Manchester United made the signing of Carlos Baleba a pretty big deal by parading him onto the pitch before last month's Premier League victory over Ipswich. Man Utd made midfield recruitment a summer priority, so what happens now? On the early evidence, it will be either Kobbie Mainoo or Youri Tielemans, with either Tielemans or Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role.

Man City would ultimately land Anderson for £116million in the summer, with Man United going on to sign Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos in their midfield overhaul.

Wayne Rooney says Michael Carrick ‘has been left short’ after Manchester United’s summer transfer window (Stick to United) Wayne Rooney believes Michael Carrick has been ‘left short’ by Manchester United’s hierarchy after the summer transfer window. United focused on bolstering Carrick’s midfield options in the summer window as the club spent around £150 million on the signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. A move for Lewis Hall was also considered but United opted not to submit an offer to Newcastle United, who had no interest in selling the 22-year-old left-back. Rooney feels United needed to sign a left-back to provide support for Luke Shaw and also insists a new striker was required to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko, who is yet to start a Premier League game this season. Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United needed to sign a striker to ease the burden on Benjamin Sesko (PA Wire) ‘I thought Luke Shaw was really good [against Everton], possibly could have got closer for the first goal but I thought he played really well, and that connection with Rashford was good. ‘But I think with Dalot and Mazraoui coming on, for a team who want to compete and compete at the top end of the Premier League, great getting back in the Champions League but you want to get in the Champions League and try to compete as well. Are we going to win the Champions League? Probably not, you never know but probably not. ‘But you want a squad of players who are going to compete and I think Michael has been left short on that. ‘Luke is not going to play every game, Dalot and Mazraoui coming on at left-back, again, we’re seeing too many players player in unfamiliar positions to them. And I think that’s where the club should have went out and got players to help. ‘You would certainly be asking questions. I know Michael has come out and said he’s happy with the players they’ve got in. I don’t think any manager is happy, you always more more, more players and help for your team on the pitch. ‘The back line I don’t think is the strongest. Harry Maguire is probably the first-choice centre-back, then you’ve got Martinez who has got his injury problems, Heaven, who has got a lot of potential and I really like but it is potential and we’ve not seen enough of him. Full-back area is a big concern.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Benjamin Sesko is ‘not the answer’ for Manchester United, says Tim Sherwood (Picture: Sky Sports) Tim Sherwood says Benjamin Sesko isn’t yet the ‘answer’ for Manchester United up front and Michael Carrick has shown he is not ready to place his full trust in the striker this season. Sesko hit an impressive run of form towards the back-end of last season but has been limited to substitute appearances three matches into the new Premier League campaign. On Sunday, the 23-year-old attacker was sent on in the closing stages for the third match on the bounce, with the Red Devils seeking a winner after Tyrique George’s stunning equaliser for Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Sesko made his presence known from the off and was rewarded for his efforts as he restored the visitors’ advantage with a fine header past Jordan Pickford with only two minutes remaining of normal time. The goal sent United’s away support into raptures on Merseyside, with Carrick’s men seemingly on course for their second straight victory after their 5-2 defeat of Ipswich at Old Trafford. But the Toffees rallied again and levelled for a second time in the match through substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who fired a curling 30-yard effort into the corner of Senne Lammens’ goal to make it 2-2 at the death. Carrick may be tempted to throw Sesko in for his first start of the season on Wednesday night when United kick off their Champions League campaign at home to Azerbaijani minnows Sabah. Everyone is looking for it, Arsenal are looking for it,’ Sherwood said on Sky Sports News. ‘Sesko isn’t the answer because no one wants to play him. {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Carrick insists Man Utd's start to season is 'not that bad' after 2-2 draw to Everton","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/09\/07\/6380575265597538231\/480x270_MP4_6380575265597538231.mp4","description":"Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored an absolute worldie in the sixth minute of added time to seal a 2-2 draw for The Toffees.","duration":"T4M8S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/09\/07\/07\/111091361-0-image-a-43_1788761956815.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-09-07T07:17:25+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); ‘He comes on, he’s done alright, he’s come on and scored a few goals off the bench. ‘But if he was top drawer, do you think Michael Carrick would be playing him?
