Club Brugge, respectively. Arsenal had been keen to strengthen further on the left wing, but fell short in their pursuit of Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior. And with that in mind, Smith believes the club should not have been so hasty to let go of Leandro Trossard, who joined Besiktas for a measly £17m fee earlier in the summer. ‘Time will tell, but Trossard, on paper, is more of a loss,’ Smith told Metro via BestBettingSites.co.uk. I think they’ll be feeling really bullish about things, City.’ Chelsea are another team being talked up as potential title challengers for Arsenal, but Smith can’t see Xabi Alonso’s side staying the course despite the impressive late signing of Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. ‘It makes them better by some margin, I would say, not only what he can give them in terms of commanding his box, but the confidence it will give his defenders and team in general,’ he said. ‘He is a world-class keeper, and he’s a big personality. As for a title challenge, I do see them just being off it at the moment. ‘I might be proved wrong. Who can say what’s going to happen with injuries over the course of the season? ‘If they keep Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro together, it gives them a great chance. The Blues spent well over £300m in the summer, bolstering Xabi Alonso’s squad with more than ten new signings. Morgan Rogers was Chelsea’s most expensive acquisition, becoming the most expensive British player in history after completing a £117m move from Aston Villa. But the west Londoners also spent big on the likes of Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco and Pep Chavarria, while signing experienced ex-England stars Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. Chelsea looked set to put their faith in Robert Sanchez again this season but performed a U-turn after his shaky performance in the Premier League opener against Fulham, quickly signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in a deal worth just £7.5m.
