Mikel Arteta would not be drawn on Arsenal's hunt for a new forward after the Gunners were unable to bring in another attacker by Tuesday's transfer deadline. Arsenal signed Christos Tzolis but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Jr, ending the window with fewer attackers in their squad than they started with after sanctioning the departures of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

It was known from the start of the summer that Mikel Arteta was looking to improve his options on the left-flank but his side are now arguably even weaker in that position. Christos Tzolis was signed to replace Leandro Trossard but the Gunners failed to bring in another forward before deadline day and have since allowed Gabriel Martinelli to join Al-Hilal for £60million. That’s despite the Premier League champions pursuing deals for several huge stars over the summer, namely Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez. All three would have set Arsenal back nine-figures, with Rogers joining rivals Chelsea for £117m. But former Arsenal academy star and England international Jay Bothroyd believes a relatively cheaper option would have been the perfect signing – but the player has now joined the Citizens. Having won their first Premier League title in 22 years, the Gunners did not rest on their laurels over the summer transfer window, spending almost £200million on five new signings. Piero Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent, with Ezri Konsa arriving from Aston Villa to add more depth across the defensive line. Illan Meslier arrived as a third-choice goalkeeper from Leeds United, while Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis were also signed from Newcastle United and Club Brugge, respectively. Arsenal had been keen to strengthen further on the left wing, but fell short in their pursuit of Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior. And with that in mind, Smith believes the club should not have been so hasty to let go of Leandro Trossard, who joined Besiktas for a measly £17m fee earlier in the summer. ‘Time will tell, but Trossard, on paper, is more of a loss,’ Smith told Metro via BestBettingSites.co.uk. As for a title challenge, I do see them just being off it at the moment. ‘I might be proved wrong. Who can say what’s going to happen with injuries over the course of the season? ‘If they keep Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro together, it gives them a great chance. Nwaneri returned from a somewhat frustrating loan spell with Marseille at the start of the summer and the 19-year-old’s future remained uncertain right up until the end of the transfer window. But Dortmund intensified their interest in Nwaneri after new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered a devastating knee injury in the side’s DFB-Pokal victory over Hamburg on Tuesday night. Nwaneri was given assurances that he would receive significant playing time in Niko Kovac’s starting XI and talks moved in a positive direction between the youngster’s camp and the Bundesliga outfit over the following hours. It’s claimed Arteta ‘deliberated for a long time about whether’ he would regret losing Nwaneri, especially with the Premier League champions failing to bring in a left winger to fill the void left by Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli on deadline day. The report adds that the move ‘hung in the balance’ before BVB eventually got their man, with the club’s sporting director Nils-Ole Book maintaining close contact with Arsenal chiefs ‘late into the night’ to get an agreement over the line for the England Under-21 international. Barcola, a double Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain, completed his £123million move to Anfield in the final days of the summer window, signing a five-year contract. Arsenal explored a move for the France international earlier in the window but instead focused on other targets with Liverpool given a relatively free run at signing the 24-year-old winger. The Gunners have looked at bringing in an established left winger for the last two summers, exploring moves for the likes or Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon last year with Vinicius Jr emerging as a top target this year. However, The Athletic reports that Arsenal were only willing to pursue a loan deal to avoid the possibility of breaching UEFA’s spending limits.
