On deadline day, Chelsea finally approved the £125 million sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City but aimed to bring in a midfield replacement before the end of the window. Xabi Alonso is an admirer of Martin Zubimendi but Chelsea’s approach for the Spanish midfielder was swiftly rejected by Arsenal. Chelsea then agreed a deal with Monaco worth €55 million (£47.1m) for Lamine Camara but the Ligue 1 side cancelled their agreement with an hour to go before the deadline. According to FootMercato, Chelsea have now contacted Wijnaldum after he left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq when his contract expired earlier this summer. The 35-year-old remains without a club but has recently held talks with Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake. Wijnaldum was a key part of Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League in five seasons at Anfield. The midfielder then joined Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent in 2021 before making the move to Saudi Arabia two years later. For Al-Ettifaq last season, Wijnaldum scored 17 goals and registered seven assists in 34 appearances. If he makes the move to Chelsea, Wijnaldum would link up with his former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who joined Stamford Bridge as a free agent in August. Chelsea were working on deals for a number of midfielders on deadline day as Enzo Fernandez closed in on a move to Manchester City. The Blues held talks with Roma for France World Cup star Manu Kone and thought they had agreed a deal with Monaco for Lamine Camara. Progress in the Camara pursuit led Chelsea to sanction Fernandez’s move to the Etihad Stadium for a staggering £125m – the joint-highest fee paid in Premier League history. But talks with Monaco then broke down meaning Camara stayed put and Alonso failed to sign a replacement for Fernandez. As well as looking at Camara and Kone, Chelsea were also linked with deadline-day moves for Alex Scott, Martin Zubimendi and Morgan Gibbs-White. Chelsea are targeting Martin Zubimendi as a replacement for Enzo Fernandez (Getty) Arsenal have rejected an approach from Chelsea for Martin Zubimendi, according to reports. Despite failing to meet Chelsea’s initial deadline of August 14, Manchester City have now agreed a £125 million deal to sign Enzo Fernandez on deadline day. Chelsea have been searching for a replacement for the Argentina international and Xabi Alonso is a keen admirer of Zubimendi after trying to sign him for Real Madrid last year. Zubimendi join Arsenal in a £60m deal from Real Sociedad last summer and made 57 appearances in his debut season with the Gunners as they won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final. According to The Sun, Chelsea’s approach has been ‘knocked back’ by Arsenal, who have told Zubimendi that he will play a ‘key role’ for Mikel Arteta’s side this season. The report adds that Chelsea have also made an approach for Alex Scott, although Bournemouth have made it clear that they have no interest in selling the 23-year-old.
