Mikel Arteta would not be drawn on Arsenal's hunt for a new forward after the Gunners were unable to bring in another attacker by Tuesday's transfer deadline. Arsenal signed Christos Tzolis but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Jr, ending the window with fewer attackers in their squad than they started with after sanctioning the departures of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

It was known from the start of the summer that Mikel Arteta was looking to improve his options on the left-flank but his side are now arguably even weaker in that position. Christos Tzolis was signed to replace Leandro Trossard but the Gunners failed to bring in another forward before deadline day and have since allowed Gabriel Martinelli to join Al-Hilal for £60million. That’s despite the Premier League champions pursuing deals for several huge stars over the summer, namely Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez. All three would have set Arsenal back nine-figures, with Rogers joining rivals Chelsea for £117m. But former Arsenal academy star and England international Jay Bothroyd believes a relatively cheaper option would have been the perfect signing – but the player has now joined the Citizens. Having won their first Premier League title in 22 years, the Gunners did not rest on their laurels over the summer transfer window, spending almost £200million on five new signings. Piero Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent, with Ezri Konsa arriving from Aston Villa to add more depth across the defensive line. Illan Meslier arrived as a third-choice goalkeeper from Leeds United, while Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis were also signed from Newcastle United and Club Brugge, respectively. Arsenal had been keen to strengthen further on the left wing, but fell short in their pursuit of Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior. And with that in mind, Smith believes the club should not have been so hasty to let go of Leandro Trossard, who joined Besiktas for a measly £17m fee earlier in the summer. ‘Time will tell, but Trossard, on paper, is more of a loss,’ Smith told Metro via BestBettingSites.co.uk. I think they’ll be feeling really bullish about things, City.’ Chelsea are another team being talked up as potential title challengers for Arsenal, but Smith can’t see Xabi Alonso’s side staying the course despite the impressive late signing of Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. ‘It makes them better by some margin, I would say, not only what he can give them in terms of commanding his box, but the confidence it will give his defenders and team in general,’ he said. ‘He is a world-class keeper, and he’s a big personality. As for a title challenge, I do see them just being off it at the moment. ‘I might be proved wrong. Who can say what’s going to happen with injuries over the course of the season? ‘If they keep Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro together, it gives them a great chance. But Dortmund intensified their interest in Nwaneri after new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a devastating knee injury in the side’s DFB-Pokal victory over Hamburg on Tuesday night. However, according to German newspaper Bild, a hesitant Arteta needed quite a bit of convincing before signing off on the attacking midfielder’s temporary departure. It’s claimed Arteta ‘deliberated for a long time about whether’ he would regret losing Nwaneri, especially with the Premier League champions failing to bring in a left winger to fill the void left by Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on deadline day. The report adds that the move ‘hung in the balance’ before BVB eventually got their man, with the club’s sporting director Nils-Ole Book maintaining close contact with Arsenal chiefs ‘late into the night’ to get an agreement over the line for the England Under-21 international.
