United are sending their young star out on loan (Picture: UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) Manchester United and Dutch outfit Willem II have agreed terms on a season-long loan move for teenage striker Chido Obi. Obi, 18, was a highly-rated member of Arsenal’s youth academy and was regarded as one of the best young strikers at youth level in England, scoring 32 goals in 18 matches for the Gunners’ Under-18s, which included 10 in one game against Liverpool. He left north London in the summer of 2024, joining United where he was given opportunities in the first-team under Ruben Amorim. He made the first-team squad on just one occasion last season however with his football restricted to appearances for the Under-21s and the FA Youth Cup. Having outgrown academy football, United have sought a loan move the teenage striker. While the English transfer window has closed, Dutch clubs can keep doing business until tonight with Eredivisie side Willem II winning the race for his signature. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have been used through the middle by Michael Carrick with Joshua Zirkzee also still at the club after a deadline move to Everton didn’t go through. While Obi has a formidable record at youth level, the club have decided a loan to be the next best move for his development. Obi has not played a competitive game under Carrick (Picture: James Gill – Danehouse/Getty Images) Obi made eight appearances in total under Amorim during the 2024-25 season, going onto score his first senior goals in a post-season tour of Asia. Last season he scored 20 goals in 37 appearances across various youth competitions. He made the bench away to Wolves in December last season in what turned out to be Amorim’s penultimate game in charge but is still to feature under Carrick. Manchester United youngster Chido Obi has reportedly agreed a season-long loan move to Willem II, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 18-year-old striker has long been highly regarded in the game, having had an exceptionally prolific record during his time in Arsenal’s academy. Mikel Arteta is set to trim his Arsenal squad (Picture: Getty) Ray Parlour has advised Mikel Arteta to sell a second Arsenal player after sanctioning the exit of Gabriel Martinelli. Arsenal’s longest-serving player Martinelli is closing in on a £56m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after being put up for sale by Arteta. The Gunners signed Greek winger Christos Tzolis earlier in the summer and then tried to sign Brazil icon Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid. The writing was on the wall for Martinelli after he was left out of Arsenal’s matchday squads for the Community Shield against Manchester City and the Premier League opener against Coventry City. Martinelli was initially reluctant to join Al Hilal but ESPN say he has now approved the move after being offered a four-year contract worth around £20m-a-year. Asked about Martinelli’s future earlier this week, Arteta said: ‘Everybody knows and recognised how much we love Gabi and whatever the outcome is, it is because everyone agrees to that. ‘We have had conversations. I know what is in each other’s hearts, and the words that came through in that conversation make me happy. Gabriel Martinelli is set to leave Arsenal (Picture: Getty) ‘But it is inevitable you have to say certain things that are tough.’ Arsenal legend Parlour has backed the decision to sell Martinelli to ‘freshen up the left-hand side’ and says he would not be opposed to Gabriel Jesus also being moved on before the transfer deadline. Like Martinelli, Jesus also failed to feature in Arsenal’s first two games of the season and is training away from the first-team. ‘Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli are probably the two that will move on,’ Parlour told Ladbrokes. Arsenal are open to offers for Gabriel Jesus (Picture: Getty) ‘But the problem is that moves away have got to suit them as well; they can’t just suit the club, they’ve got to be right for the player too. ‘We definitely need to move a few on in the next few days, especially if one or two more are going to come in. And you look at the squad and think it’s probably Jesus and Martinelli who would be most likely to go. ‘Martinelli has done nothing wrong, but he’s been there a long time now, and maybe they’re just trying to freshen it up on that left-hand side.’ Jesus has attracted interest from English, European and Saudi clubs as his four-year spell at Arsenal appears to be coming to an end. {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa and Jurrien Timber injury updates from Mikel Arteta","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/08\/27\/7601825220292359409\/480x270_MP4_7601825220292359409.mp4","description":"Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaks ahead of his side's match against Aston Villa in the Premier League.","duration":"T13M56S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/08\/27\/15\/110887671-0-image-a-10_1787841983349.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-08-27T15:48:04+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); The Brazilian, who won four Premier League titles at Manchester City, has scored 32 goals in 123 appearances for the Gunners. Michael Carrick has not picked Chido Obi in a competitive fixture (Picture: Getty Images) Manchester United teenager Chido Obi has become a target for Feyenoord, who want to snap up the striker on a loan deal. The 18-year-old moved to Manchester United from Arsenal in 2024 and was seen as one of the brightest prospects in the top flight due to prolific goal-scoring in the youth ranks. The forward was handed his first team debut last year and made eight appearances for the Red Devils in the second half of the 2024/25 season. The Dane failed to score in any of those appearances and dropped out of first team contention last season, not making a single appearance. Obi does not appear to have worked his way back up the pecking order under Michael Carrick and has been made available for loan. Reports from the striker’s home country earlier this month suggested there was ‘massive interest’ in a short-term deal for the youngster. Dutch side Feyenoord have emerged as one of those interested parties, with De Telegraaf reporting that they hope to take the Dane on loan. Chido Obi did feature in pre-season this year with the Manchester United first team (Picture: Getty Images) The report from the Dutch publication suggests that Obi could struggle to make an impression on the first team at Feyenoord given the competition he would face. Giovenni van Bronckhorst already has Ayase Ueda, Ignacio Ferri and Shaqueel van Persie as options up front. It seems unlikely that Manchester United would want to loan out a prospect to a club unlikely to provide him with regular first team minutes, but Feyenoord’s position could change before the transfer window closes. Ueda has been linked with an exit and if he does, then Obi could be brought in as an option with more chance of getting on the field. Feyenoord do offer Champions League football, having already booked their spot in the league phase of the competition. Obi made seven Premier League appearances in 2025 (Picture: Getty Images) The Daily Mail report that FC Koln have also shown an interest in the 18-year-old this summer. Manchester United will be hoping their first team strikers are more potent at the weekend after drawing a blank in the 2-0 defeat to Hull City on Saturday. Matheus Cunha played up top, with Benjamin Sesko coming off the bench as he continues his return to full fitness. The Red Devils host Ipswich Town on Sunday and Sesko may be back in the starting XI against the Tractor Boys. Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
