Michael Carrick is closing in on Man Utd’s fourth major signing of the summer (Photo: Getty) Carlos Baleba may have to play out of position at Manchester United if Michael Carrick fails to land his top transfer target. The Brighton star is expected to complete a long-anticipated move to Old Trafford in the coming days, with the two clubs close to agreeing a deal worth up to £65million. United fans will have to wait a little while for his debut however, with Baleba currently sidelined with an ankle ligament injury. The 22-year-old will compete for a spot in Carrick’s midfield engine room against Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and fellow summer signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. But he may well be deployed in a new role for the Red Devils, with the club struggling to sign a left-back before deadline day on September. The Athletic report that after the arrival of Tielemans and Santos, United’s focus switched to recruiting cover and competition for Luke Shaw – the only natural left-back in the first-team. But when the injury-prone Mount suffered another setback in pre-season, the recruitment team decided to look at players capable of operating both in midfield and at full-back. Carlos Baleba has NEVER played at left-back (Photo: Getty) Targets included Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga but with both unattainable, they pivoted back to Baleba. Baleba has never played at left-back before but is left-footed and has previously filled in as a centre-back for Brighton. It is reported that the Cameroon international will be considered to play there if need be, a scenario that will surely arise with Carrick struggling to get a defender through the door before before the transfer window closes. Luke Shaw is Man Utd’s only first-team left-back (Photo: Getty) United’s top left-back targets are Lewis Hall and Joaquin Seys but Newcastle United and Club Brugge are adamant they are going nowhere this summer. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is the latest name linked with Old Trafford, with United holding talks with the Spain international’s agent. Additionally, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez and Patrick Dorgu have all covered at left-back before, but none are considered naturals in that position. United kick-off their season on Saturday with a trip to newly-promoted Hull City. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Joaquin Seys is valued at £30m by Club Brugge (Photo: Getty) Club Brugge manager Ivan Leko admits he is ‘proud’ to see Joaquin Seys linked with a big money transfer to Manchester United and Arsenal. And Leko has conceded that it would be ‘hard to say no’ to selling his star defender this summer, if the right offer was made. Seys has been tipped to move to the Premier League following an excellent 2025/26 season, in which he won the Belgium Pro League and reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Porto and Benfica have also been linked with the highly-rated 21-year-old who is valued at £30million by Brugge. Signing a new left-back is now Man Utd’s top priority until the end of the transfer window, though Flemish outlet Het Nieuwsblad claim that they are yet to make a formal approach for the player. With Patrick Dorgu now viewed as a winger by Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw is the only natural left-back in the squad and surely cannot be relied upon for a full season with Champions League football given his injury history. After selling Christos Tzolis to Arsenal for £34m earlier this summer, do not want to lose anymore of their prized assets including Seys and Barcelona target Nicolò Tresoldi. How much of those rumours is true? I don’t know. But we all have eyes in our heads: their potential is incredible. The focus is entirely on OHL.’ Leko previously claimed Seys was destined to play at the top of the Premier League and believes there is a chance he will move on before deadline day. ‘If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no,’ He added. ‘The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season. ‘The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
