The US men’s national team have already made history this summer. They scored the most goals they ever have in a single World Cup game, won two straight games in the tournament for the first time in the modern era, and wrapped up top spot in an evenly-matched Group D with a game to spare. On Thursday evening they faced a far more familiar foe: World Cup adversity. And in the key moments – the kind of spots where knockout games are won and lost – they wilted. The US men’s national team have already made history this summer. On Thursday evening they faced a far more familiar foe: World Cup adversity. Kaan Ayhan’s goal with the last kick of the game sealed a 3-2 win for Turkey, giving their disastrous tournament a positive ending.
The USMNT lost 3-2 to Turkiye in Christian Pulisic's return coming off the bench. While many countries were still fighting for the final places in the next round of the 2026 World Cup, the USMNT already knew their position while Turkiye were already eliminated. It was a great match in which Turkiye won on the final play, ruining Christian Pulisic’s return. In the first half, the USMNT started very strong with an early goal by Auston Trusty. However, Turkiye managed to come back with a quick Arda Güler goal before Orkun Kökçü scored to make it 2-1 for Turkiye. In the second half, the USMNT went out motivated and levelled the match with a good goal by Sebastian Berhalter. A key moment for the team was the inclusion from the bench of Pulisic in the 58th minute after leaving at halftime of the first match. That momentum was ruined by Kaan Ayhan’s late goal in the final moments of the match.
The United States and Turkey delivered a dramatic Group D finale as Kaan Ayhan’s stoppage-time goal secured a 3-2 win for Turkey and brought Team USA’s perfect group-stage run to an end, although their qualification had already been confirmed. In the parallel fixture, Australia’s draw with Paraguay ensured their progression to the last 32, with Paraguay also likely to advance.
