In the fullness of time Chelsea’s surrender against Brighton in April may be seen as the turning point. The humiliation accelerated Liam Rosenior’s demise and forced the Stamford Bridge hierarchy into a reckoning leading to the appointment of Xabi Alonso, a shift in transfer strategy, the birth of the JP Morgan front three and the end of Robert Sánchez’s time in goal.For now, though, the argument that Emiliano Martínez is the final piece in the jigsaw seems a touch premature. With seven goals scored and five conceded while winning their first two league games, it is not hard to see where Chelsea need to improve in order to sustain a title challenge. After a disastrous season that saw the club finish 10th, with both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior losing their jobs, the Blues are looking to bounce back under Xabi Alonso. With an impressive manager in the dugout, notable signings like Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix and no European football, some have tipped Chelsea as unlikely title winners. Terry isn’t going that far, declaring that Arsenal are ‘big favourites’ to retain the trophy, but is confident his former side can have a successful season and get off to a near-perfect start. Alonso has been given a fairly favourable set of fixtures to begin his Chelsea career with, starting with a trip to local rivals Fulham on Monday night. In fact, the Blues are not set to play outside London until mid-October. The Chelsea legend has predicted they will begin the campaign with wins against Fulham, Brighton (with help from former Seagull Danny Welbeck), Hull City and Brentford. Most notably, he has predicted the Blues will also secure a 1-1 draw away to the Gunners on September 6, with Alonso’s side to be top of the table after five games. Xabi Alonso’s appointment as Liam Rosenior’s permanent successor has coincided with a significant change in direction for a club that endured another chaotic season last term that saw the Blues fail to qualify for Europe. As such, Chelsea have largely relented from signing untried youngsters from Europe and South America, instead focusing their recruitment drive on Premier League proven players. The arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix typify that new approach, driven by Alonso whose job description as manager, rather than head coach, is no coincidence. Indeed, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder made it clear he would only accept his new role on the proviso he would have a greater say on incomings and outgoings. Having been forced to abandon his pursuit of Granit Xhaka, Alonso has had a major hand in the shock signings of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, who will both be expected to assume senior leadership roles in a dressing room that has sorely missed those qualities, particularly since the departure of Thiago Silva. The ex-Liverpool captain, now 36, has endured something of a nomadic career since leaving Anfield three years ago with his career taking in brief spells at Al-Ettifaq, Ajax and Brentford. ‘I find it strange because I think the signing from Crystal Palace is really good,’ said Carragher of Chelsea’s decision to bring Henderson and Welbeck to the club. ‘You’ve got a lot of young centre backs, he comes in, he knows the league and he’s an experienced player. ‘But you’re talking about the issue on the pitch in terms of red cards and losing leads, throwing leads away. How much are they going to be on the pitch, Henderson and Welbeck? ‘That’s my point, if they were 28 or 29 say like Tielemans in that age bracket. I know they’re going to be great on the training pitch and we’ll be getting hit with those stories if Chelsea make a great start it’ll be Henderson and Welbeck are great in the dressing room. The Argentina international has been considering a move away from Stamford Bridge with doubts over long-term future first emerging back in March. Former Chelsea boss Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola in the City hotseat this summer, is thought to be keen on a reunion with his former midfielder. Chelsea have set a deadline of 5pm (BST) this evening for offers to be tabled, standing firm on their £120million valuation.
