Obi, 18, was a highly-rated member of Arsenal’s youth academy and was regarded as one of the best young strikers at youth level in England, scoring 32 goals in 18 matches for the Gunners’ Under-18s, which included 10 in one game against Liverpool. He left north London in the summer of 2024, joining United where he was given opportunities in the first-team under Ruben Amorim. He made the first-team squad on just one occasion last season however with his football restricted to appearances for the Under-21s and the FA Youth Cup. Michael Carrick’s side fell to a dismal 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City in their season opener last Saturday. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both started in United’s new-look midfield with Baleba arriving at Old Trafford in a £65million deal from Brighton this week to complete the rebuild. The Cameroon international is expected to be unveiled ahead of kick-off but fans will have to wait to see him in action. An ankle injury picked up during Brighton’s pre-season campaign means he is not available today with Carrick confirming on Friday it could be another two or three weeks before he is fit to play. That timeline suggests he will be in contention to face Fulham in west London on 20 September. Amad Diallo is also ruled out as a result of an ankle injury he picked up last week before the Hull game. Watkins looks set to leave Aston Villa before the summer transfer window closes after missing the club’s opening Premier League game on Sunday. The 30-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for the dismal 4-0 defeat at Brighton, with the English striker now set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in a move worth £50million. United were linked with a move for Watkins earlier in the summer, but have prioritised signings in central midfield options over other areas of the squad. But former Red Devils winger Sharpe believes the club may have missed a trick by not making a move for Watkins, particularly after their 2-0 defeat at Hull City on opening day that exposed their lack of depth in the striker position. ‘I think he would be an ideal buy,’ Sharpe told Metro. ‘He holds the ball up well, he’s quick, he scores goals and I think he’s at the age where he would have come in and not been overawed by Manchester United and what would have been expected of him as a number nine. ‘I think he would have thrived and been be a great signing and Sesko would learn so much from him. And the manner of the defeat against their newly-promoted opposition has seen United’s summer business placed under a microscope with just a week to go until the end of the transfer window. The 18-year-old moved to Manchester United from Arsenal in 2024 and was seen as one of the brightest prospects in the top flight due to prolific goal-scoring in the youth ranks. The forward was handed his first team debut last year and made eight appearances for the Red Devils in the second half of the 2024/25 season. The Dane failed to score in any of those appearances and dropped out of first team contention last season, not making a single appearance. Obi does not appear to have worked his way back up the pecking order under Michael Carrick and has been made available for loan. Reports from the striker’s home country earlier this month suggested there was ‘massive interest’ in a short-term deal for the youngster. Dutch side Feyenoord have emerged as one of those interested parties, with De Telegraaf reporting that they hope to take the Dane on loan. Giovenni van Bronckhorst already has Ayase Ueda, Ignacio Ferri and Shaqueel van Persie as options up front. It seems unlikely that Manchester United would want to loan out a prospect to a club unlikely to provide him with regular first team minutes, but Feyenoord’s position could change before the transfer window closes. Ueda has been linked with an exit and if he does, then Obi could be brought in as an option with more chance of getting on the field.
