It was "incredible" how Craig Gordon came back from a double leg break four years ago to make this summer's finals and end his career with Scotland at the World Cup, Rory Loy has stated on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. Ex-striker Loy suffered the same injury as the former Celtic, Hearts and Sunderland goalkeeper, who announced he is retiring from playing on Thursday. "I did the same thing, but I did it when I was 20, 23," he said of Gordon, who suffered the injury at the age of 39.
England are out of the World Cup after a heart-breaking late collapse against Argentina. But with Lionel Messi totally ineffective before Anthony Gordon's opening goal, England never again threatened to score after taking the lead. Adam Clery looks at how both the team, and manager Thomas Tuchel, managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of a famous victory.
Former Sunderland striker Marco Gabbiadini says rivals Newcastle selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham in a deal worth up to £100m is "probably a positive thing" for the Magpies. Eddie Howe's side have effectively needed to trade to reinvest with Alexander Isak, Antony Gordon and now Tonali all leaving the club in the space of less than a year. "Newcastle have had an issue for a number of years with the financial situation and selling players for that value, and replacing them with younger players, will make a huge change to their squad cost ratio," Gabbiadini told BBC Radio Newcastle.
Inverted wingers were unable to adjust their game, even when they kept running down the same dead end streetAfter the high: the comedown. You could probably have seen this coming. If only that rush after half-time in Dallas, where England surged with such alluring creative energy, hadn’t been quite so much of a buzz.It turns out, however, that this is still an England tournament team. Nothing comes easily. The world will not bend to you. We can’t have nice things. Or only some nice things sometimes. By the end watching England struggle in Boston against a gristly and indigestible Ghana was like having your will, hope, sense of fun slowly sucked out of your body through a surgical drainage catheter. The 25-year journey of Coventry City, from their relegation from the Premier League in 2001 to the return after winning the Championship title last season, is the subject of a new, six-part documentary. The series, called Back Where We Belong, has been produced by BBC CWR and it is told through the voices of those who lived it: the fans. The first episode covers the club's relegation at the end of the 2000-01 season under manager Gordon Strachan.
With the sale of Gordon, will this give us strong opportunity to compete for stronger players? Ciaran: A big sale was definitely a necessity to unlock some headroom and enable Newcastle to reinvest. Newcastle do not necessarily have the capability to bring in a replacement with an even stronger profile given the wages and fees such talents command.
