A back injury which flared up at the World Cup is likely to rule the Frenchman out of action for several months with the Gunners opting to give the 25-year-old a complete break, rather than go down the route of surgery. Mosquera deputised ably for Saliba against the Sky Blues and has impressed overall since joining from Valencia in a £17million deal a year ago. Konsa is, however, eligible to make his debut against his old club this evening, but Arsenal legend David O’Leary believes Arteta would be best served by keeping an unchanged defensive line-up. Konsa has trained with the first-team this week and will be available to face his former employers. Mikel Arteta remains without half of his regular back four with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba still sidelined. Timber has not started a game since March due to a troublesome groin injury and while he is stepping up his return plans in training, he will not be available this weekend. Saliba is a long-term absentee as he recovers from his back injury. The Gunners confirmed the exciting news on Saturday as Salmon celebrated his 17th birthday, with the defender saying: ‘A lot of hard work that went into this, a lot of ups and downs, but I’m so proud. ‘I’m looking forward to attacking the season. I gave myself a good start, so let’s see what it holds.’ Salmon made four first-team appearances last season, including starting the FA Cup win over Mansfield, though he is yet to play in the Premier League. But the England youth international was not in the matchday squad for Arsenal’s opening two games and his chances of playing have taken a further blow following the arrival of Erzi Konsa in a £55million transfer from Aston Villa. Neither summer signing was involved in the season’s curtain-raiser as the Gunners beat Coventry City 3-0 last week. Clearly their absence didn’t hold the team back as they secured a comfortable win, but both could be in the squad when the champions travel to take on Aston Villa on Monday. He has been out on the pitch doing training sessions. ‘We have just been managing the load. He is potentially available.’ The midfielder did start in the Community Shield on August 16, playing the first half, but has been dealing with a minor thigh strain since. I don’t know but it’s not down to us.’ Jurrien Timber is another sidelined Gunners star, but he will not be back for their next game due to his groin problem. ‘Jurrien is progressing really well,’ said Arteta of the Dutchman. ‘It is the third week in a row that we have increased his load.
