The Gunners won all eight of their European league phase games last season and made an impressive start to this season’s campaign, beating Napoli 1-0 in Italy. Arsenal were the better side throughout but it looked as though their wastefulness in front of goal would cost them the three points until in-form Martin Odegaard popped up with a 75th-minute winner. Erling Haaland’s first-half header sealed the win at the Etihad Stadium but City needed an brilliant performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma to keep a clean sheet against Coventry. City made a strong end to the summer transfer window as they signed Ayyoub Bouaddi for £86 million last week before spending £65m on Iliman Ndiaye and £125m on Enzo Fernandez on deadline day. It was known from the start of the summer that Mikel Arteta was looking to improve his options on the left-flank but his side are now arguably even weaker in that position. Christos Tzolis was signed to replace Leandro Trossard but the Gunners failed to bring in another forward before deadline day and have since allowed Gabriel Martinelli to join Al-Hilal for £60million. That’s despite the Premier League champions pursuing deals for several huge stars over the summer, namely Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez. All three would have set Arsenal back nine-figures, with Rogers joining rivals Chelsea for £117m. But former Arsenal academy star and England international Jay Bothroyd believes a relatively cheaper option would have been the perfect signing – but the player has now joined the Citizens. He would hit the ground running and it would bring real balance to that Arsenal side.’ Tzolis, a £34m arrival from Club Brugge, recorded three assists in his first two Arsenal games but was hooked at half-time against Aston Villa last Monday following a very poor performance. Mikel Arteta has refreshed the left side of his attack this summer with Christos Tzolis arriving to replace the departing Leandro Trossard. Gabriel Martinelli, a loyal servant having joined the club as an 18-year-old seven years ago, is also poised to move on. The Gunners are in advanced talks with Saudi side Al-Hilal over a £60million deal with the Brazilian international thought to have given the green light to the move. Arteta regularly rotated between Trossard and Martinelli last season and while Tzolis has enjoyed a bright start to life at the club, the exits could leave the manager short of an alternative option. While Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze can also both offer cover, The Independent reports there is some ‘internal surprise’ at Arsenal that a direct replacement for Martinelli has not been secured yet. The Premier League champions have made three major signings so far this window, with Bruno Guimaraes arriving from Newcastle, Ezri Konsa coming in from Aston Villa and Christos Tzolis jetting in from Club Brugge. Piero Hincapie has also made his loan move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent, as expected, while Illan Meslier has come in on a free from Leeds United. There has also been the notable exit of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas and now Gabriel Martinelli is expected to complete a move to the Saudi Pro League. Left wing has been the focus of debate for Arsenal transfer business all summer, with links to huge names like Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez and Premier League options including Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye. Sagna thinks his former club should swerve making another signing in that position, though, feeling Tzolis, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke have it covered and any further arrivals would bloat the squad. ‘If Martinelli leaves I think Arsenal have Eze who has played on the left wing for Crystal Palace and did well there. Arsenal have a bunch of players that are able to deliver regardless of where they’re playing,’ Sagna told The Action Network. I think it’s going to be an interesting season going forward because Arsenal have options. ‘I think Tzolis is young enough to be able to play game after game. He’s young. At 24 he will be able to compete all season and he’s smart. He doesn’t always get in between the lines, he doesn’t get kicked a lot. He’s a smart player and I think he’s able to play the whole season the same way Saka did and still deliver.’ He added: ‘At the moment, I don’t think they need Iliman Ndiaye or Junior Kroupi.They have enough players. Martinelli is closing in on a move away from Arsenal after being told to find a new club by Gunners boss Arteta. Having made his first-team debut in 2019, Martinelli is Arsenal’s longest-serving player and has racked up just shy of 300 appearances for the club. Martinelli began to fade out of Arteta’s plans last season but still contributed to Arsenal’s first Premier League title since 2004 and the run to the Champions League final. The writing appeared to be on the wall for Martinelli when Arsenal completed a £34m deal for Christos Tzolis earlier in the summer. The audacious yet unsuccessful pursuit of Brazil icon Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid also suggested Arteta was planning to offload Martinelli. Arteta made his stance on Martinelli clear by leaving the 25-year-old out of Arsenal’s matchday squad for the Community Shield against Manchester City. Ian Wright criticised Arsenal’s treatment of Martinelli (Picture: Sky Sports) ‘In respects to Martinelli and the way Martinelli has been treated at the moment it really makes me feel uncomfortable,’ Wright told Sky Sports after Arsenal’s win over Coventry. ‘Because he always gives 100 per cent, I’m not saying he’s the greatest, he’s really come up with some big moments for Arsenal, some big games, he’s scored some very important goals… ‘The way he’s been treated at the end here, I know they might want him out, and there’s a lot of people saying, “yeah, maybe it’s time for him to move on”, but there’s ways of doing that and it should suit him as well, how he wants to leave. ‘Not being in the squad, not being spoken to, doesn’t know what’s going on, yes, I do know this, again, not being involved in the Community Shield squad, he doesn’t know what’s happening, I think he’s got a year left [on his contract]. ‘If you bring Vini [Vinicius Junior] in, that kind of level in, Martinelli can say to himself, “well, okay, they’ve brought him and Tzolis, I might be third [choice]”, but if you’re bringing Tzolis in, and he’s looking at Tzolis, you look at Madueke on the other [wing], you’re thinking to yourself, “I think I can still have it with these two, I still think I’ve got something to offer here”. ‘For him to be nowhere near it, it makes me feel sad for him. I’m just saying I think he’s done enough with this team, with this squad, to be treated with a little bit more respect than he’s being treated at the moment.’ Meanwhile, fellow Arsenal great Martin Keown has advised Arteta not to sell Martinelli as he closes in on a move to Saudi.
