It was a statistically weird game for Argentina’s talisman against England, full of outliers. It didn’t matterThomas Tuchel will have prepared for every eventuality before England’s match with Argentina. He will have considered how his team could prosper in attack while remaining solid in defence. What to change if they scored first or if the opening goal went against them and, like so many managers before him, he will have put plenty of thought into how best to deal with Lionel Messi. For the first hour he was largely peripheral, with the data showing how England were limiting his involvement in dangerous areas. Messi’s only possession in the centre of the penalty area was snuffed out by an Elliot Anderson tackle shortly after Anthony Gordon had scored. The proportion of the distance he covered that was defined by Fifa as sprinting speed (at least 20km/h) was 4.3%, lower than against Switzerland (4.6%) or Egypt (5.4%) in the previous two rounds. Tuchel’s half-time changes and Pickford’s skittishness lifted Norway, but backline finally rose to occasionEngland were back in Azteca mode in the end. Big Dan Burn was on to thump those headers away. Reece James and the magnificent Djed Spence were covering the flanks, Elliot Anderson was taking care of midfield on his own and the problem for Norway was that the hulking figure leading their attack was no longer on the pitch as they tried to find a way through England’s back five at the end of extra time in Miami. It would be a push to call this a tactical or defensive masterclass from Thomas Tuchel. The German made a rare misstep at half-time, handing the game to Martin Ødegaard when the unwell Declan Rice had to go off, and spent the rest of the second half trying to correct his mistake. First James had to come on for Anthony Gordon, depriving England of one of their main counterattacking outlets as a sense of dread took over, and it was only when the counterpressing of Morgan Rogers was added to the midfield mix that a semblance of order was restored. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has yet to feature for England at the 2026 World Cup with Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson emerging as Thomas Tuchel's preferred starters in central midfield. When Rice was injured for the final group game against Panama, Tuchel made a tactical change to start Morgan Rogers and then Jordan Henderson was preferred to come on from the bench.
Elliot Anderson made his Newcastle United debut in an FA Cup defeat by Arsenal in January 2021, and went on to make 55 appearances in all competitions for the club before joining Bristol Rovers on loan a year later. Former Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan, who was a player-coach there at the time, vividly remembers the impact the confident "but never arrogant" Anderson made in the West Country. "He just came into the building and showed his potential straight away," Whelan told BBC Sport.
