The Premier League champions got their title defence underway with a flawless performance against the newly-promoted Sky Blues at the Emirates. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka put Arsenal in control early on before Odegaard added a third shortly after the break. The Arsenal captain, who was named player of the match, has made a fast start to the season, having opened his goalscoring account in last weekend’s Community Shield. But Keown believes the Norwegian midfielder needs to maintain those levels, especially after an injury-hit campaign last season, in which he only started 16 league matches. ‘We need him back,’ Keown told Stan Sport at full-time. ‘He’s probably the one player who’s under more pressure than anybody else because he’s got Eze in the background and young Dowman is going to be an amazing talent. So good news that he doesn’t have any injury concerns anymore.’ And Keown was also keen to highlight the performance of new signing Christos Tzolis, who impressed in his first league start following his £34million move from Club Brugge earlier this summer. ‘I thought he was as good as a debutant, as I’ve seen since maybe Freddie Ljungberg back in the day,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to go overboard, but everything he did, the first goal he’s involved in, he shuts the ball down. Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday before kicking-off their Premier League title defence next Friday against Coventry City. It will be curious to see what line-up Mikel Arteta selects against the Citizens, with several key stars only returning to training in the last few days following their exploits at the World Cup. Dowman became the youngest player in Champions League history at just 15 years and 308 days old and later the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history and youngest Premier League champion. When you see him off the pitch he looks like a 16-year-old, but when you see him on the pitch he looks like a man that’s been there for a long time with a lot of talent. ‘I remember Bryan Robson telling me about Ryan Giggs when he was young and coming through. But there is speculation that the latter could be leaving the Emirates before deadline day, with reports claiming that Arsenal have offered Lewis-Skelly to Manchester United and Chelsea. Seaman cannot believe that is true however and in any case is certain that the midfielder would not want to leave, adding: ‘I don’t think he wants to go. Nobody wants to see him leave. ‘I’ve been coaching at Arsenal now for about four or five years with the under 18s and under 21s and I remember watching him coming through the ranks with Nwaneri and Max Dowman. ‘Watching these guys train and then in the restaurant afterwards, they got their school uniform on because they went back to school! It was just so strange! ‘So, they’ve been at the club for a long, long time and I still think Mikel’s got a lot of trust in him.
