The Red Devils were stunned by newly-promoted Hull City last weekend and were condemned to a shock 2-0 defeat that sparked fears last season’s late revival would represent another false dawn. United looked to be heading for another disaster when Leif Davis fired the visitors to Old Trafford into a shock lead, but Bruno Fernandes’ equaliser settled the nerves before a second half onslaught. With the contest all but settled midway through the second period, Carrick rang the changes, introducing the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Andrey Santos and Noussair Mazraoui. Handing game time to first team fringe players badly in need of minutes did come at a cost, however, with Carrick unable to blood one of the club’s most exciting youngsters in Shea Lacey. The teenager impressed in pre-season but Rooney is struggling to see where opportunities will present themselves if Carrick isn’t prepared to blood Lacey in matches where the result has already been determined. The Red Devils beat Ipswich Town 5-2 on Sunday to pick up their first win of the season after their shock 2-0 loss at Hull City on the opening weekend. The back four has come in for question over those two games, with Michael Carrick picking Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw on Sunday, with Noussair Mazroui and Ayden Heaven starting with Maguire and Shaw against Hull. Carrick also has the likes of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, when he is fit, available to him, but Neville believes he need to sign at least one more defender this week. Sign up now for free. ‘If Michael Carrick could get a defender or two in in the next 48 hours, I think it’s really important,’ the former full-back said on The Gary Neville Podcast. ‘Manchester United have rebuilt their attack last season, they’ve rebuilt the midfield this season and it feels like they’re going to wait to rebuild their defence for another 12 months. ‘I don’t know if there are one or two defenders available, but if there are, can you somehow try and advance that money into this window and then spend less next season? That’s not ideal at all. ‘One of them is makeshift full-back at best, there’s no lack of willingness for him to play there, but he’s not a full-back. If he can’t, then how does he structure the team? ‘Carrick may have a thought process of how he can solidify the defensive part without bringing another defender in and that’s something that could be possible, but bringing in at least one defender in, maybe two, would change the whole dynamic of how you think about Manchester United’s season. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United came from behind to win at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Bryan Mbeumo and a controversial Jacob Greaves own goal also helping Michael Carrick’s side. The scoreline was not a true reflection of Ipswich’s performance, with Gary O’Neil’s team demonstrating much energy and spirit throughout the match. Shaw’s performances this season have come under heavy scrutiny, especially with the Red Devils looking to sign a new left-back before transfer deadline day on Tuesday, And the England international took full responsibility for the opener, telling Sky Sports: ‘A really important win. We knew how important it was to win today. ‘I am a bit disappointed and angry with myself for the first goal. Extremely happy with the team in the second half, it was really good. The 31-year-old is the only natural left-back at Old Trafford and there is fear United will not sign another this summer. ‘I think we’ve done some fantastic business and we’ve done it very well with the money we’ve spent,’ Carrick told BBC Sport post-match. ‘We’re making the most of the situation that we have.
