After impressing in Arsenal’s academy set-up, Dowman, 16, broke into Mikel Arteta’s team last season, making 13 appearances in all competitions. The talented midfielder scored a memorable goal against Everton in March, becoming the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the process. The teenager impressed again in pre-season, scoring and assisting in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Girona, but is yet to feature this season for the defending champions. Dowman has been an unused substitute in Arsenal’s victories over Coventry City and Chelsea, but Giggs believes the midfielder’s future is still bright as he reflected on his first time watching the youngster in action. ‘I’ve seen him, it was against United in the Youth Cup,’ Giggs said on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel. ‘I hadn’t really seen him, I’d heard about him. And do you know what? He won the penalty and then took it against players two years above him. That’s not happening when I was in my youth team, there were players, big personalities. ‘And that’s what stood out. I messaged Albert [Stuivenberg], who’s the coach there. I said, “Who’s this Max Dowman?” I said, “He looks unbelievable”. He went, “He’s a special player”. ‘That’s all he said. He said, he’s a special player. Arsenal fans ‘forget’ how ‘important’ Gabriel Martinelli was at times, says Freddie Ljungberg (Picture: Getty) Freddie Ljungberg has questioned Arsenal fans’ treatment of Gabriel Martinelli, accusing supporters of ‘forgetting’ what the attacker did for the club before his summer exit. Martinelli managed just one goal and four assists in the Premier League as Arsenal finally brought their wait for the title to an end last season, in what was the Brazilian’s seventh year at the Emirates. It was subsequently decided that Arsenal would be open to offers for Martinelli after the 25-year-old was named amongst Mikel Arteta’s substitutes for the club’s last six matches of the campaign in all competitions. Martinelli would go on to complete a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal in a deal worth around £60million, becoming the second first-team winger to depart following Leandro Trossard’s switch to Besiktas a month-and-a-half earlier. Christos Tzolis was signed from Club Brugge to help fill the void left by the loss of the two title-winning forwards and the English champions worked right up until the end of the window to find another top-class attacker for Arteta. Greece international Tzolis signed a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium in July after Arsenal agreed a £34m deal with Club Brugge. Mikel Arteta targeted the 24-year-old after sanctioning the exit of Leandro Trossard, while Arsenal also put Gabriel Martinelli up for the sale. Tzolis has enjoyed a bright start to his career in north London, helping the Premier League champions win their first four games of the season ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League opener against Napoli. After bringing Tzolis to the club, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta insisted the Greek winger would ‘raise the technical level of our squad’ and bring a ‘strong mentality to our team’. Martinelli’s move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal was confirmed on Thursday, with the Brazilian winger joining for a fee of £60million. That figure marks a club-record sale for the Gunners, who also let Leandro Trossard depart for Besiktas earlier in the summer. Arsenal brought in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge as a replacement, but the defending champions ultimately failed in their bid to sign a marquee left winger in the summer window. Mikel Arteta would not be drawn on Arsenal's hunt for a new forward after the Gunners were unable to bring in another attacker by Tuesday's transfer deadline. Arsenal signed Christos Tzolis but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Jr, ending the window with fewer attackers in their squad than they started with after sanctioning the departures of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

It was known from the start of the summer that Mikel Arteta was looking to improve his options on the left-flank but his side are now arguably even weaker in that position. Christos Tzolis was signed to replace Leandro Trossard but the Gunners failed to bring in another forward before deadline day and have since allowed Gabriel Martinelli to join Al-Hilal for £60million. That’s despite the Premier League champions pursuing deals for several huge stars over the summer, namely Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez. All three would have set Arsenal back nine-figures, with Rogers joining rivals Chelsea for £117m. But former Arsenal academy star and England international Jay Bothroyd believes a relatively cheaper option would have been the perfect signing – but the player has now joined the Citizens. Yes, he’s started well, but he’s a young, inexperienced player that doesn’t know the Premier League. ‘Having Ndiaye… He would be first choice. He would hit the ground running and it would bring real balance to that Arsenal side.’ Tzolis, a £34m arrival from Club Brugge, recorded three assists in his first two Arsenal games but was hooked at half-time against Aston Villa last Monday following a very poor performance.
